Hey Guys,

Summer is right around the corner, so let's have some fun! Here's what I'm gonna do and feel free to give suggestions!

America's Favorite BHANGRA Crew!
2009 Random Tournament Style

In a nutshell, let's find out America (and by America, I mean North America)'s most favorite bhangra team by comparing performances through an online tournament style polling system. We will get 64 bhangra team performances from the last 1 year and randomly put them into pairs. Vote who is better and the winner goes into the next round. YOU get to decide who wins by whatever criteria you think is best!

In the first part, we need to get people/teams to submit their performances. I'll release the submit form in a few days (once I receive feedback from you guys) and people can submit a performance by entering team name, competition name and a youtube link to the performance. All teams who competed must be from North America (USA/Canada/Mexico) and the performance must be at a competition from May 15, 2008 to May 15, 2009.

Once we get 64 teams, we will start the voting process! We give people 1 week for voting and 1 vote per IP. I can moderate voting abuse. Vote for teams as they compete in the rounds with the option of watching the youtube video if you feel that's necessary. You will not need to vote for all teams competing, but it will be recommended. Peope have one week to select which teams they think are better and at the end of the week, we determine the winners and get out round 2. Team pairings will be randomized! The whole process will take 8 weeks to complete (first week to get teams to submit performances).

Let me hear feedback and suggestions!

sick idea....extend the deadline to end of May so we can get Bruin performances in there too. Interesting to see how this will manifest into a viable online platform...sounds a bit tricky to get the videos, IPs, randomizations all in order.

Good point! Extended. We will give teams till June 1st to submit videos/performances and give round 1 2 weeks of voting due to the large amount of teams involved. (For those people who will actually watch the videos to judge)

In terms of online platform, there will be work on my end, but it shouldn't be bad at all. I've done similar things in the past. With this, we can the set the stage for a variety of spin-off tournaments like Regional Teams Tournaments (with people being able to create brackets akin to March Madness)..etc

let me know if you need some help setting up the platform. I assume you'll be embedding youtube clips to save bandwidth and running some php/js to do the actual bracket?

I think for the first one, we'll do a free for all. Have people vote on who they think is better. If they honestly think a live performance is better than a modern one, then it's their opinion. If someone likes a co-ed team better than an all-girl team, then it's their opinion. Maybe the one after this we can separate it into categories and find Amrika's Favorite Live Team or Amrika's Favorite All-Guy team..etc

when u gunna get the team listing up? :p
I'll get a submit form up in a few days. Right now I'm just looking for feedback and concerns people have before I start releasing it!

A team can only submit one performance. And once they submit it, it will be added to a roster on the site so people can see what other teams are already on board. (I will not release competition/youtube links until round 1 though to be fair)

Kinnel sick idea!!!

I really think though you should have separate brackets atleast in the beginning. Initial pairings should be randomized into maybe 6 subcategories, such as modern co-ed, traditional co-ed, modern all guys, traditional all guys, all girls teams, other. That would eliminate this opinion of style bias you are putting into the competition from the start..but if you account for that initially, you can reduce it closer to the 16, 8, and 4 marks. This way it will be based more on the quality of the performance as a whole rather than someone's opinion on whether they prefer traditional or modern.

Hypothetical example: VCU and empire start out against eachother. More BTFer's favor the traditional style of VCU than the modern style of Empire, so Empire gets shot down in round 1.
BUT IF they started in different categories, and then Empire and VCU went face to face in the final four, then you know that they were good enough in their sphere to be the best of the best.
And you can arrange it so that it will not necessarily be 4 different "types" in the final four (could be 2 all guy traditional and 2 modern co-ed), but atleast you know that at that voting has shown that the overall quality of the team's performance was the winning factor that got them this far, not what style of bhangra they dance.

In sum, I just think there will be too much voting bias if you didn't do this.

What do you think?

hahaha worddd... with NSJ's return and everything, but I guess this is a slippery slope and someone might ask for yet another extension!

either way - its good cuz there's nothing else to do in summer, so extending it is nice :) good idea kinnell

Let me guess final 2 will be SGPD and VCU
Vivek...wise words from a vet....SGPD and VCU are the teams of the time...not taking anything away from how good they are, but once bhangra teams become dominant...there are no difficult choices for anyone to make...hahaha..everyones just gonna pick SGPD and VCU over most everybody...its like if we did this back in the day...KJ would win inevitably...

this is a waste of time and effort in my opinion.

Kapi, let's assume we did: Live, Music, Co-ed, Single-Gender. The problem with this is that we would need to get equal amounts of all four. Your reasoning makes sense and I will try my best to categorize in a fair manner, but if it ends up with two teams competing out of their categories due to an uneven amount of teams in categories, it would be unfair to them.

And my problem with designating traditional versus modern is that there are shades of gray. How many traditional moves must a team have before they are considered traditional. If they have crypt-walking, are they considered modern? Absolute traditional would be 8-guy live, so Kapi, we can put that into Live. We don't want to start debates on who is traditional and who is not.

lol way too far away. No extension. Sorry.

A few key differences. Teams submit their own (even though others can submit other teams as well). A more interactive online platform. I look forward to suggestions to make sure that this does not fizzle out.

SGPD/VCU Final two? Probably.

But Jeeti, why not give them first place prizes everytime they get selected in a line-up without watching the routine? They are dominant teams, but it's fun to see who they beat and how they beat them. In addition, it's not always about the top 2 winners. It can also be about who else beat who. Who is the final four? Who is the final 8?..etc
