WBBC Review!

WBBC! To the entire team of organizers and volunteers, I want to commend you on a job well done...exceptionally well done! Raj, Faizan, Kush...to name a few...thank you!

Gone are the days of UBC Girlz when we used to attend 10 comps plus a year, but attending this one comp made up for it all! From the team reception, to behind the scenes, to hospitality to the competition the experience was ultra fun shun and smooth! Paying attention to even the smallest details leaves an overall impact on the success of any event, and WBBC did a phenomenal job of just that!

To all friends new and old, it was great meeting you and catching up! It wasn't just the organizers who made WBBC am exceptional event but all the dancers and teams as well, so thank you for that! And for those who took me down memory lane of UBC...especially ESA...thank you!

My Review:

-Organizers/Volunteers: Helpful, resourceful, efficient and available! These guys and gals and their professionalism made the competition weekend a great experience!

-Hotel: the hotel venue worked out well, and it was a major plus point that breakfast was readily available and the hotel shuttle was complimentary to neighboring areas and shuttled us back and forth to our rented practice venue. My only suggestion would be (although may be a tough task) to find a hotel where a ballroom can be rented out and allotted to teams for practice space. The staff wasn't too impressed with teams trying to practice in dark corners of the hotel!

-Venue/Backstage: The venue and stage spacing were on par! However backstage was a fairly tight space to change and get dressed. However, the volunteers and committee members backstage were extremely helpful and ready to help at a moments notice. Our team lost a prop and we had at least 3 volunteers helping us in the search. Great job!

-Mixer: The mixer was in a nice venue, and I loved the idea of having opposing challenge teams working together in the mini competitions! Great way to get to know your opposing team and have some laughs! The photo booth was a great touch. Maybe I haven't been to a mixer in a while, but I thought there could have been more mingling shingling amoung teams. Perhaps most teams were focused on their rehearsal time at the venue that inter-mingling was secondary, but I did miss that aspect of it. It was however helpful having that nice open practice space! Although I split my jeans doing jugni (note to self, bring sweat pants next time!)

-Competition/Audience: The competition was run in a organized and efficient manner. The audience was phenonmenal (reminded me of the good ole days!) The mc's were on point and on fire!

-Afterparty: The dj's were tight and it was nice that the teams had their own line-up and got in fairly efficiently. However, as fun as it was didn't appreciate all the booze on my clothes...maybe i'm old, but could have done without spraying bottles! However nothing the organizers could have controlled. It was an afterparty, just like any other bhangra after party...

-Overall: WBBC and it's organizers did an amazing job! Organized and Effcient! Teams were treated professionally and weren't left to fend for themselves. The organizers and volunteers were helpful and resourceful...a fun and memorable weekend!!! Thank you for that!

It was a slice...until next time...Bruuuah!

Logistics:
Working with Ankush, Jaggi and Disha (aka Dishes) to get ready for the comp was a pure joy. They are professional, poised, efficient, strategic and direct. You couldnt ask for better people to do this sort of thing. You ask a question, they give you the answer. In the weeks leading up to the comp I received almost immediate responses from these three about literally any concern we had. They were strict when they needed to be about deadlines, but very understanding that last minute changes come up and were accommodating.
Jazzy!!!! Working with you was a pure joy too! :) Sucks about your shoes though. I was definitely a fan of the pink sneakers haha

Kinda late but had to leave feedback :
Arriving in New York was orb sky the worst decisions we made lol. Carrying props, bags, and trying to take the subway and trains is not fun at all. Thankfully, Ankush had told me all the subway trains to take so we just followed the path

Hotel: really nice front desk people who didn't mind us kicking it in the lobby at all. I think some floors had issues but luckily, ours was okay. Great choice but wish food was closer because it was way too freezing to walk sometimes

Mixer: Venue was great and shuttles were always on time. Probably the most fun I've ever had at mixer with all the teams being so involved. Being able to work with your matchup was a grey idea and Faizan was a really good host! (Except for the callouts every now and then lol). That pasta was so good! I wanted to actually take some to go hah. Practices after the mixer was a great idea but just sucks for the teams waiting at the end. No biggie, everything still worked out great mad it avoids teams doing late night practices at the hotel

Tech time: Everything ran smoothly and on time #wbDbc ;) minor delay but was more the venue than the organizers. I don't know why venue workers are always in a bad mood ..

Competition: show ran on time even with some tech delays which was sick. Backstage area kinda sucked because all the teams were really clustered and it was hard to breathe back there sometimes. Also, the stage was wayyy too small for a team that requires a banner.. We still managed but a bigger stage would probably be better next time around. But other than that, the competition itself was great! Crowd was nuts, committee was very helpful and made sure teams had everything that they needed when asked at the show so keep it up!

After party: typical after party with people falling all over the place lol . Wish there was another bar so I could actually get a drink haha but I liked that there was a lounge area for people to just kick it and hookah. I still had hella fun!

Committee: by far one of my favorites! They really treat you exceptionally well and every single person was always helpful. Our weekend would not have been the same without our liaison Akash! He made sure we had everything and anything we needed at all times and even before getting to New Jersey as well!
Also, a big shout out to Disha, Jaggi, and Sandeep for all the little things that they did to make sure we were all having a good time and had everything we needed! You guys are the best. :D

Vancity: #snakes ... Just gonna leave it at that ;)

Ankush: it would really be nice if you helped out every now and then ..

