its wierd cuz like mentioned in the documentary, its mainly punjabi on punjabi beef thats going on over there. these kids are trying to get RESPECT from there boys by beating up other desi's and "going up the ranks" in a way. its madd stupid. its sad that there are NO kaley in BC to set these guys straight. you want to see beef, come to tdot and start shit with the kaley here and see whats happens. you would never come back LOL (not trying to be racist).

the fact that they are goin after eachother is sad. they may be "hard" there, but they wouldnt last 5 mins in places like south central with the brotha's or in East LA with the essay's.

As far as the comparisons to other minorities, it only takes one disillusioned youth to go on a path so self destructive that a gun pointed to the head of a Black or Mexican dude is the same as a gun pointed to a "less hard" kid from Surrey. Whats worrisome is not the physical strength or "hood rep" a misguided Punjabi youth can have...its that he can get a self destructive mindset that is deadlier than any sort of weapon.

I don't think parents can really be blamed for everything. Yah sure you can keep your kid on lock down for all of middle school and high school, but if they still have that self esteem weakness, then you know some problem will develop once they go out into the real world during college or even after.

You know whats interesting. In the old days, we had clearly defined rites of passage/initiation for young boys to become men and accepted in society. The Spartans had it, the African warriors had it, Jews, Religious Scholars, Khatri/Rajputs...there was a clearly defined rite of passage that a young boy had to go to before he was an accepted Man in society. This journey helped these young kids overcome their immaturity, realize their importance to society, and become civilized men in that society. I feel nowadays, no one really has a rite of passage like that. So you got a bunch of dumbass kids who feel that society doesnt need them, they have no guidance (on a adolescene growth to maturity level), and so they find people who can offer them some sort of initiation, some sort of rite that will help them lose their fear and immature issues and then transform them into men.

Who better than gangs to offer such a service?

I don't know how well documented this really was when it comes to the gang violence here. This was more about the future (the 2 boys) and the past (jasdeep mangat), not really about whats happening in the present.

W/out trying to glorify the violence, I would just like to say this

I work with these gang members, they have the same classes that I do, they live on the same block, we know the same people, see them at the gurdawara every sunday. I have known so many friends and a couple of relatives that have been killed due to gang violence. Gary Bassi, was just found in a car 2 days ago, I heard about another shooting in Abby today. It's a constant thing, so constant that we've become immune to it. It no longer shocks me, reading that another indo-candian was killed or shot at, it no longer makes the front page news. All of these brothers and sons are becoming #'s, statistics, nothing more. We hear about it almost EVERYDAY that no one can put a name to a face, or remember how he was found or how he died, its too common these days.

Here's a deathlist, hasnt been updated since June. I would add atleast another 3-5 guys to that list that have been killed til now. http://www.warriorsreligion.com/deathlist

More than blaming the parents, what I've noticed the issue is, after talking to these guys and knowing them for so long, is the ego. The JATT personality. Roughly 70% or higher of these gang members come from well off families. Live in nice houses, drive nice cars, educated, come from secure backgrounds. Thats whats so scary about the whole thing. Usually when we hear about gang members, it's always the same story; no father, moms a crack addict, dropped out of school, live in the ghetto but the guys here have EVERYTHING. Yet, they still want to get involved in all this shit and still end up dead every week.

The mentality has changed from "gotta do anything to survive" to "fuck it, you don't know who I am and so im gonna fuck you up." There's no background story, can't even use racism as an excuse, we basically run Surrey/Abby/Vancouver. It's ironic that we have this "punjabi pride" and yet we're killing each other. Where's the pride in that?

Just in Surrey, Vancouver, Abbostford and a few neighbouring cities.

Since 1991 there have been killings of approx 80 deaths of Punjabi males, so averaging to about 4 deaths every year in gang related/drug trafficking cases.

Age group wise

18-21yrs -18 deaths

22-25- 19 deaths

26-30- 14 deaths

30 over - 10 deaths

19deaths with no age recorded

It is hard for me to truly feel sorry for these gang members when you consider they are not joining gangs as a means of survival but instead as a means to look "hard". The sob story of mommy and daddy not being around is garbage in this case...they wouldn't have to work so hard and could be home if you didn't ask for a brand new benz when you turn 16. Sure, the parents need to take responsibility and get involved in their kids' lives, but these kids are not fooling anyone.

None of them look to have any confidence or a bad bone in their body. Just a bunch of kids simply acting the part. This is nothing but a group of spoiled, ignorant kids who know nothing of real oppression, struggle and heartache that truly plagues the inner cities of Detroit, Chicago, New York, LA, etc. When you rob a liquor store to pay the rent or sell drugs to feed your family instead of doing it "just because your bored" THEN you can really have my sympathy. For kids who go to schools like Detroit who truly have very little opportunity of escaping the poverty, oppression and violence I feel sorry...for kids in a upper-middle class home, nice school, 2 parents family I just see stupidity.

With the motto, Nothing Stops a Bullet Like a Job, Homeboy Industries is giving hope to at-risk youth and former gang members in some of L.A.'s toughest neighborhoods.

Well one thing is for sure. If the atmosphere fostered more of a positive environment that put things such as education and non violence on a pedestal the future would be much brighter. It seems like a lot of these kids are surrounded too much by "martial prowess" bakwaas which in turn builds a complex. The complex makes these young men unable to assert themselves without the aid of violence.

IMO.

Interesting, what would you say factors into a non-positive environment? I'm from the DC-Maryland-Virginia area and here there's a large, but still minority, Indian population. From what I can tell, there's a huge emphasis placed on education and building a future here.

Previous comments make it seem like family income is not the issue, so I assume neither is parental education level. What contributes then to such stark differences in community? Are these kids second, or third+ generations? Could distance from the immigrant experience be contributing to this?
