Boston Bhangra Competition: Team Hype Award Voting

To All:

This year, we are integrating a team "hype" award. Please go to our website and click on Vote (left side of the page), register, and vote for the team you think will win. The team that gets the most votes will get the Hype award on the day of the competition. We will announce that the team has won the award and give them a plaque mentioning their popularity across the Globe. This is simply a way to get more of the community involved in a formal poll through our website and our partners. This poll will stay up until a few days prior to the competition. Get all your friends to vote!

We will have a similar poll after the competition is over for the "People's Champion" based on most votes after the competition. The winner of that award will actually get a prize, based on what we can give. This poll will only be available for about 1 week after the competition.

We hope you all vote: www.bostonbhangra.com/bbc

Thanks,

Wow BBC. We have to register for DesiSphere in order to vote. It may be free, but regardless that's 3 minutes of work I do not want to do and 3 minutes of work that most will not do. Essentially, instead of getting a poll where the maximum number of people can vote, you get a poll where teams will try to get people to sign-up for DesiSphere and vote for them so that they can win. I honestly doubt people with no "associations" with teams will register just to get their opinion voiced.

I hope you guys (BBC) got mad sponsorship money from DesiSphere.

Registering for a site to vote for your favorite team REALLY isn't a big deal. If it is a big deal to you, so be it, don't vote. However, if you would like to support a team, we do ask that people vote. Just like people have to register to be part of BTF, or most other forums/sites, we're asking the same for Desisphere. They are a growing company, and we would like to help support them. We certainly don't see a problem there. And registering for that site is very easy by the way. It wouldn't take anybody more than 2 minutes to do so. However, if 2 minutes of your time is too much, then that is your perogative.
Thanks,

I'm really looking forward to Boston Bhangra, last year was a strong line up too but come on now, that was slightly unprofessional. From a respected organization like Boston Bhangra, I wouldn't expect such frank comments. "If it is a big deal to you, so be it, don't vote" - it would have been better if they hadn't said anything at all.

The awards will be:

1st, 2nd and 3rd, along with a hype award and a people's champ award. Hype award is based on the votes submitted, as is the people's champ award which will be awarded after the competition.

As for the voting, we do welcome everyone to vote. We created this new feature this year as we thought it would be something new and refreshing, where the voting actually impacts the teams that are performing. We hope everyone does choose to vote!

Sincerely,
Boston Bhangra, Inc

yes those are the winnings

expect People's Champ will be announced after the competition, after people who have gone to the competition or some how seen the video have voted. Its kind of a way to see who the bhangra community thinks should have won after seeing all the teams perform. With that being said Kinnell, good point and we have thought of that, but hopefully it won't get out of control, we also know that people who haven't been to the competition or seen the video will blindly vote for teams they are close to or like....We are tiring something new and lets see how it goes. Also one of the many reasons we picked DesiSphere is because they have a good and effective poll set up that they went out of their way to build for us. It will help use track IPs and and make charts of data for analyzing.

We know not everyone agrees with Judging now a days this is a way to voice your opinion. Again this is a new idea we are testing, any feedback would be wonderful. Depending how successful the pole goes it can help us with our judging and who knows what else.....

dearest apologies to anyone if Boston Bhangra came off unprofessional of defensive. The poll is something we are excited about testing!

its through DesiSphere, and having it through something that requires you singing up will cut down the chances of people voting over and over or spamming the poll..its more secure..anyone can mess around with their cookies and keep voting.

I would suggest BTF ;) but truth be told, I don't want a mailing list of 2000 junk members who will never return (BTF is a niche market). Something marketed to the general desi audience, like DesiSphere, makes a lot more sense and has value to them (read: "worth it to pay for these names"). There are other ways to ensure unique users (require email, OpenID, add to BostonBhangra mailing list) but DesiSphere was chosen. It's really fine, BBC makes some money out of it and every competition needs to defray costs/make money. But I wouldn't say it's a convenience or the most user-friendly thing.

I would like to emphasize that in no way shape or form was I attacking BBC, but critiquing the method in which the poll will be taken.

A lot of free services online offer polls without registration and these polls can be embedded on the website. Heck, even my domain offers a poll service that gives statistics and IP blocks after a vote. Personally, I'd prefer not to give out my email for every random thing I have to sign-up with. But that's my personal opinion and the hassle of signing up will force me not to vote. But no loss.

The Hype award seems to be of little consequence - so it doesn't matter if no one votes or one person spams it. For the Post-Competition award, you could have placed a poll on the back of the tickets (everyone needs a ticket to get in) and have boxes where they could have dropped it at the venue. That way you could have people who watched the show actually judge. Those who vote before watching the show were going to vote for that team anyways. The hassle in checking off a team and putting it in a box as you leave is in my opinion, less of a hassle than going online, signing up to DesiSphere and then voting. Just a thought. Feel free to bash it.

We do hope that people choose to vote. Again, it's just a way to spread the word about Desisphere.com, and also help us get poll results for teams that people like, before and after the competition. We unfortunately can't do anything with tickets, as the tickets are generated through ticketmaster.com. Thus, we have almost no flexibility. The poll has to be done online, and like I said, this partnership helps us promote desisphere, and get the feedback from Bhangra/non-Bhangra users worldwide.
We are excited about this new feature that actually impacts the competition, and if you like a team, we would urge you to vote!
Also, as for the "self-hype" mechanism, this is a poll, it doesn't really matter! If you want to hype yourself, go for it as nobody will know! We just want to do something new. You have the opportunity to vote for the team you like the most, and if that is your team, then VOTE! ;D
