Yes, a bit Cornell oriented, but I don't think it will be much of a problem.
I agree...dont see a problem with it either.
If they are qualified then they are. who cares if they somehow were involved with Cornell.

The money is going to Homeless Children?s Educational Fund of Allegheny County (HCEF) its for a good cause
yeah it sucks for the teams that didnt get their money...like someone said its been 9 months call the committee

After competing last year and speaking with the judges. I can say with confidence that 2 out of the 5 judges are uneducated in bhangra.

If you want to talk about results... I believe most of these judges are the same from last year, and from what I remember, we all came to know Vic after the placing of Burgh. Also the list of competitions these judges have judged at are: burgh, bruin, bob, blowout, south beach, etc... from my memory almost all of these competitions had judging issues with the placing.

By no means am I hating on Burgh, I am really glad to see them post the judges, just giving my opinion on them. I believe it will be a strong competition and show but will have to agree with Vic and say I don't see them as qualified judges of bhangra.

ps. shouldn't you pay the prize money from the previous year before even thinking about having another competition?

BHANGRA IN THE BURGH 2008 JUDGING RUBRIC

To all dancers of the Bhangra community,

The Bhangra in the Burgh 2008 Exec Board is proud to give you the latest updates on one of the most anticipated competitions fall. I'm sure you have all taken a glimpse of our chosen judges profiles for this year's event. We are certain that all five judges are very qualified and have a lot of dancing and judging experience. Each of their styles and backgrounds is indeed very different, which will contribute to an even more exciting competition and possibly an unpredictable outcome.

We are also confident that these five judges paired with our well worked judging rubric will be able to eliminate any outside influences and to further enhance the already purely competitive atmosphere. This rubric is available under our new Events tab at our website: www.bhangraintheburgh.com. Be sure to also check out the updated Registration page, filled with details about the packet and the thrilling weekend ahead.

With regards to prize money allocation, due to extenuating circumstances with some of the teams situations, some of the prize money was not able to be awarded as quickly as we had liked. However, we are in constant communication with the team captains who are fully aware of this issue. Thank you for your concerns.

Please feel free to contact us directly at info@bhangraintheburgh.com for any comments, suggestions and questions about any of your concerns regarding the competition.

Thanks,

the Bhangra in the Burgh 2008 Executive Committee

Vic, you're doing a pretty good job of making sure that your team is not invited this year...

FIRST AND FOREMOST....i have nothing to do with the organization of this competition...that being said...being an alumni from the university of pittsburgh and someone that has waited for quite some time for a bhangra competition in pittsburgh... obviously im going to defend the competition....

Vic...i think ur team is fantastic...i've already come out and said this on this forum multiple times..ur mix, execution, dancers....everything is amazing....theres no question of that...i know that there were issues with the judging this past year...but the BIB committee has been nothing but forthright with everything that has been brought up on this forum...and for that...they should be given considerable credit...most competitions when there is judging issues refuse to respond appropriately...qualified or unqualified...the BIB executive committee has proven to be responsive and not oblivious to problems of the past...as a competition only in its second year...I think they deserve credit...established competitons as mentioned previously (bruin, bb)..have been very shady with responding...they have held "hyped competitions" but don't enjoy feedback....

I've never judged a competition...but its much easier SAID than DONE....also...for someone to say that these same judges have been involved in controversy is ridiculous....each competition has their own combination of judges...what are you trying to say?... these judges are constantly involved in controversy?...one cannot associate these judges with controversy unless it was the exact same combo of judges in other competitions...please remember that each judge has their own rubric and can judge as they see fit...

Bhangra in the Burgh...a competition that is so young is learning via feedback...there will always, always, always be differences in opinion as to who should have won...just look at the history of POL which for the majority of "competition reviews" have been people stating what they thought the placings "should be"..and what they actually ended up being...

As for the prize money issue...to that I have no response...but lets be real...this isn't the first time this has happened....in Zee TV's last year...prize money was held off for a considerably long time until finally legal action was taken and this was a competition which had been held for multiple years...In my opinion, BIB is not hiding anything and has responded to all issues....thats MUCH MUCH more that can be said for other competitions...Competitions are EXERCISES in trial and error...those competitions that have had the most experience (Boston, Bruin, etc...) have all been riddled with problems in their initial stages...BIB needs to be given credit for their response to each situation and by responding to feedback are CONSTANTLY improving their clout as a legitimate, major bhangra competition.

