Will there be a Live Category?

According the registration packet there will be a live category if at least "3 teams can finish the preliminary protocols"

Thank You Mans for replying to the question Ricky had asked. What mans had stated was correct. If we are not able to get at least 3 live teams that can finish the preliminary protocols then we will have to eliminate the live category and make it a music competition. But, as of now it is still a half live and half music competition so everyone please keep applying. We are bringing back competitions to Cali and we are here to stay!! :)

Just out of curiosity, I've seen this at other competitions as well. Why is the registration fee so high along with the fact that its non-refundable? I know competitions also need money to host competitions but do high registration fees sway a lot of teams away from applying?

@ Fahadd, I completely agree, this is an extremely high registration fee.

It also seems that the $250 is actually the "Application fee," which in my experience normally ranges from $50-100. Thereafter, it looks like from the reg packet that there is no other fee associated when accepted to compete? At most competitions, we usually paid a registration or roster fee which was normally $25/roster member (i.e. around $300 if you have 12 dancers).

I do feel that $250, which seems really to be the application fee for this competition unless the organizers can clarify, is pretty steep considering teams aren't guaranteed acceptance into the comp.

Hello Fahadd and Armaan,

We would like to address that the $250 is the registration/application fee. There is no fees for teams beyond the $250. We have looked at many other competitions and have ranged our registration fees accordingly to many other competitions. This was a range we felt was reasonable for teams because as stated by Armaan, if you divide the total amount by a team of 12 dancers, it is only about $20 per person. As you may know throwing and putting together a bhangra competition isn't the easiest task with many expenses that goes in to throwing a well organized competition.

If you may have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us via dm or give us a call at

Thank You

^ I completely understand but those competitions are $50 for all teams to apply and then IF they get into the competition, they pay the rest of the fees. It's not as bad to lose out on $50 than it is $250. The only time your registration fee would make sense is if the team applying was guaranteed on a first come first serve basis? just curious because I want to understand more competition logistics for the future!

@WestCoastBhangraComp,

Just want to preface this that the below is my opinion, and I'm sure you have your reasons for your application/reg fee structure. I don't mean any disrespect :)

I'll echo Fahaddd's comments. Most registration fees (roster fee, post registration, whatever you want to call) are exactly in line with that $250 that most comps charge. That however isn't the application fee. An application fee of $250 is pretty dissuading imo and is a pretty hefty amount to lose if you decided to not take them.

Putting a competition together isn't easy at all with expenses for sure (I was a lead organizer for Pao Bhangra hosted by Cornell for 2 years). But I think a system of lowering the application fee ($50) and then requiring a post-reg fee of $250 thereafter works in both your favor and in teams' favor.

From a team point of view: A $50 fee is much more attractive to teams since it's a much less riskier investment. $250 is the norm for a team to be expected to pay for a post registration and is definitely more understandable to pay since they've already been guaranteed admission. Yes they net do pay $300, BUT, I'm sure most teams would be more wiling to do this rather than submit a $250 fee in which they're not guaranteed admission. Paying $50 more in the end is worth it because the team was guaranteed admission rather than submitting $250 with no guarantee of admission. When you look at collegiate bhangra teams especially, which are normally on a pretty tight budget, $250 can sometimes be 25% of their budget!

From a comps point of view: Absolute increase in the amount of applications. $50 is more attractive, hands down, especially for new teams looking to compete. Furthermore, you'd be able to collect $250 on top of that. If you did some quick math for arguments sake, let's assume you have 8 spots for the competition and say you had 10 teams apply under the current application rules for a net of $2,500. If you instead implemented my suggestion and still had 10 teams apply, you would collect $500 in application fees and $2,000 in post-reg fees for a total of $2,500. The difference here is that this strategy gives teams more of an incentive to apply! Realistically, I would expect you to get at least 15 applications. That result gives you application fees of $750 and post-reg fees of $2,000 for a total of $2,750.

The other caveat though is since this post-reg fee is non-refundable and there's a likelihood of a team dropping (because let's be honest, this happens all the time), that would give you the ability to take another team who might be on your waitlist and charge them a $250 fee. So under the same scenario of getting 15 applications and then having 1 team drop, you can instead net $3,000.

If you asked any team whether they'd pay $250 for non-guaranteed admission vs. $50 for non-guaranteed admission (but paying $300 total), I think the answer would be pretty clear.

At the end of the day though, I think comps need to incentivize teams, especially new, upcoming ones, to come to their comp and the way you do that is offering a lower application fee. And as I said above, I believe it works in both the teams' favor and comps' favor :)

Feel free to PM me if I can explain further!

West Coast Bhangra would like to thank all the teams that have applied for the regular registration deadline! We've had an amazing amount of applications turned in and we truly appreciate it. Our late registration deadline is set on December 20th at 11:59pm PST with a registration fee of $275. We want one thing to be clear that if your team turns in a late registration it will not affect your acceptance to the competition. Everyone is given a fair opportunity. We obviously know that at times it may be hard to get your team together and some teams don't start till a later time compared to other teams. We will be reviewing each application fairly once the deadline is over. Once again, please keep that date in mind as we look to announce our official line up on December 24th.

Thank you,

West Coast Bhangra
