Re: Toronto Allstars Girls Bhangra @ Bulldog Bhangra 2011 (GTVHD)

THANK YOU HARJOT and CONGRATS to TAG Girls!!!

This video shows us just how stacked this team is - from the front to back of formations we can see solid dancing, Very little slacking or deviations in style which is sick! I fear the day these guys and sgpd collaborate :D

The creative moves (mostly in the non-standard footwork) are growing on me now, though when I saw this live I thought there were TOO many moments of crazy footwork (criss-crossing the legs or back-kicking or karate-type moves, i originally felt there were too many non-bhangra steps like this which kind of diluted the effect of all of them).

though all jodis are too good here - that green girl (jindy?) does like, unreal jhummar at 6:58. The "McDonalds move," as I will refer to it, was done with perfect grace! If you watch, you see that not all the dancers turn their head to the side AND downward like she does during this move and that she lowers her body as she shrugs (she like, crouches down on the second step whereas the others stay high up) all while keeping very controlled shoulders. this is how the whole team could do it!!

Similarly, See the small sway that the blue girl on the right does right before leaning into punjab at 8:29 (would b sick if everyone did that! go sonya haha) Blue jodi you guys are nyaaaaassttyyy andddd Ricky's cousin: Ricky probably wishes he could dance like you ;)

this performance was amazing, but i felt that at parts the choreography was both designed and executed too manly.

song requests:

second saap song, right after mundran
song that starts at 8:25

I for one actually like this set....Props for doing what you do best and that is dancing.

because alot of teams are focused on doing crazy gimmics every 30 seconds the dance element for teams are starting to suffer. I actually appricate the dance part, all the moves are creative and unique. you girls didn't dummy down your chero for the sake of doing a gimmic.

respect.

I am not a fan of your vardii. Your chaadre are already mindfuck (aka rainbow colors in boxes) - why would you get different chaadre designs for each jodi? They do very little to add uniform but they also do very little to differentiate jodis. Getting the same chaadre for everyone would have allowed for a bit more uniformity. Plus, the concept works for SGPD because they have paghs and the color of the jodi is evident, which is not the case for chunnis. It's not easy to differentiate jodis, which hurts your formation. You need to find a balance between having vardiya that add to uniformity but allow for jodis to be seen as well, because the latter helps see formations better, especially if you have a lot of movement. Most of the time, it looks like random people moving, when in reality there are effects. Also, black as a jodi was a poor choice - the black jodi look like they have really wild hair. Little things like this could have easily been fixed, but they take away (unconsciously for most people) in a major way.

While you girls are clean, you girls still aren't crispy. People are doing different angles, extending less/more or doing moves differently at different times. The choreo is a good start too, but a lot of the nuances aren't showcased properly or too subtle to be noticed the first time around. Some of the formations are not being hit - if there are a clump like formation, you need to absolutely make sure that you're in the right place (spaces differed here and there between gaps, from side to side) or it looks like a clump. Honestly, you had a lot of cool ideas, but the bigger picture just wasn't being sold as well as it should have. In the end, dancing is important, but this is a performance.

As I said before, I like previous TAG sets better. And after watching GTV versions, I was still more entertained by ABC @ Idols last year, so if ABC improved from last year, I don't see how they wouldn't have won.

Yeah, it is very difficult to tell joriyan apart, but that was unintentional. The chunniyan and vests should be distinctively green, yellow, etc. but the tailor messed up. He went a little crazy and they turned out looking like they do... multi-color tye-dye. Unfortunately time+money contraints did not allow the team to get new stuff made

(Pink) Manveer & Prabhleen
(Blue) Sonia Dhuga & Sonia Dey
(Green) Jindy & Nisha
(Yellow) Neeru & Simran
(Orange) Swati & Navneet
(Black) Sunnena & Babneet

ayiyiyiyiyiyi gtv while so clear makes every flaw show. nonetheless, still sick. i enjoyed it more here (some segments of your guys sets literally leave me a dizzy from all the movement) as the clarity made it much easier to stomach all the movement.

Pink and Green stand out very clearly as the strongest dancers on this team. This is my favorite set from you all so far and while the crazy formations are still there, i saw what i'd like to think was some effort to exhibit your ability to dance. and it shows and made you all stronger.

oh and what abhi said. +100 for being one of the stronger teams ont he circuit that still actually remembers that the focus is BHANGRA.

The only issue I had watching this live was that it felt like each song/segment was separated by a 2 beat pause or transition, and it usually involved walking or doing something really girly to emphasize that you can go hard in the segment, ya know?

The cutesy walks or steps or w/e are fine once, twice, but more than that it starts to seem either lazy or overly emphatic of your gender (which I understood to be opposite of your MO). Slap your thighs and show off those biceps, you outdance most teams on the circuit, don't need to prove you can be girly too.

This doesn't apply to a segment like the Soul Bossa Nova where you were cute and girly with the fans and then killed it as the song went hard. That was unique and interesting. I mean the parts where you literally walk (or stand) for 2-4 beats in between songs. They make for weird transitions imo.

Just something to think about, it's minor, but it's directly related to perception which is important for a judge/audience.

Tons of swag. Especially during the soul bossa nova section. I do agree that the vardi are crazy confusing though. I guess once the tailor sorts it all out, we'll see how things go, but it did hamper the formations a bit. Tons of swag, though. Gotta love that attitude.
