Week 5 - BTF Ladder- 5. DJ Preet vs. 2. GSingh

DJ Preet and 2. GSingh. The challenge was to mix a Bollywood song. The original song is Agar Tum Mil Jao.

like voxanimus said, you both need to make full versions. I prefered DJ 1 though because I didn't think DJ 2's dholki worked sadly. So its DJ 1 for me..

There is a lot of quality in both mixes. Good job to you both!

Mix1 started a bit low-key but I think the approach worked as it gradually built. Well worked, and a good concept. I could see this being played at reception for the 'slow dance.' But this one seemed a bit 'safer.'
Mix2 mixed in the instrumentals well before the vocals start. I liked this concept better, but something about the tabla just seemed.. off. It took me away from the mix, and that type of distraction is not good.

This was a tough call. Ultimately, I'm going to have to go with Mix2.

My vote - DJ 1


DJ 2's instrumental section before the vocals started was fire but the tabla/dholki with the vocals threw me off and seemed like a distraction.


DJ 1's mix was a bit off (pitch matching wise). Only some of the chords were in harmony together. Could be a major/minor scale matching issue (which is hard to gel together sometimes). But still did a good job of bringing in the JT vocals at the end.

I LOVED that subtle drop at 0.33s, and this mix seemed to flow together a bit better than the mix made by DJ 2. But the way DJ 2 mixed the instrumentals in the beginning was amazing as well.


Also I realize that my votes won't count for now, but if I keep voting they will hopefully sometime soon haha.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Both these mixes have such obvious pitch issues.

DJ 1- I thought was a very nice update to the song. Kept it simple on the loops, and just let a good quality kick drive the song. However that JT sample was just awful. Not pitched properly and abrupt, I wasn't a fan.

DJ 2- I hear that 'ahh' and immediately I go back to early 2000s with Nelly and Kelly! I love the choice, but I don't think it was perfectly in key. The 'ahh' sample works at the end during the chorus, but the actual instrumental from Dillemma doesn't work. It's subtle, but it's not quite there and it just feels super weird. I actually did like the tabla, I dunno what everyones problem was. My guess is the triplet in between the downbeats is bothering people. If it had been kept simple and just had the tabla on the downbeats and then brought in the full loop for the chorus it might have been better received. Different strokes for different folks

Overall I think both had some good elements, but both also had some pitch failures. DJ 1 had a nicer kick and overall thump to the mix, but DJ 2 incorporated samples better.

I give it to DJ 2 for incorporation of more elements/complexity and the less obvious pitch failure.
