It can only be done by someone people respect, but who doesn't give a shit what people think.

Ah. Yes, if this organization handles things well beyond the scope of a "Bhangra Hall of Fame," then yes I see the potential for it. I think we've discussed it both offline and on BTF. It's an opportunity that is simple to do, but difficult to do well. It's fraught with landmines on fairness, usefulness, geographic bias, and power issues. But yes, it could be done well.
+1

We could all agree on a team like KJ making the Hall of Fame but when you get to teams that had a great regional impact but never got hype in Toronto, Cali or Vancouver it could be controversial.

A bit surprised it wasn't said, but PDDS Bhangra at the very least should be honorable mention.

Big Sal,
The reason why I think we could do with some sort of centralized body is because of uniform recognition and standardization of judges, competitions, as well as merits (on a competition basis, team basis and dancer basis). I think we all take bhangra pretty seriously right? So it's about respecting the seriousness with which we take bhangra....making it legitimate so that it's not just a dance thing. I mean, we all train like athletes and we take every year like it's a season. So why not structure it as such?
We talked about this awhile ago, and it got hung on the issue of who would govern the body that sees the operations.

The problem always comes down to, who leads it? Who decides who leads it? It's not a simple question and the long-term solution to this eludes me
^ Exactly. Difficult issue. I have no solution either.

kj, vibe, mbt, cornell, ubc, nj...those are the og teams of the modern circuit that influenced every team competing now in some way or other

and i dont think you should be able to discredit a team because they are still active. its not cornells fault that they are a collegiate team thats been going strong for what, 15 years or so?
14 years :)

I think with a concept like this, it should just be a BTF poll. We should start with submissions and edify it from there if needed.

I dont think TEAMS should be in the hall of fame

Look at the NBA, NHL, MLB, etc

It doesnt say Celtics are in the Hall of Fame, Leafs, Yankee's

Its players from those teams, so shouldnt the dancers themselves be in it, not the TEAM

(Exceptions are the Olympic teams, cuz well..they represent the country)

4. UBC
5. LBC

Hmmm, I think you need to alter your criteria for this "Hall of Fame" list.

Check the teams competiting in US West in 2010: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/elite-8-bhangra-invitational-team-announcement-8/

You also need to make a clear distinction between pioneers of modern bhangra and being in your "hall of fame" list. For example, TBT influenced modern bhangra (especially live) just as much as any other team you have listed imho.

Also, according to your "dominance" critera.. most of the true pioneers of Bhangra in North America, who paved the way for these "Hall of fame" teams, could NOT be on the list. See Navkarn's post. I'm sure some of the really old school bhangra members (if they are still active in the scene) could give you more insight into the times when Bhangra was first hitting the stage and most competitions were just forming. Without those teams, many "hall of fame" teams might have been non-existent or might have not had a platform to display their talents.

Just food for thought,

~ Basim :)
Im bringing back the old school and dating myself by saying this but MIT Bhangra and Texas Bhangra during the early 2000s/Boston Bhangra years..those teams were a force back when comps were held in school cafeterias..

Haha, yessss Danny! All I remember from that time was that MIT & Texas were trading blows at the biggest comps for collegiate teams - Blowout & Fusion to be particular. Unfortunately their winnings didn't last long.. I think from about 1998-2002 were the prime years.

Not sure if MIT has done big competitions as of lately, but I know Texas Bhangra has been pretty dormant in the national competition scene for a few years now. It's shame really because as as a former UT student, I know the school has a ton of resources (lots of desi kids! actually lots of students in general - one of the largest campuses in the U.S.) & talent (lots of people interested/experienced in dancing) that they could make better use of.

Bhangra and the circuit has changed a whole lot since then.. no more crazy stunts all over the place + dancing with rumaals tied on rings + all the same/limited "formations" on stage, etc etc. lol.

Btw, if you want a throwback on teams that dominated the scene in the early years, check my post here: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/what-are-your-top-10-bhangra-teams-in-north-america/msg182607/#msg182607

Hope things are well for you in Boston & congrats on your recent placing! You're a TRUE Cadet ;)
