Choreographer in the UK?

Hi everyone,

My name is Florence, I live in Paris (France) and I love Bhangra. Unfortunately, France is a kind of desert for bhangra.. There are something like 4 teams in the country, usually only guys, and they dance bhangra as they did in Punjab... So there are no mixed teams, no formations (I call it "static bhangra"), no competition, nothing like in the US!
I'm in a Bollywood and other indian dances group in Paris. We learned bhangra with a punjabi guy who had arrived from india a few years ago. Now, he cannot teach us anymore, so we would like to hire a choreographer that would come for a workshop to teach our group, especially how to do formations.
I thought of the UK, because it's less exepensive to pay a trip UK-France than US-France, and what I saw when I studied in London was already really impressive. I know bhangra in the UK is not yet like bhangra in the US, but believe me, it's wonderful compared to France.
I would love to be the first importer of anglo-saxon bhangra in France! So if you know good choreographers from the UK, please tell me!

Thanks :D

Hi Florence!

This site is a great resource and I hope you find everything you need.

To be honest, I would suggest looking at videos and reaching out to the teams whose choreography you like. Then if they give permission, you can just practice using their choreography. If you're just starting out, I dunno that paying to have someone fly out just to teach formations is worth it. Formations come naturally through movement, it's actual form and choreography that need lessons!

For someone in uk, contact username: Faysal he's an awesome guy and very in tune with NA bhangra so he'll be a great contact

Also,

there are lots of great clips on steps to help you practice

+1. Faysal is a great resource out in UK. You can PM him on BTF and get his contact info: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/index.php?action=profile;u=370

He started a traditional team in York, UK area called "YorkSher Panjab De." He knows a lot about the NA bhangra circuit and is a great resource for someone new to the dance form.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone directly in France, otherwise that would probably be the most cost effective for you.

Edit: There a few people on BTF from the team "Gabru Chel Chabileh" in the UK as well (you can PM them individually): http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/post-mixes-and-video-links/gcc-performance-uk-bhangra-team/

Thanks for all your answers! I'll definitely contact them.

And Swi, of course we also want to learn moves and choreographies, we still have a lot to learn.
Our group functions in a way that might be strange for a lot of people... We try to invite a lot of foreign choreographers to teach us what we can't find in France in order to improve what we know, then we use the choreographies taught for our shows. As there are no competitions here, we just dance for fun and sometimes in weddings or charities so we don't need to have our own "in house" choreographer, we prefer to explore different styles. We have invited bollywood and rajasthani choreographers from india, we also went to punjab in april and to London in june. But now I really want to do some bhangra!
