bhangra at american clubs

idk if this is relevant to this category, but w.e

so anyway i was downtown last night in buffalo, at a place called sky bar, huge bar/club on top of a 5 story building thats outside, so as we were leaving around 3:30, SHER PUNJABI starts playing, and i flipped the eff out. idk who the dj was but im pretty sure he/she was not desi, and thats the only bhangra song that was played. i know back in the day clubs used to play "beware of the boys" with jay z and punjabi mc, but i was shocked to hear sher punjabi.

anyway, i just thought it was sick to hear some bhangra/indian flava at a non desi party, was wondering, do bigger clubs in places like nyc/vancounver/toronto/boston/dc ever play stuff like this? southeast asia takin overrrrrr haha

yo i wouldve flipped too. and i know exactly what your talking about with the mundian to bach ke (beware of the boys) track that is STILL played today at parties that are american/desi mixed.

besides at basement bhangra (obvs), I have actually heard Bhangra songs besides ''Beware of the Boys" at some non-indian party lounges/clubs in NYC...I can't remember which song it was but it was pretty random...but it's pretty sweet not gunna lie.

Dayum, I got your text last night. That is pretty cool that they are giving bhangra some mainstream air play. It definitely has the potential to blow up like the reggaeton craze 3-4 years ago (Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Wisin y Yandel,etc). Most of the people in NA who started buying those reggaeton albums didn't know any spanish but simply loved the 'way it sounded'. Even though I would love to see bhangra get more air play, I would want the industry to remain in control of those who value our culture. Once hollywood notices that "this type of music sells = $$$", they will exploit the hell out if it.

Indian music other then bhangra is played at other places too...Starbucks plays Nusrat, I heard it a few times...in NYC also.

I was at Koi Lounge in Montreal last month, and the DJ played Mundian to Bach Ke and Kangna right after. No one else was really into it.

besides that...I wonder how the non-bhangra lovers reacted when Sher Punjabi came on. Did they just oddly stare at the dancers or did they follow the "screw the light bulb, pat the dog" instructions (jeez, i really get sick seeing that at weddings...)?

Every last thursday of the month, they have an event called High Society in Vancouver at a posh upscale club called Ginger 62. There is also Beats without Borders but that doesnt happen as often. There arent any weekly club nights that happen (from what i know).

I love it when bhangra is played anywhere. In DC, not much goes on with bhangra nights. I know some DJs want to bring it out more, but it's hard i guess. They're forced to remix it with hiphop and try to make it work.
I would like to see more in the area. Of course, we have our local college nights, where Bhangra is a must. But nothing in terms of clubbing. There are the Bhangra Blowout after parties. Those all vary in where you go.

While I was interning Fall 2007 in London, every club I went played Beware of the Boys. Guaranteed. Sometimes it'd be closing time, and the DJ would see me there, and just play it. Of course I went all out because it was the ONLY bhangra song I heard that night. But all the indians loved it. All the white people went crazy as well. I have a video I believe on my laptop of the DJ playing it at Oceana (one of my favorite clubs in greater London)...the place went crazy! It's a giant club room, and wow. I'll find it and post it online. Everyone was going crazy, and that's really when all the white girls tried to find indian guys to dance with. It was the most fun i've had.

Also, every monday night there's a club called the Works (in Kingston), and it's a bhangra night. Every week...and the house DJ is Jags Klimax (producer of Heer). There were a lot of different bhangra nights...but that's likely due to the huge population of punjabis. If only it happened here in dc :-\

There's a place called Medjool in SF, when I've been there on Saturdays they've played a fair amount of Bhangra along with Hip Hop/Top 40...
