hey so just wondering....when teams put their mixes together do u just randomly choose songs u like r do u have a common theme among the songs or wat??? b/c at times like ive seen teams start of w/a theme in all their songs...then they fade away-personally i think that it kinda makes the team look incomplete or like they left a thought unfinished

-so do teams put a general theme to songs?
-also how old school wud u go on songs? like to wat point is it that hey i luv this song and i luv the fact that its old-but u kno how some old songs r like yaa theyre old but they just dont seem to fit in-i dont exactly kno where im goin w/this.....but overall how far old school do u think teams shud go and how far have they gone?

Personally, for me, its random.

I'll be at a party, or walking to class, listening to random new songs and BOOM, an idea for formation or a step comes to me. For me, it seems like if I can really work the song, I'll use the song. I can agree that this may not be the best approach, but it has worked for me.

Initially, I wanted all warrior/war songs like Soorma for a Spartan Theme, but I realized that would be too tedious. lol

I'm not sure if you mean common theme as in the lyrics, or the style/tempo of the songs..but i think you need to set up your mix before you ever lay a track down. I'm learning this from Mac our mixer on Sher. id always come to him with sample ideas but he'd always reiterate that theres a theme you need to follow, and sometimes my ideas would fall outside of that range. view it in terms of buildups for the audience- if the audience were to listen to your mix (and assuming your choreo is solid), at what points would they be saying "oh $*#@ this is crazy and its getting crazier! whats next??" Thats where old school songs help too i think. You can never go back far enough, but keep in mind that throwing in an old school track can derail your mix because it just sticks out. If you're using stuff like Boli Pani, Hawaawan, Rambo, Chak Dun Ge, and then all of a sudden you throw in Kaali Teri Gut, what have you really accomplished? The rule I've had is to see how long the song has been out of rotation for. Hawaawan is still fresh, but Ah Ni Kuriye has been out of the loop for a while. Would the audience go nuts when they hear it or would they yawn? Thats where you run it by your team.

You also have to consider choreo when making a mix.
You don't want two slow segments back to back...that would bore half the crowd
It's nice to have tempo changes from slow to fast.
For example, most teams usually put a fast song right after jhummar
Just something to think about

thanks a bunch for the input...i got the whole switch up the tempo and stuff and ya ur mix has got to be like a rollar coaster basically..got that part down...just wonderin who makes ppls mixes is it the people who choreo? like do u make the mix while u choreo or do u just have abunch of random songs edited up at 1st that u wannnt to dance to and then throw somethin together??? b/c i hate choreoing and then all of a sudden im ike ok i got the dance down now i gotta put the mix together and the mix isnt like damnnnn that was good well to me it isnt...so how do ppl work that out ...basically how do u make it the mix thats in ur head and u think u cud get made?

ok, parul,

1) nobody can understand the way you write

2) i think we needa actually try sitting down and planning out the next routine rather than doing individ songs first

3) i love you

4) you're a sweeeeetttt choreographer

with our team we like to use alot of songs that usually most teams wouldnt use, and we try to stay away from songs that most of the teams would use at the same competition. sometimes were lucky enough to get unreleased music, so when we do, we try our best to incorporate it into the routine

I agree with Jasdeep, same thing with us we try to use songs which have not been used before (sher punjabi, dhamaal, chak downgaye, nishani, chande, tera naa lagna etc we used these first, I think. But at the same time you want crowd pleasers too, sometihng that they love, thats where old time favourites comes in also have some sort of an idea about where you wanna take the routine (speed, grace, opening, ending) those will help too. :)

you absolutely need to choreo and make your mix together, i go through like 10 cycles of choreo to mix to choreo to mix etc before arriving at final choreography and a final mix...and def try to use unique songs, with using really popular songs that have had killer routines to them (like lbc and sardar), you automatically get compared to that and will most likely your routine will be looked upon unfavorably to that, so its best to go in and own a song
