It's an opportunity that is simple to do, but difficult to do well. It's fraught with landmines on fairness, usefulness, geographic bias, and power issues. But yes, it could be done well.

^ Exactly. Difficult issue. I have no solution either.Swi said:We talked about this awhile ago, and it got hung on the issue of who would govern the body that sees the operations.Nikhil said:Big Sal,
The reason why I think we could do with some sort of centralized body is because of uniform recognition and standardization of judges, competitions, as well as merits (on a competition basis, team basis and dancer basis). I think we all take bhangra pretty seriously right? So it's about respecting the seriousness with which we take bhangra....making it legitimate so that it's not just a dance thing. I mean, we all train like athletes and we take every year like it's a season. So why not structure it as such?
The problem always comes down to, who leads it? Who decides who leads it? It's not a simple question and the long-term solution to this eludes me

and i dont think you should be able to discredit a team because they are still active. its not cornells fault that they are a collegiate team thats been going strong for what, 15 years or so?

Im bringing back the old school and dating myself by saying this but MIT Bhangra and Texas Bhangra during the early 2000s/Boston Bhangra years..those teams were a force back when comps were held in school cafeterias..Basim said:Hmmm, I think you need to alter your criteria for this "Hall of Fame" list.faizan said:2. Empire can't get in, they still compete
So far,
1. kj
2. sher
3. gabroo shokeen
4. UBC
5. LBC
are the favorites
Check the teams competiting in US West in 2010: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/elite-8-bhangra-invitational-team-announcement-8/
You also need to make a clear distinction between pioneers of modern bhangra and being in your "hall of fame" list. For example, TBT influenced modern bhangra (especially live) just as much as any other team you have listed imho.
Also, according to your "dominance" critera.. most of the true pioneers of Bhangra in North America, who paved the way for these "Hall of fame" teams, could NOT be on the list. See Navkarn's post. I'm sure some of the really old school bhangra members (if they are still active in the scene) could give you more insight into the times when Bhangra was first hitting the stage and most competitions were just forming. Without those teams, many "hall of fame" teams might have been non-existent or might have not had a platform to display their talents.
Just food for thought,

Haha, yessss Danny! All I remember from that time was that MIT & Texas were trading blows at the biggest comps for collegiate teams - Blowout & Fusion to be particular. Unfortunately their winnings didn't last long.. I think from about 1998-2002 were the prime years.KalaShere said:Im bringing back the old school and dating myself by saying this but MIT Bhangra and Texas Bhangra during the early 2000s/Boston Bhangra years..those teams were a force back when comps were held in school cafeterias..
