Meis I was thinking anywhere in Canada...Vancouver would work for sure! There's def more resources and a much bigger punjabi community that would assist with a camp in Canada vs. US.

FOR FOLK SAKE GUY hahaha

That'd be awesome. I'd definately go. I'm guessing you're thinking it would be an overnight camp somewhere in the wilderness?

For the past 8 years (past 3 I've volunteered) I've been going to this annual gurmat (sikhi) camp where it's held at a camp ground for a week. Facilities, cabins, rec hall, dining hall are all provided there as well as recreation activities such as boating, watertubing, and other water activities.

It takes a lot of planning, and depending on how many campers you want to attend (at this camp we have 20 to 30 staff members for 90 - 100 campers). Campers are charged 275 bucks and us volunteers donate 100 bucks each to cover other expenses. We also raise atleast 10 grand. In total it takes atleast 25 to 30 grand to run a big week long camp.

If there was an overnight bhangra camp like that.. even for the weekend like 3 nights 4 days kind of thing, it'd be awesome and cheaper than a week. I know a lot about what it takes to run camps like this but this is just my input on this concept. GOOD IDEA though. =)

Eeeeek this is my first post. :D

it could be done in all the major cities n stuff...cuz if its only 1 place in the whole NA then only local people could attend since flights will be costly if you can't drive to it.
vancouver/toronto/virginia area/somewhere in cali/seattle would be sick places to held them.

Naveen....I went to Lohgarh too....back in the day! We brought a crew from Michigan.....that was my very first bhangra performance.....I remember dancing to Punjabian Da Dhol Vajda off Planet Bhangra on the last day.........good times.

And about the bhangra camp....I think that would be absolutely amazing. Def would make time for that and would want to have a hand in organization as well....if anyone wants to get this started....hit me up.

Hold it anyplace where there are fields of wheat or sarson (but I don't think they have mustard fields in NA).

This is genius! It'd be great way to get kids started in bhangra...or any of us really.

the circuit would be even stronger if we had this kind of camp.

I soooo mentioned this to someone once. I would go for sure.

"We don't give a Folk" loooowe it.

This could be one of those things that National Bhangra Board or whatever thing people were talking about before puts on!

Money would probably be a major issue....if people would be willing to volunteer though that would be amazing...

Wait, is this gonna be for kids and the BTF crowd would be counselors? Or could we make this for kids and for us? I would wanna go, but more as a participant! I love the ideas like judges lectures, boli sessions, dhol lessons [I think it's useful to know elements and basic skills of dhol even if you're just a dancer], coaching, and everything.

ahhhh i would be soo there!!! we should do it here in cali...like yuba city or Fresno area....lots of keth (farms) there...make it feel more of punjab setting...=] Do bhangra on a tractor...wowerz

I think it would be for us and kids! even if you know a lot about bhangra/punjab...you can ALWAYS learn something more. I say we get a paypal account going...get some donations and get this thing started!!!!! =D

Basic dhol skills are interesting...
i think people should know the basic bols...such as chaal, dhamaal, jhummar, summi, phummanian, bhangra, mirza (kinda advanced), and lehriyan.

Just for the sake of teaching the choreo...it's easier to explain the beat that you're dancing to.

I think this is an absolutely great idea, and I agree with most people that it has to be in the larger cities...... I went to go learn bhangra in India, and if summer acedemies or like camps could open here, It'd just be an easier way to learn for all of the youth in my prespective...

Summer Camps...

I was thinking...with all the interest with Bhangra and the relative popularity among the youth from india and even in American youth...is it a possibility to hold bhangra camps to teach individuals about the different aspects of a bhangra dance? You know, a proper way so that everyone could spread the wealth. We could have individuals from teams go to camp sites and people could dorm/drive to locations to learn. Just a thought that I wanted to throw out there.
