US and Poland agree shield deal

The US and Poland have agreed a preliminary deal on plans for the controversial US defence shield, Warsaw has announced.

The plan would see the US base 10 missile interceptors in Poland in exchange for help strengthening Polish defences, said PM Donald Tusk.

The scheme is highly controversial and has been opposed by Russia.

Poland is reported to have demanded security help after Moscow threatened to target its missiles at the bases.

The Polish Foreign Ministry told the PAP news agency that the deal would be signed at 1800 GMT.

The US signed a deal with the Czech Republic in July to base tracking radars there as part of the missile defence system.

Washington says it needs the system to protect itself and Europe from missile attack by what it calls rogue states, such as Iran. The US wants the sites to be in operation by about 2012.

Russia has expressed concern about the system in the past, with one official saying the deal "complicates" global security.

This has been in the works for quite some time, but I think as Russia gets more aggressive...everyones trying to move as quickly as possible because of the lack of trust we still have for Russia. It definitely seems to complicate global security, but that isn't even the biggest issue here...we should be concentrating on eliminating the two actual war fronts that still exist before we begin to think of prevention in other parts of the world. There is no question that Iran poses a threat, but I don't think it poses an immediate threat...and we should not be stretching ourselves so thin. It seems foolish especially with the changing of power in this country occurring so soon. Don't expect the military to actually move on this supposed deal for quite some time...if it happens at all..we are stretched way too thin to begin with...If Obama is elected, I am confident he will attempt to improve our relations to Iran...hopefully breaking some ground in nuclear concern....and reducing the immediate need for this missile defense system and the reinforcement of Poland's defenses...

A cold war doesn't seem likely in this day and age, but we really need to do something as quick as possible with our foreign policy before tension increases further.

Iran's military is the joke of the entire world, they have better photoshop skills than actual military might. They bought some North Korean missiles (which in turn were Russian SS-1s aka 'scuds'), painted them a nice Islamic green, and fire off a couple medium range missiles every once in a while. They have barely enough range to threaten their neighbors, I'm not sure how a missile shield in Poland is supposed to protect America from missiles that would need 5 times the range to reach us.

the shield is obviously directed at other countries, which is why russia is uneasy with american missile bases sitting on its border.

Iran is not a threat to the United States, but it is a threat to Israel, which indirectly is a threat to the United States... We all know why the U.S. wants to setup the missle shield in Poland, it's basically to piss the Russians off... Bush says him and Putin are good friends, my ass, those bastards hate each other, its all B.S. Russia is a threat to everyone in the region, this is a way for the United States to get their foot in the door and tell the Russians to back the fuck up a little bit...
