So having heard numerous mixes by both of these well respected DJ's, it's not hard to figure out which of these mixes belongs to which DJ.
Despite knowing that, I tried my best to be impartial with my feedback and vote.
My vote: DJ 1
Feedback:
DJ 1 - Loved that you brought some Ashanti into the mix - huge creativity shown. It matched up very well to the intro of Jind Mahi. Also, loved the subtle effects thrown in at 0:10-0:13 - was a clean transition to Ashanti's vocals. Dropping into Malkit's Singh main vocals at 0:34 felt so "right" without a huge transition needed. I'm glad you didn't mess around with the beautiful vocals of Malkit Singh from 0:34-1:06 (that was really crucial for bringing me back in touch with the original song). Going back to Ashanti's song with Malkit's riyaaz type of sounds alternating from the left speaker to the right speaker around 1:08ish was awesome. Loved the simple/clean ending too. Overall, just an excellent job.
DJ 2 - I wasn't very impressed with the intro - just wasn't feeling it. I felt there could have been more creativity used. The bass drop transition into Malkit's singing at 0:08ish wasn't pretty. After Malkit's short "oh ho hoo" and the effect at 0:22, I was expecting more emphasis to be made on his raw vocals (which is the main beauty in the original song imho). Because of the lack of emphasis on vocals (that would peak at various points for the listener - making the mix sound for fresh), the entire segments from 0:23 to 0:51 felt too stagnant. Upon hearing your mix in more detail the 2nd time, I was honestly wanting to just fast forward over those 30 seconds because I felt it hurt your overall mix more than helped it. Following that, I was expecting more creativity (bring in a different song or clip) & using various effects to engage the listener, which unfortunately never came. Lastly, I was greatly disappointed in your ending. What the heck was up with the mix just being cut? It sounded like you didn't have enough time to come up with a proper ending so you just cut off what you did & submit it. lol. Simply compare the ending of your mix with DJ's 1 ending and you'll notice how abrupt yours sounds & makes the listener cringe (well,
at least me).
Overall, great choice of a song - you can tell it definitely gave both of these guys a challenge. For me, the choice of deciding a winner was fairly easy to pick - I was expecting more of a challenge at this level of the mixing ladder. Hope this is encouragement for DJ 2 to fight back stronger next time; I know he has the potential!
