Ridiculous and amazingly stupid on the part of the people who reported them. Oh what fear and paranoia has done to this country...

Yes, but there is a gem in the story, and that's the 'professionalism of the FBI'

they are the ones who have the power to make it more than simply a delayed vacation, and luckily they were the ones with the coolest heads

CNN has become such a piece of shit. This article is terrible. Random quotes everywhere which add more context but don't build on anything. Mr. Irfan states, ""The airline told us that we can't fly their airline," ...But just a few lines before CNN wrote, "AirTran said...the family was offered full refunds and can fly with AirTran again."

So what the hell is going on?? Why couldn't CNN provide some consistency in their reporting, even if the two sides have differing views?

My guess is that AirTran did not want to rebook them for a later flight and decided instead to give a refund so they could buy another ticket....that's not racial, it's economical. If they start assuming the expenses, then the cost of being 'safe' become much higher. That means the incentive to call in suspicious activity drops (whether or not that's bad is up to interpretation). So if they set the precedent they'll have to pay every time someone is taken off a flight, including miscellaneous things like baggage, parking, hotel, etc. That can get expensive when millions fly daily, so they are trying to avoid that cost and shove it under "we did what we were supposed to do, sorry".

So the story is probably some random ignorant white girls were being paranoid and reported the family to the airlines, who are required by law to contact the FBI who did a quick investigation and plead on behalf of the family, whom they realized were wrongly accused, and AirTran didn't want to rebook them for free as that would be costly and would set a precedent, so they refunded the family and told them they could buy another round of tickets.

Instead, CNN makes AirTran look like racial assholes when really it's the two white girls who should be getting the blame

Swi,

A few things
1. Agreed, poorly written article.

2. +1 FBI

3. The two white girls are paying customers of AirTran and have the right to inform AirTran if they feel unsafe. AirTran has a commitment to every customer to ensure that they feel comfortable and safe aboard their airplane. If the two girls felt unsafe - fine, inform the cabin crew and obey protocol. I don't agree with that happened after that though.

4. AirTran, however, should have been SUPER apologetic to the family for the ordeal and embarrassment they went through and absorbed any financial loss to make sure the family gets on the next flight. This is absolutely ridiculous if they refunded their tickets so they could save some $$$? This is an airline that reported a net profit of $52.7 million in 2007, I'm sure a few hundred $ won't hurt them especially when it comes to making sure their customers (the family) are taken care off.

The fact is that a lot of people have faced discrimination at the airport. There have been so many stories (on the news and personally that I have heard) of Muslims or even Desis being asked to get off the airplane because passengers/pilot/cabin crew don't feel safe having them on board.

They have such strict procedures to make sure everyone else feels safe but when people are wrongly accused and asked to come off the airplane, there should be strict procedures in place that guarantee that wrongly accused customers will be guaranteed the next flight by the airline and the best treatment possible to make up for what they went through.
