Lets be honest guys,

Bhangra is no longer fun anymore, and ill tell you guys why. If a team that's a favorite, lets say for example at VIBC, Panj. If they dont place, everyone on BTF starts going, "omg" "wtf" "RIGGED". A lot of the time, something like "synchrony" may cost a team 6-7 points. Or some teams might lose points on "stamina". And you CANT see that in a VIDEO. I'll tell you guys one thing, ive been doing bhangra for 13 years, and i'm not great anymore, BUT in the videos, its REALLLY hard to differentiate between my good performances and the bad on vidoes.

Remember guys, EVERYONE SWEATS and works hard, not just the teams that everyone loves and favours. Just because a team didn't place and its questionable, doesn't mean their sweat was worth more than anyone else s.

You bring up valid points bhangra is truley starting to lack that ethusiasm there was before. However, I disagree when you say videos cant tell everything. For example when you have HD quality videos like GTV, it does give you the benefit of having reply, to be able to go back and look at a certain part of the preformance where energy in one jodi might have been lacking or the nakhra of one dancer clashed with the others. In person you don't always have that, so i guess in a way its a disadvantage to the judges but if anything we should a better grasp on who deserved what then we would in person. I do agree that being there live gives a better feel of the energy and preformance level, but even the videos can give you an idea of that.

Personally, other then some toronto teams i do not know many of the dancers personally on various teams, so I do not really have that issue of my friend being on the team and them not winning.

I think another thing you pointed out about every team workign just as hard and the sweat being equal isnt exactly true. I dont believe thats always the case there have been plently of compeitions that the "favorite" didnt why and it was evident to why they didnt win, and thats because they werent "clean" or "synchronized". Satisfying those two things takes time, effort and ALOT of practice. You can usually tell what team put in the time and sweat to be the best they could and what team didnt. That being said everytime did put in time and every team does deserve acknowledgement for there efforts, at the end of the day it is bhangra that brings us all togather so why not embrace it no matter the standings.

I think the issue here is when we see a preformance that quickly becomes one of our favorites and then we find out that they placed last. Is it fair to that team that came out with all the stops brought the crowd on its feet to not place? Again all teams share the love for bhangra but let those teams that truly work hard to be the best get acknowledgement for it. Thats all.

Panj is in my top 5, but I wouldn't say the competition is rigged. If you asked me before VIBC where Panj would place, I would have placed them at the bottom of the group. That is because I understand the complexities of placings. It is more than a strong set that makes you win, and it seems that many on this thread still just don't get it. VIBC was not rigged, get over it and stop trying to ruin the reputation of a competition with a strong pedigree.

Consensuses mean nothing. What everyone in the crowd was expecting means nothing. Who danced for which team means nothing.

All that matters is what is written down on those clip boards by the judges. Don't use anything else in support of an argument for a change of placings, because it is likely irrelevant.

Further, the irresponsible allegations of "rigging" needs to stop, it is so unnecessary, especially when no one on this thread has proffered any evidence outside of hearsay.

Why don't you assemble a team and start up a competition yourself?

I mean.. think about it, it's obvious you do it for the love of bhangra and not the love of money. Your trusted and supported everywhere, I would think it'd be easy for you to find sponsors. EVERYONE would reach out to the competition because believe it or not your a big player in the industry.. but for the right reasons which is a rare and good thing because most people do it only to make huge profits. On top of all that, we're all gauranteed damn good HD recording including cool behind the scenes/backstage footage which you are a pioneer of in the bhangra competition world (as far as I know).

It's just a matter of financing a project of this scale, if you can't then its all good because I dont know your situation and I'm just shooting out ideas but if you can, I'd say take the challenge and go for it.. I'd buy a ticket or atleast get our team to compete. As for it being a lot of work, you have many teams that support you which I'm sure are willing to lend a hand any way they can.

Keep in mind this is just an idea, I'm sure its a lot harder than it looks but if anyone has a chance out of all of us, it'd be you.

Believe it or not bro, I've been working on something like this with Apna Virsa for quite a while... For those who don't know, Apna Virsa Bhangra Group's members are actually the Gabroo Punjabis. We've all gotten back together and are under the new name "Apna Virsa" to promote and give back to our community. We've held free classes for the past 2 years every Sunday, locally in Fairfield CA. We teach little kids Bhangra, and as a side note to our success so far, we've also thought Jhoomar to the fathers of the kids, and Giddha to the mothers. Our goal's and hopes were always to eventually build up and throw our own competition, and we had a high hopes to do it this year but the chances for that appear to be slim at this moment.

We did, however, throw a show last year called "Apna Virsa Bhangra Night". This show gave the young kids whom we thought Bhangra a chance to perform on stage in front of our community. We also brought class acts from outside, including Lal Singh Bhatti's Lok Saaz/Folk Boliyan, and a Malwai Giddha team from Fresno. With this show, we also learned how hard it is to throw large scale events. It's not impossible, but it's harder with today's economy. It's harder to obtain sponsors, and harder to convince the community to spend money on entertainment when many are already financially not as flexible.

However, my goal, and Apna Virsa's goal is still to promote Folk Bhangra. Hopefully a competition will come next year. We can all hope! I do thank you for your support though! We must all work together to keep this culture alive, more today than previously as I feel we have a "plague" infecting our Bhangra community and it's success in the future. If I can help anyone in the future, don't hesitate to ask!

Thats awesome to hear, I'l be honest I never knew about Apna Virsa and the show you guys have done (don't be offended, I barely know the ins and outs of the bhangra scene) but I do, like you, feel the presence of this bhangra "plague" and something really needs to be done about this or the future of folk bhangra is in jeopordy. And i'm not pointing fingers or anything like that so if anybody from VIBC reads this, its not towards you since I wasn't at the show and I haven't seen a single performance so who am I to judge.

As for your future success in hosting a competition, if theres one thing I've learned in my life its the more you dream the further you get, the more you put in the more you get back out.. your team teaches free lessons to kids and adults and teaches bhangra for what it truly is and seeing that you have already had a successful show meaning you have a TON of experience over most people, it shouldn't be too long til we hear about a competition from you guys, I hope. Also, another reason why bhangra isn't the same anymore beucase, I think alot of academys these days only care about teaching students for money. They really don't care about students continuing their culture etc. I'm not penalizing all academies but some. So, yea, bhangra isn't the same for many reasons.

Also 90% of the time, its not the judges, its the CRITERIA! And lets be honest guys, traditionalism is most of the time worth much less than "entertainment" or "synchronization". Bhangra's getting worst because of competitions inability to try to reach out the the bhangra community to ask them what we believe is a proper criteria. Or asking QUALIFIED people what a criteria looks like.

If you go tell VIBC that traditionalism and completion of moves is more important than anything, they will TOTALLY disregard you.

Bhangra needs a GOVERNING BODY. Set rules that COMPETITIONS must follow. That's the only way we will ever see bhangra get better. There are easily over a hundred teams in North America, yet it takes organizations like NHL, NFL, MLB only 32 teams to make an AWESOME organization.
