Boston Bhangra's goals and reporting

I reviewed Boston Bhangra Competition's Sponsorship package, and it mentions a few times that Boston Bhangra is a 501(c)(3) non-profit org, which is great. But reviewing the packet, bostonbhangra.com, as well as bostonbhangra.com/bbc I don't see much information at all about the goals and ongoing actions that BBC puts this money towards. I saw a mentorship program and a (fee-based) dance class. Again, does BBC then donate these proceeds to charity?

Does Boston Bhangra publish an annual report showing revenue and how much goes towards the charity's goals versus administrative costs? I don't ask this in a malicious way at all-- it's just any non-profit that one supports, one should understand where the money is going. Thanks!

you've learned too much in your classes. not only that, why are you reading a sponsorship package?

lol I'm no IRS auditor, I am just curious and am proud that Boston Bhangra has become such a continued success in the Boston area for the last 7 years, and want to know the true difference that a Bhangra competition is making in the country and community.

What's the point of learning if you don't apply your acquired knowledge? And as Waleed pointed out, competitions need to become accountable for their actions and accountable for what they say/claim they're going to do. More so after the Anil Prasad incident.

We have no problem being accountable for what we present. Our records and tax numbers are all public information that you can find through the MA tax websites.
As for where the money goes, we use the money to keep the on-going growth of our organization and putting together more events and organizations. Maintaining a Bhangra team costs money, as does practicing, as do all costs with running events. The primary premise of Boston Bhangra is to promote cultural awareness and mentorship for children. We have helped to ignite Bhangra and South Asian culture within New England. We have increased cultural awareness and demand for south asian culture within the areas by having our shows, performances and classes. That is the goal of our organization. We ourselves are the non-profit and we don't give money out to other "charities" as you deem it. We are the charity and to self sustain what we're doing, we need to make money to keep the organization running.
Also, everybody thinks Boston Bhangra makes SO much money from our competition. However, one thing people always seem to forget is the amount of effort and money that we put down to run the competition. Our venues themselves cost more than $40000, along with artists, team costs, and logistical things we need to do to run the competition. Adding everything up, our costs are close to $80000. We make this public information to our e-board and everybody understands how much we make. We don't run BBC to make money. In fact, NOBODY in our organization makes any money. We are ALL volunteers. Thus, the money all goes back into the organization to keep it growing. Normally from BBC we make anwhere from about $2k - $5k in profit. That doesn't sound like much after everything is said and done, but if you're behind the scenes and understand what our costs are, then you will trully understand that we're not making money.
Accountability is something very easily asked for Saleem. We take great pride in what we have been and continue to do in Boston. If it weren't for us, Bhangra in Boston would most likely be dead, and there would be no indepedent teams that were created in Boston as all of them have sprouted from Boston Bhangra. It takes alot of work and effort to make what we've made in Boston. We've been doing it in Boston for 10 years, and we're proud to say we're probably the ONLY non-profit Bhangra organization in North America. There are a handful of organizations as committed to this as we are. We're glad to see Bhangra Teams Forum is among the few. This is part of the reason we have helped support you in the past as well.
Also, if you want to learn more about our organization, you should view our actual website: www.bostonbhangra.com. A sponsorship packet is not going to tell you what we're doing as an organization. At least look in the correct place for the accountability aspect!
Thanks,
Rohit

Sounds like a nice way of saying you guys keep the money =PP just dragged out

also not to be abrasive or obnoxious ... just commenting ....
"Normally from BBC we make anwhere from about $2k - $5k in profit."
...
"and we're proud to say we're probably the ONLY non-profit Bhangra organization in North America."

sounds contradictory =O

you clearly don't understand the structure or concept of a non-profit organization...
A nonprofit organization (abbreviated NPO, also not-for-profit) is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals. ...

Rohit, the tone of your post was unnecessarily combative, self-aggrandizing, and didn't answer saleem's question directly (in the way it read to me anyway)

Go back and read Saleem's post. He's not holding you 'accountable', as much as he's curious. He went to website and found little info. Google search brings up an interview with you in 2004 when you first filed for non-profit status. It's not easy to find this stuff

Comments on how Boston scene would be dead without you were totally unnecessary in context of our discussion (regardless of the validity). Simply saying that the money is used to support Bhangra in the Boston area for many years would have sufficed

Here's the state's page for bbc. No financial data, just the annual reports. Too lazy to look up tax returns, I leave that to someone else

woah haha everyone just calm down. Looks like Boston Bhangra is using their funding to sustain their organization and make BB better ever year, while also maintaining some side projects like teaching classes and promoting cultural awareness etc. It would be nice if there was some more detail about the side projects, but I think the organization has and does improve every year. Plus now they are expanding to run and operate other great shows, so I think its all good...good that BB is doing all this, and I'm sure there are tons of other organizations as well that are doing great things as well!

These are the things that we've been doing with our funding:
1) Boston Bhangra Competition
2) Maintain the organization and costs related to owning a corporation
3) Teach Bhangra classes weekly
4) Have a juniors Bhangra team and costs to maintain the team
5) Have a mentorship program for children
6) Have a seniors Bhangra team and costs to maintain the team

We've also started our parent organization, focused on all South Asian culture, rather than just Bhangra, specifically in Boston:
1) South Asian Showdown Competition
2) Tried teaching Bollywood classes - plan to try again in future
3) Tried teaching classical classes - plan to try again in future
4) Have a seniors bollywood team and costs to maintain the team

We're also constantly working on other initiatives that can help us expand the organization and continue to make us grow. You can only grow with money, good people and good ideas. That is what we're always striving to do. This includes alliances, new projects, and expanding upon existing projects.

That should be a pretty good summation of the things we do. This way everything is on the table. We have nothing to hide.

I hope that helps.

I would just like to state that VIBC is also a non-profit Bhangra organization.

No problem Saleem.

As for VIBC, like I mentioned in my e-mail, PROBABLY. I'm not sure how many total non-profits there are, but there are probably a handful. Again, anybody promoting Punjabi culture/South Asian culture should be applauded as that is what keeps our rich culture on-going, from teams, to competitions, to culture shows, to dance to anything else. These are obviously more of the entertainment aspects that I'm mentioning, but there are many others that are doing other things to keep our culture strong. That is the end goal, and as long as they are true to their commitment, keep up the FIGHT! :)

I believe AVAP was a non-prof as well, and the proceeds went to cancer research or something of the like. More comps like that would be great

Burgh proceeds go to homeless children's fund, BdM was for Lima charities, and many comps donate to Punjabi/South Asian orgs etc. It's the norm to use comps to support others, not the exception to be honest
