So yeah no offense to any of the lists, I'm just curious why some people are putting teams that haven't been as active or placed recently over the top college teams like UNC and Cal in their lists. Especially UNC since they placed above several of those teams at Elite.
Is it because they're prioritizing general reputation over recent placings? I'm not advocating for anyone but I'm relatively new to the circuit and wanted to know what people think characterizes/defines a top 10 team.
hey welcome to btf,

il try to explain why some of these lists (including mine) have other teams that have placed under teams such as UNC/CAL. For example, i have Shan e punjab on my list even though they have not performed in a year. Well thats because IMO their past performance still holds up today. Placings are based on the judges who judged that comp, so if people have other teams on their list its because thats what they like. The circuit has not come up with a clear cut way to deliberate points (basketball 3 pointers are 3 pointers) Another example is NYPD, they didnt win elite but i still liked their performance better than UNC/CAL performances. Each person has their own opinion, simple as that. It has nothing to do with reputations, it has to do with what each person likes to see in a set/performance.

top ten teams dont mean bullshit. teams come and they go, from the best to the worst. The circuit isnt consistent enough for a list like this to ever be plausible. To those who step out on top much respect, for those who dont.......shit happens. untill next time

tl;dr
Some people rank teams based on placings, some people rank teams based on great performances and sometimes the two don't always intersect.

Thanks for the appreciation in your list Faizan. It's crazy that people are even considering us when they are thinking of their personal 'top tens.' We've definitely come a long way from two years ago, where we would be struggling even at minor competitions like Rangoli in Georgia and Aag Ki Raat in South Carolina. One of our captains, Mr. Raj Shah, definitely changed the face of our team (also helps that he's pretty damn good at mixing). It's a boon to have the mix you're dancing with instantaneously almost so we didn't need to wait and be on an expensive DJ's often busy schedule. We've also gotten pretty awesome luck with show order in our run this year, which apparently is an issue in the circuit, but treated us rather kindly.

It's exciting to see the level of interest that's being garnered in our state, whether it's from collegiate teams or the independent ones. Though we're graduating a bunch of seniors, our future looks pretty good. Our second team last night won overall at a primarily fusion competition at USC. They're hungry and I can't wait to see what they continue to bring to the table. Let's hope they stay in people's top ten lists! They're going to bring a completely different vibe to our team, so don't worry about the rehashing of routines across years that has been the norm for teams that become complacent with placings. We're hungry, haha.

Big props to Cal for the love and absolutely can't wait to see you guys in less than a week!

Staying on topic, not including us, I would say my top ten is (in no particular order)

SGPD
NYPD
Jawani Warriors
JJ
Cal
BCC
PCBCA
ABC
FAUJ
AEG

Stop starting shit over people saying positive and nice remarks to other teams. You know the intention and the action were both positive and he stated a fair point in his eyes, regardless of whether it used a hint of sarcasm. If he said "How the hell did ____ make your list?" then yeah, that's rude, but jesus, there are enough competitive attitudes. Let someone give a team a compliment without them having to be "on their dick." Even if he was the most obnoxious UNC groupie in the world, there's nothing wrong with his post.

Mine's the same as right above this post, switching out UNC for BCC I think if we're talking about right now.

No offense bro, but what was the point of this post? If you don't agree with the discussion that the thread was started for, why even post? Some of us might enjoy in reminiscing on the performances we have watched and construct a hierarchy to what teams we think stand out the most in our eyes. It's not like they are going to tattoo these lists on the first born children of every potential bhangra-dancing child. It's all fun.

Anyways, time for my 2 cents, in no particular order

UNC
JJ
AEG
NYPD
NJ
SGPD
TAG
SMD
Cal
PCBCA

Yeah, no ABC, BCC or BK. Honestly, they're in the same league as the teams mentioned above in terms of cleanliness and quality, so it comes down to personal preference to a large extent. I figured that TAG and SMD need some attention here, because they're both sick teams with a ton of energy (not to mention incredible cleanliness and execution). FAUJ is right up there too, but I haven't watched enough of their videos to fairly judge them. I wish this was a top 15 or something, so I could actually fit in all of the teams.

Everyone has their own top 10. Defend yours if you want, but everyone has their own tastes and preferences. (These "Y U NO INCLUDE ___?" posts are sad) And even if you want to justify a team being in your top 10 WITH recent placings, just remember that judging isn't a completely objective process and prone to disagreement.

Hell, a common misconception these days is the one where people think a team placing over another team makes them better. If you want to even make such an assessment, base it on the actual performance and not by the judging. Judging serves one purpose - allocate prize money to competing teams according to competition rubric and personal tastes.

