So I'm going to break down the weekend to its major components.
1. The Mixer
- Steel City Bhangra got to the mixer at 7:00 PM when it was supposed to start... It was us, the team, and the committee for about 2 hours until teams started to show up around 9. I don't blame the committee in anyway for the other teams tardiness, but it was kind of a crappy situation cause SCB had been up since 3 AM EST to catch our flight to Sacramento and had been on the go the second we landed. However, we had a lot of fun doing some team bonding stuff and just talking to committee members while we waited for the teams to show up so we could start. One thing that was nice about being the first team there was that we were the first to eat, and the food was SOOOO GOOD! There was butter chicken and a paneer dish with naan and chawal and it was sooo good! So we had plenty of that. Once the teams got there, we played a game where a few members of each team were put together with other teams to choreo a short segment, which was fun. Then to pick the line-up, we played a game in which one member from each team lined up and they had to transfer as many cotton balls from one table to the other using just vaseline and their nose (hands could only be used to apply vaseline to the nose). It went pretty smoothly for the music teams, but all the live teams cheated so they just picked names out of a hat. Then we danced for a little bit and went to bed (mixer ended at 1 AM Cali time = 4 AM Pittsburgh time)
2. The Competition
- Day of the competition went really well. We had our tech time pretty close to the scheduled time, and then we were given our dressing room pretty much from then on. We got dressed and went up to the balcony to watch the show. There were a few technical difficulties switching sound from videos to music to mics and what not, but overall it didnt effect the show too much. Here are the reviews of the teams i got to watch.
Bhangra Regiment- There was a lot of potential in this set, but there was a lot of hesitation in the dancers which messed up timing a lot. It seemed like a lot of the dancers forgot choreography and their formation spots. Energy also really fluctuated throughout the performance which made the set look a lot sloppier. I think with some more work, the team could really execute the set well and take a lot of placings. Also, there was one turla (i think it was blue?) that came out, and that took alot away from the performance. I was so distracted by the pagh that i feel like i missed a lot of the stuff that you guys did, and while the dancer did eventually take off the pagh in a proper manner, it was too late. Keep working tho, i feel like it will pay off big for you guys!
Apna Virsa- This was the first time i have ever seen you guys perform (video or live), and it was great! The biggest problem for me was that when i watch a live team every dancer has a very similar style, and that didnt seem to be the case for the guys on stage. I feel like there was a very distinct difference between the different jodis which took away from the overall unity of the performance. However, the set was great and i thought the team did extremely well.
Bruin Bhangra- This team was definitely a much more modern team. I thought that you guys had great synchronization and really good energy. I also really enjoy modern teams that still make sure to include all of the traditional aspects of bhangra. I loved the formation with the boxes (or 2 lines at the center) however you wanna think of it. It was sick and you guys executed it very well. However, I really didnt like the girl introduction thing... i would strongly revisit that concept before using it again. It really ruined the flow of the routine and i just wasnt feeling it.
3D- I was really looking forward to seeing this performance, but unfortunately we had to go down to the dressing room.
BARB- In the dressing room
Heeray Punjab Deh- Watched this performance from the side of stage, so it was hard to get the overall impact of the performance. What i saw was great tho. The singer was amazing.
LSD- Absolutely amazing job by these guys. Ricky and Nana killed it, and all of the dancers were unreal. I thought they had the best energy of the night, and definitely one of the strongest performances.
BK- Great performance. The energy was sick throughout the performance, and the khunde throw was sickkkkkkkkkk. I think there were a few coordination issues, but overall that sync wasnt too big of an issue. 2 problems i had with the set tho, was the usage of the sarangi and the magic trick at the end. To me, it sounded like the sarangi had been pre-recorded and that the player was "air" playing. I'm not sure if that was the case, but if so, it really takes away from the impact of bringing him out there. I also really didnt like the "magic trick" gimmick at the end. It was very nj/panj ish with a hint of vcu. I thought you guys had such a strong performance, and the gimmick just seemed like a way to get out of a slick transition from the end of your routine to the mela.
Virse De Waris- You guys did an amazing job. Great coordination, and energy was great throughout the set.
The Afterparty
- First off, I guess something happened at the hotel on friday night, which put the staff on edge at the start of the weekend. On saturday, all we were hearing is that everyone was getting kicked out of their room and that cops were just rolling around the floors telling everyone to leave the hotel immediately. Two of our guys were asked to leave the elevator when they were simply brining in Taco Bell for the team. The cops also entered our girls room and told them to leave the hotel when they were getting ready to go (but more on this in a second). Basically, the pre-game situation was crazy. We finally got to the after party around 12:45, and it was a lottttttt of fun for the time we were there. I heard some guy pulled out a knife around 1:30, so the after party ended and we went back to the hotel and slept.
The Staff
- First off, big thanks to the Warrior Committee for hosting a great show. I felt that the weekend went extremely smoothly, and you guys showed a great control over everything.
Simi- Simi was SCBs liaison for the weekend. She was a great from the second we arrived in Sacramento (dealing with the airline loosing my bag and another one of my teammates bag) till she dropped us back off on Sunday. Simi, Preet, and Sunny, picked us up from the airport on friday and took us straight to walmart to give us some time to get stuff we couldnt bring from pittsburgh. we then enjoyed a lunch at on the border with them, where they ordered 4 brownie sundaes for the 4 birthdays on SCB that had happened over the past 2 weeks! We also needed to get something that they didnt have at walmart, so after lunch they drove us all the way to target so we could finish up our shopping. They then took us back to the airport to get the bags that finally came in. When we finally got to the hotel, Manpreet and some of the other staff got us a practice spot for us to use, and then we went to our rooms to get all our stuff ready. Simi's room was right across from ours, so she popped out about every 10 minutes to check up on us and see if we need anything while we got our vardi ready for saturday. Right before we went to bed, Simi knocked on our door with 2 huge bags of oranges and bananas, which was amazing! The next morning, simi drove us to and from the venue and literally was there every second we needed her. At one point after the show, I was trying to get mascara off my face (which i used to fill in my dhaari a little) and it wasnt coming off, and literally 2 seocnds later a teammate walked in with face wash saying, "simi thought we might need this for the mascara." Simply put, it was crazy how helpful she was throughout the weekend, and we really couldnt thank you enough for everything!
Preet- Preet, thank you so much for all the help you were over the weekend! Preet helped drive the entire SCB clan all over the place until the weekend was done! You made the weekend so easy for us, and we're really grateful for how much you helped us out when you had a million other things to do!
Sunny- You are the man! You bailed us out of every tight situation we got into. Sunny came to help drive us around over the weekend, and also talked to the hotel management and cops when we were getting thrown out of one room. You also saved my ass later on that night hahaha. It was great hanging out with you, and we couldnt thank you enough times for all you did!
Manpreet- Thank you for help us a bunch of times over the weekend! We def "flipped a few bitches!" (its a cali thing mods, get with the lingo...)

-Gagan Dholi- Thanks a ton for playing for us this weekend! You were a beast on stage, and all the side convos we had taught me so much. I'm really looking forward to seeing you again soon, and you prob have the best backpack ever seen.

Overall, Warrior was one of the BEST competitions I have been apart of. The organization was amazing, everything we needed was taken care of immediately, and you guys were extremely hospitable.
Congrats to the other placing teams, HPD, V-DUB, and BK, and also to every other team that competed!