Jeeti my friend, I understand where your coming from. If you read earlier in the thread, I have stated that th BIB comittee did a fantastic job running this competition, and we would love to return. But seeing that the same judges will be returning, has turned us away. Everyone knows the issue with us and the judges from last year and I am stating my opinion. It's how I see it. If you were in the meeting I had with the judges you would be shocked lol. But what's done is done. Sorry if my opinion offended you or anyone else.

established competitions as mentioned previously (bruin, bb)..have been very shady with responding...they have held "hyped competitions" but don't enjoy feedback....

I am not sure about Bruin, but as far a Boston goes bro, Boston bhangra does take feedback and we do evaluation it..in fact thats why we released the qualification this year becuase people had a problem with not knowing anything about the judges....We held the names back because of a team threating the judges from previous years....Boston bhangra has never been shady with responding...we respond the teams with any questions or concerns even after our competition, which people on POL or BTF don't see...on top of that as a organization we refuse to answer questions by randomly made accounts on POL attacking our competition or judges when they themselves have never competed at our compeition or even been to it...I don't think we are a "hyped compeition," I think like every other compeition we to have a lot to work on, we always stride to bring new things to the bhangra scene and always look to improve our competition. I am not sure every competition says that but we actually stride for it...

Jeeti you need to take off the Burgh shades and stop drinking the cool aid the BIB commiteee is giving you, if a competition has flaws, they will be stated. Just because other competitions made mistakes in giving teams their money, doesnt make it OK for Burgh to do it as well. You dont defend a commitee by stating flaws of other commitees.. From what I've heard on here, most people actually have a lot of respect for the BIB committee, so please, calm down and drink some budweiser or something...

I wrote that post at 5 am...in pittsburgh for perhaps one of my last times for awhile...so please excuse the unusual enthusiasm and raging loyalty of the post hahhaa...it could have probably been said much simpler...but whatever the case...I stand by what I said earlier..Abhi I probably shouldn't have used Boston as an example...and No Vick...im not drinking any kool aid, but I will take you up on that budweiser...Vic..I didn't mean to offend you either..I'm sure your concerns with the judges are being heard and the prize money issue will be figured out as well. Let me say again that I have nothing to do with the organization, but those of you who have ever met someone from pittsburgh or someone thats lived in pittsburgh for awhile...we are enthusiastically loyal.

While BTF does not attack people/judges/competitions/teams, each person is entitled to their opinion provided it is expressed in a respectful manner. I'm just merely stating this because I hope this doesn't become a personal flame war over BITB.

From what I heard from friends, BITB was a well-run competition. Their desire to improve themselves through critique is one of their strengths. I would agree that they have a lot of potential and will be/are a succesful competition.

I agree with Jeeti that judging is harder than it seems, but since each judge only holds 1/5 of the outcome in his/her hands, bias can only be seen if the combination is maintained for each competition. I agree with you here Jeeti.

However, as pointed out, teams go to competitions 1) to do well and 2) to get money. Even if you're a charitable organization, that money should FIRST (I hate to say this) gone to the teams. While you may state that the charity needs the money more than a team, you can also state that the WoW subscription I just paid for should also have gone to charity over my entertainment. I'm glad Vic brought this up as this is important information, even though I am sure BITB commitee will never let this happen again. I can only see BITB improve in this regard.

I have to ask. Is being new an excuse to have flaws? I got the reward check 30 minutes after they announced it at Desi Hungama, which was unfortunately, a poorly run competition. Is this better placing at a very well-run competition, but taking months to be paid? I am in no way attacking BITB because I am sure you guys will correct this and improve from it, but I am simply curious.

There will be no flame war over BITB hahaha...the discussions been civilized...its all love here. Also...let me apologize for using Boston as an example...Boston has always been an excellent run competition that barely has any problems year in and year out...I'm not quite sure why I even mentioned them...

haha Jeeti no sweat bro

i donno Kinnell, i mean competitions usually pay up the money right away to get it out of the way...and I have herd of competitions that it takes them a little longer like a month or so...but i have never herd of a team waiting a year, but who knows BITB could have had their hands tight or something could have happened...running a compeition can be hard the first year, your are bound to make mistakes, thats how you learn and thats how you figure out what works and what doesn't...like i always say...everyone makes mistakes its what you do after or how you resolve the mistakes that matter.. Best of luck to BITB!

PCS which is on the same day offers you 500 in travel expenses and pays for your hotel i believe. and its in chicago(much better city in my opinion), it might not be as large scale as bhangra in the burgh but its a legit comp with qualified judges, as a team id rather just go there insted of dealing with these judgin issues

I'm just curious and in no way saying which competition is better, but what does PCS stand for?

And Abhi, I have a suggestion/critique for Boston Bhangra Competition, which I hope you take seriously, as a member of the BBC committee. Last year, Kinnell Shah did not get free shots at the after party. I hope that this year, that mistake does not happen again. ;)