With my own preferences and personal views on bhangra (and excluding my own 2),

1. NJW: The cleaner version of NJ. Not as creative as the seniors, but these dancers dance as a team and even with mistakes, their execution as a unit is crisp. Plus, it helps that they're all the same height and look the same.
2. NJ: Was beginning to doubt after Elite 8, but NJ pulled through at Idols. Their formations and creativity have always set them apart. Their execution is getting sloppier with too many individual swag moments and inconsistency in styles between the NJ seniors and NJW fill-ins.
3. SGPD: Very close to NJ, but SGPD gets sloppy on execution and as a former hip-hop dancer, their creativity got stale for me fast. None the less, still one of the best in terms of consistency.
4. PCBCA: Even with derivative sets in the past with a lot of copied ideas from other teams, the execution at Elite 8 2011 pushed them up in my books. If you haven't danced on a competitive decently successful all-guy team, then it'll be harder for you to understand how difficult it is to get dancers with talent to hold themselves back for the sake of cleanliness. It's extremely difficult for anyone to not dance the best they can and not draw attention to themselves for the sake of cleanliness and PCBCA is one of the few all-guy teams out there that pulled it off.
5. NYPD: I would still give Elite 8 to JJ, but NYPD has lived in the shadow of SGPD/NJ for too long. Even without a 1st place trophy in over 2 years, they've been consistent with placings and brought fresh ideas and a new swag to the circuit, even when half the circuit is still on the TDot high.
6. JJ: They may not compete as often, but their performances attest to their placement in my top 10. Their creativity is subtle and formation-centric and their roster has some of the best that the US East has to offer.
7. ABC: ABC has come a long way in the last few years. I wasn't the biggest fan of their old style, but they've done some big things in the circuit. With top mixes, amazing vardiyan and consistent placings, there's no reason for them not to be in my top 10.
8. BCC: Consistent sets with great choreography and distinct style. I wish I could say more, but they've done nothing but exceed expectations every single time.
9. SMD: Before Elite 8, I would have given this to TAG, but TAG still needs a break out performance in my opinion. To me, they're an extension of SGPD and with some shared gimmicks and the rainbow vardiyan, it's hard to really get a feel for them as their own team. I don't think anyone thought SMD would be back after Bruin and BAB, but they brought a strong 16 woman roster with a performance that I think is one of the best all-girl performances of all time.
10. UNC: It's always difficult to think a team is amazing, but then disagree with winning a competition. Teams set themselves apart these days with execution and UNC, as the new kid on the block, is showing the rest of the circuit how it's done. I think they would have ranked much higher in my books if they changed up their set more since Burgh.

I agree with harman to an extent. he is trying to say is that no one is number 1 for long. Kind of like how i think that shan e from toronto is still top 10 music teams around, because hey that big apple set/performance to me is still better than what some teams are putting out today, same with warriors. NJW have competed 2 times in the past 2 years? masti 10 and tdot? both performances/sets were soooo amazing, they would IMO easily be better than what teams are putting out today. If team B performs 7 times in 1 season and gets all 7 first places, but the performance is not as good as the 2 NJW performances than why would team B be better than NJW or shaan e? its all opinionated. I dont agree with him saying you cant make lists, you can, its just pointless to some people because the list will never stay the same for long. AND he posted because it adds to the discussion! just like you did when you chose not to agree with him! its BTF!

Definitely agree with you on that one. My personal favorite actually is SGPD at Idols 09. Then again, I'm a tech buff, so I don't know how much it has to do with the fact that it was like the first mainstream HD video on the circuit that I saw :p.

I was primarily refuting the point that there was no point in making lists. But you're right, the post did achieve its purpose of promoting discussion, seeing as we're talking about it now haha.

People need to chill and stop being so fucking dramatic. Anyone's top 10 list is subjective and based on opinion, and from the looks of this thread is more like a "My top 10 favorite teams."

At the end of the day, I could give two shits about who's on top and who's not. You work hard, and worry about your own team. Then you give respect to other teams for doing the same. Simple.

+1. It's unfortunate that if you were to rank all of the teams based on their sportsmanship and courteousness, a few of the aforementioned teams in this thread would not make the top 10 list. Sucks to see people in the circuit getting so caught up that they forget about that.

I mean, how can we all judge an art form without it being subjective?

I can easily turn around and say "well, Team A won these comps and blah blah blah"... but then I need to remember that judging is subjective too. Judges can be as objective as possible, based on the rubric of the competition. But at the end of the day, the "placings" reflect the judge's opinions on the top team(s)-opinions being the word in play here, leading back to the idea of subjectivity.

I think each person reading this can, and has every right to, compile a list on who he/she thinks is the circuit's top 10 non-live teams and try to be as objective as possible... but the term "think" still implies subjectivity.

Placings and "top 10" lists arent objective, and neither is life. C'est la vie.
