all girls team vs. co-ed

[In regards to your POL post]

I think NJ and UBC Girlz have somewhat already gone towards this, the way they wear chadar and vest and similar jewelry, plus UBC Girlz even wear phuman. However, maaajor problem with this is pure size, still :-\

Real-Life Stats

asd guy #1 - 6 foot, 160 lbs
asd guy #2 - 6 foot, 150 lbs

asd girl #1 - 5 foot, 100 lbs
asd girl #2 - 5 foot, 95 lbs

So I don't think this would work on a co-ed team but it could work if an all-girls team went towards traditionally male costumes. Not saying whether I think girls teams should or not, but it could possibly help. I also must agree that in pure bhangra comp, girls should do all bhangra - no giddha or anything.

I thought the POL post was interesting and will comment on that later...but in terms of girls teams and their current costumes, I really disliked the NJ girls costumes. You have to look good on stage before you try to emulate guys, and those costumes just looked weird. When girls wear chadars they're not tied like lungis. They can be restricting in bhangra and they don't look very good onstage. If we're going to go with copying guys costumes, I'm not sure how happy judges would be with girls showing some skin the way guys lungis do when not tied properly. So unless someone comes up with a different solution I think salwar kameezes are the way to go.

Really? I actually like those outfits. I think it added a lot to their dance.

a GIRLS suit can be as FUN as a guys...maybe not with sooo many accessories
but the suits can be 'fashionable' be creative ;)

I think it should....Giddah is fun to do...and hey it can be a audience pleaser....i bet its been done but do a live giddah segment...

It's not about fun or fashion, but the POL post was pointing out the physical advantages that guys' costumes have. Namely, the turla to accentuate head movements and the way that a chadar spreads out and looks sweet when you get low.

Personally I don't like chunnis as part of competition costume. I think they help a lot in giddha but I never see them helping bhangra. They are heavy and make you look smaller and are distracting and annoying. The only thing it helps with is uniformity. Howeverrrr, it would look awfully weird without them... Maybe one day girls can make them smaller and pin them over shoulders that might help, and just keep gutt+parandha or hair in neat buns. If a team did that right now everyone would be all *gasp* they are too moderrnnn

personally I like Jawani Girls (vancouver) and the UBC girls outfits. I like how the ubc girls wear phuman, it looks awesome. They wear lungis, or whatever they're called (they're not chadrey)m but they still keep it feminine. Looks good.

I have to disagree, I don't like them that much.

Girls have to dance like girls while they do bhangra. I'm not a fan of girls trying to dance like guys, it just doesn't look right. I think the girls outfits is fine, ya I agree the guys are better but I feel like they go really well on a coed team.

yaa maybe this shud be in the main discussion-but i wasnt sure where it wud go......and the think UBC girls had amazingggg outfitssssss i luv their outfis...but on a co-ed team i'd rather have girls wear salwar....and if the girls do wear the chadar and all well i dont want it to look like its made for a guy (b/c i remember seein girls wearin wat looked exactly like the guys outfits)....but 1 team definetly pulled it off (VIBE-05)

and wat do u mean girls have to dance like girls when they do bhangra?????? and how do u define a move as a guy move or a girl move (i see 1 distinction-girl moves-which guys dont do)

just to clarify, I would prefer a girl wearing a suit during a bhangra performance any day. I brought up the other type of dress (jawani girls and ubc girls) as an alternative because we were talking about girls dressing up more like guys. No doubt, their style of dress is hot, but I would prefer a suit on a girl. I am the biggest opponent to girls trying to dance manly. Its just not attractive at all. Girls shouldnt be dancing like guys. PERIOD.........parul, basically what I think havish means (assuming that he and I have the same reasons that girls shouldnt do bhangra like guys) is that girls shouldnt be getting really low and opening their legs, or slapping their inner thighs. its just too manly. Those are just examples.

Ya, Meistro pretty much summed it up, I mean that girls should dance like girls when they perform. When you watch UBC sometimes its like they are trying to be men or something, I just don't like it, girls can do bhangra and look good doing it without having to act like guys.

Meistro.
Finally. In regards to slapping their inner thighs. I'm not alone in this belief. I choreographed our entire routine last year but made sure the girls would have their hands on their waists when guys hit their thighs. A few people thought that this was decreasing coordination, but I went with my gut feeling that this was just wrong for girls to do.

There will ALWAYS be steps that only one gender should do. It's not sexist, but simply practical. Guys shouldn't be shaking their hips on stage (not that any bhangra team should) just as girls shouldn't be slapping their inner thighs.

what a nice discussion. thank you btf.

p.s. I agree...slapping of the thighs...girls shouldn't do it..it just looks awkward...but I'm sure Havish and Meistro remember a time when there was a huge debate between girls and guys as to why girls can't slap their thighs. Girls just did not find it fair. It is nice to see girls that understand that girls should dance like girls and not slap their thigh...

ok being a girl I have to agree with the guys.
As much as I love bhangra and they way it is done I think girls shouldnt be too aggressive, in the sense of what Meistro said

^^ i agree...I know the girls can do it but there is always a limit of how a girl should do bhangra