Haha no but to be honest, nothing would have been possible without Ankush! From working with us leading up to the competition and to the day of, he was the best! I know how "fun" it is to deal with 10 teams and their issues, but everyone left the competition satisfied in terms of the competition! ... That's all your gonna get from me lol ;)

My review of WBBC!

PRECOMP INFO - huge thanks to ankush and disha for being so helpful and informative throughout the process. disha in particular replied to any questions or concerns i had immediately, and was efficient on a whole diff level! reg pack was detailed, and everything was confirmed early on, except stage dimensions, but those were also given in due course once the arc was available to use. the team announcement videos were great, and we were kept very well in loop of everything going on. i really liked how there was a judges meeting as well as a comp organiser meeting to address any questions, and to clarify what the rubric asked for.

HOTEL - really friendly staff and great rooms in general. we got rooms with breakfast which was great, but in general food options in the hotel at any other time sucked! so any time we were hungry it was the local diner or fast food places lol. location was great in that the venue was really closeby. we also had no problems practising in the car park. a bonus would have been to have available space within the hotel for practise, but this is really hard to accommodate!

MIXER - really nice venue, shuttles were organised to the venue and tshirts were a great idea to give each matchup! i liked the mixer game and the rehearsal space at the venue was great too. a downside for me was the food lol we were starving by that point and the pasta wasnt too great! i was hoping for full on punjabi roti and sabjian, although i can understand that may have messed people up night before comp day lol. mixing wise, as the uk team, im not sure if people usually mix more at mixers in the US, but generally there didnt seem to be much mixing going on. dont think thats anything the organisers could have done something about, but would have been good to have more inter-team mingling!

TECH TIME - everything went well, teams were given breakfast too which was great with fruit. we had a lighting mistake which was quickly fixed thereafter by the committee. only criticism i have is that our team mix, which was synced with a video, was a lot slower to what we'd been practising to for the last few months! this was noticed by the entire team collectively, but not sure why or how that happened. mix speed on our actual performance wasnt as off, but was still a bit slower than what we're used to at practise.

COMPETITION - anything we needed as a team was provided so efficiently by the committee, no matter how big or small. we needed a pagh tier, and tarundeep singh from FAUJ did a brilliant job, as did disha for organising this so quickly! not only did he tie great paghs, but he helped restarched all the paghs once we realised it wasnt enough. HUGE thanks tarundeep! Mavi was on point in providing anything random like duck tape we needed for props, and letting us know where we needed to be for when. before we got to the comp venue, subway was given to all teams too. at the comp, crowd was great and the venue was nice! like others said backstage was very cramped even once ready and just waiting to go on, there wasnt much standing space, but was manageable. a bit more space for warming up etc before going on would have been great. lighting on the stage in general seemed a bit dark though.

AFTERPARTY - you north americans are CRAZY!! lool definitely beat the UK in terms of party animals! venue was really large which was great, and i really liked how upstairs there was a more chilled quieter area too. loved how before the afterparty, there were boxes of pizza waiting at the hotel. it was exactly what we needed after the comp! after the afterparty, there was so much entertainment at the comp hotel lol. different things happening on each floor, and as a non-drinker i had a blast! so much funny shit happening left and right, and there was more mixing happening than there was at the mixer lol. lobby was packed full of people, and aside from a few complaints, the hotel didnt seem to mind too much which was cool.

JUDGES MEETING - judges were very nice, approachable and clear in explaining their thoughts and feedback! faizan did a great job of making sure everything ran smoothly and it was a good environment for discussing etc. the judges stats packet provided later was really detailed and good in providing teams with analysis in how they did in different areas.

GTV - so glad harjot was at this comp. the coverage was amazing, and it was surreal to be finally be on a youtube channel i've been watching for years. i really liked the extra coverage ash and jessie were able to provide backstage by talking to teams etc. however, video wise i didnt like the go pro camera on stage as much. the changing angles made the performance harder to watch and was a bit distracting. i would say using it more intermittently at only very few key points in the routine is better than regularly switching angles. i also liked how some of the earlier GTV videos had a stage microphone to record vaajan like 'hois' etc, not sure if that was used this time! overall, great job harjot

COMMITTEE - i've said this already, but this committee was amazing. they were very, very hospitable and went out of their way to provide each team with an amazing experience. Mavi was a sick liason, and again disha you are a legend! this girl was running around backstage with bandage for one of our team with an ankle injury! any time we wanted water, we were given crates of it. any time we wanted food, someone was on hand to get it for us. i wanted a spoon for my food, ankush said he would even get me a spoon. loool! (i didnt get one btw!! :p ) we wanted to go gurdwara the day before, so sahib and shahil etc drove our whole team to the nearest one and stayed with us. jaggi and ash took us out in NYC the few days after the comp too and we had a blast. The level of team care and respect was just brilliant.

OVERALL - the best comp i've ever been to. so much attention to detail, and excellent organisation. mixer tshirts, team bags with snacks and painkillers etc, photo booth at the mixer, pickup and drop off from the airport are all things that made the experience more memorable. teams i got to talk to were really friendly and cool (shoutout to CMU, vancity and UVA!). our team had an incredible time, i would recommend this comp to every team for sure!
