Negative: Well none for me but I've seen people do bad in classes and almost get kicked out, people get injured and effects their everyday life, Lots of money for travelling to competitions and applying to competitions (this is mostly for new teams)

gsingh- can you elaborate?

=)
It gives me a lot to look forward to as far as the year goes, past just school and getting out of school. Competitions are not only mad fun but the networking aspect is also great. I get to stick closer to my roots (personal thing cuz I've always lived in areas where there are NO desi's) so to chill people who share a common passion is a plus. The physical workout is amazing and I prefer it over any traditional workout because it is a lot more fun. do bethka all day and see if your patt don't sting like mofo's.

Negatives: lots of time taken out of your life to practice and perform etc, and sometimes it does conflict with school. It also costs money, lots of money in vardiyan, travel, lodging etc, but its all in an effort to have fun and win comps (and money) in the process.

Positive effects/individual- it allows me to explore the various ideas i have in my head in regards to making choreography/formations/mixing. it boosts my mental creativity because my goal as a person involved in bhangra is to improve myself in anyway i can (just like in any other activity/sport), and so i try to top or match what i've done before and it works my brain in a way. another positive factor that comes from bhangra is that it forces me away from being complacent.

Positive effects/across the circuit- we all know the bhangra circuit is getting more and more advanced and popular so the standards are changing when it comes to competitions and what have you. Competition is stronger which leads to teams having to work harder and cooperate more to strive to be the best they can so you get more positive input from each person. the social factors from the bhangra scene as a whole can have positive effects on us mentally; we meet people that share a common interest and so we expand our relationships on a larger spectrum, different ages, we learn how to maintain distal relationships with people. i guess a lot of what im touching up on is more of the social points we get out of the bhangra scene.

Negative/individual- bhangra can get very time consuming as well as distracting. You get so addicted to everything bhangra related that you lose focus on other things like school and work. Once you start with one aspect of bhangra you want to learn more. i started with playing dhol, then doing bhangra, then back to dhol, then i wanted to tie legit paggs, play the algoza, and now im at mixing. and this is where ill refer to where you said it may be stressful or depressing. i kinda see that from when there is an overload on a person esp. when they have to do choreo and make mixes. It tackles your responsibility and you have another thing to worry about. theres always deadlines in bhangra when you have comps or need to make mixes for teams so that can get very stressful. bhangra has so many different components and when you try getting involved in all of them you lose focus and time for other things. on top of that bhangra makes me a more competitive person since it is just like a sport. i get more ambitious so it can change certain attributes of a person.i guess that sort of effects your mental health? idk i always digress...

Negative/the circuit- like i said before, competitions are getting more interesting now with the turn that bhangra has taken. Its developed into such a popular thing and everyone loves going to competitions, meeting new people, just being involved in the bhangra scene in general. this can affect one's mental health negatively because once you get dragged in to the system its hard to avoid it. like i said before the time consumption can prevent you from getting to other things you have to worry about and this adds a buncha stress. idk about everyone else but my mom nags so much about how ill i do is eat, sleep, and breathe bhangra and how ill fuck up with school. so just the possible factor of having say your mom or dad constantly, *excuse my language*, bitching at you about bhangra consuming your life. just another lil stress factor that someone might face.

hope this helped, i digress a lot!! but maybe a couple claims i made were helpful?

<3 u cookie

its surprising how none of the dancers mention the partying and getting drunk part.
anyways, I'm not on any team, just did small performances back in high school. It took away from school time, but its kinda good for socializing.

Hi! Cool idea!

Positives:

-All the exercise is so great for physical and mental health. Similar to the runner's high, a long practice can release endorphins and consistent practice/exercise gives you more energy.
-Meeting tons of new people: new members of the team, friends of team members, other teams at comps, etc.
-Working with others towards a common goal and staying dedicated and motivated towards reaching that goal (whether it be to enjoy yourself with a good performance, perform well for pay or place at a comp)
-Time management: I personally do better the busier I am (to an extent). Knowing I have to work around practices, I make sure to get other things for work or class done.
-WE GET TO DO BHANGRA!!! Being able to share an awesome type of dance and spread culture and awareness of the dance. Being able to listen to bhangra all the time and hear new songs/mixes and develop the art while learning more and more.
-Also, improving memory and hand-eye coordination.
EDIT: Oh Yeah, and having a reason to travel and see new cities. Every trip is a little vacation and I love seeing new cities, even if only for a few days.

Negatives:

-Injuries! VERY hard on your body... feet, knees, ankles and back in particular
-Time consuming: strain on classes and on relationships when it becomes too time consuming or affects making plans
-Can be money consuming...
-Pretty exhausting and stressful sometimes, and even more so for captains, choreographers, competition organizers...

But pretty sure we can all agree the positives outweigh the negatives. I plan to bhangra as long as my body lets me and even after that it'll be bhangra in my head ;)

This is really good COOKIE! :)

Positives:
-Some of the good things are that we meet great individuals on the teams we dance for.
-The practices help the dancers perfect themselves at Bhangra also helps build up stamina.
-Being part of a team is basically being part of a family because the people you dance with automatically become close to you and with that you make good friends.
-Going to different bhangra competitions locally and nationally to compete which gives a team a name out in public also just experiencing new places and people.
-Meeting new people at bhangra competitions that you possibly would never meet in your life. For example I can say half of the people that I talk too or i have on Facebook are somehow tied in with Bhangra.
-Hosting a bhangra competition is really a big positive because its really exciting to put together a show where all these different teams come from different areas to compete and hang out.
-Some people have never done bhangra and now they are teaching others because they joined a team and practiced hard for a period of time and now a lot of things they wouldnt have known a year ago.

Negatives:
-People starting drama, talking shit, spreading rumors on a team
-You have to put in a lot of time from work and school to be part of Bhangra
-It can be tiring and stressful when things don't go as planned.
-A lot of Injuries.
-Practices sometimes run really late which lead to less studying lol.
-Some people get so caught up in Bhangra that they forget about school and their grades drop then we get angry parents.
-Bhangra can be expensive because all teams, especially new teams need Vardiyiaan, Props (Katos, Daangs, Saaps and etc..) and then airfare if your competing out of state, team mixes if being made by another DJ and other small things.
-As a competition gets closer, the STRESS levels arise because everyone is tripping if things are perfect, and then again school kicks in taking days off from work and PARENTS!! lol

But overall for me Bhangra has been a great experience. Being on a team and by hosting a bhangra competition. Both ways I met so many people and learned so much that I did not know before. Going to competitions and just the whole vibe is different. Bhangra = fun and pain in the rear sometimes lol

P.S. Cookie email it to me as well when your complete with it :)

Warped sense of Punjabi identity and culture.

In the same way Bhangra can expose someone to their culture and help them collaborate and meet people from similar backgrounds the whole idea of dancing on stage for entertainment and competition is a modern phenomena.

Punjab has a rich cultural heritage in terms of literature, music, arts and much more. There is a sizable population of people in the Bhangra community who have become interested about their heritage through initially dancing Bhangra. But from my experience there has also been a lot of people who limit their perception of Punjabi culture in terms of what bhangra songs portray and are either not adequately exposed to other parts of Punjabi culture because of less time or just because the monotonous sound of a dhol and people singing about beating each other up/playing kabaddi/fassao'ing kuriyan drowns everything out.
