Honestly speaking, in my opinion teams should be called out when their behaviour warrants it. It'll help future competition organizers weed out teams that can't control themselves, and hopefully serve notice to other teams to be mindful of their behaviour.
While I generally agree, in this case MCB didn't come forward on their own. It took a passing comment to elicit a very detailed paragraph. Even a simple 'Your team cost more damages than the prize money awarded, so we spoke to the captains to inform them that no monetary award would be given'would have sufficed.

Just seemed overly petty to go into detail in these circumstances, but you're absolutely right that if comps don't do this more teams just get away with it. Throwing a comp is hard, $950 is an absurd amount of damage, and if that team kept sniping at me about money I'd be pissed too...

Hello Swi,
I don't think I know you personally but have heard a lot of good things about you but just wanted to let wanted to let you know a few things-:
1. it didn't take a small comment for me to reply back in a detailed paragraph... its just that I didn't wanted to get into a backa nd forth word fight with someone that doesn't even know how to respect Bhangra..apparently they say they dance for culture.. but I am not sure which part of that tells you to come to a comp and Trash the rooms..break so many things and cause damages of more than what I owe them and still expects me to pay them. So I had to let everyone know and get it off once in for all.
But What I didn't get was (dont take it the wrong way) that you are the moderator of the Btf and I think its great! but after reading what I posted you said I should have just said that they trashed the rooms and thats why I didnt pay them but would that really tell everyone else on the BTF that how this Team is? I mean we never stay behind talking about how Good or Bad a comp was but there should be a time where we should comp up and say how good or bad the specific teams behavior so that the comps in future should think twice before accepting these teams that do not respect Bhangra. Again do not take it the wrong way but just wanted to put this out because I think you are doing a great job to the Bhangra community being the Moderator of the BTF but just some things that I thing you should look at.

I apologize if you think I said something wrong.

The "Room Trashing" is being handled. We requested a receipt before and were not given one. Nav is just having a little fun, something that a lot of people in this forum love to do. This discussion is over, we are handling it directly with the committee.
Ahhh, now I get it....calling someone a 40 year old money hungry whore is fun and not doing bhangra for the CULTURE is badddddddddd.

Now a more serious question comes up...for other competitions, how often are they put through the same situation? How often do they deal with disrespectful teams who damage rooms, bad mouth EVERYTHING about the organizers, and well...just don't do bhangra for the culture?! I mean, WHO DOESN'T DO BHANGRA FOR THE CULTURE?! oh wait...most teams.
Thank You Jasmeet for all your helpful comments. I am glad that there is someone else that shares the same mentality and have the same passion towards Bhangra that I do.I respect it!!

Thank You Again
Gary Singh

Gary I don't want to get into it here, but I'll just say that context means a lot. You didn't post about it in a thread and it's been months since the competition so I think it came off petty, but that's just me personally. That doesn't mean your action is wrong, doesn't mean your post is wrong, doesn't mean I don't support your transparency...simply means I think you overexposed the competition and would have been better off with a simple comment and handling things privately.

If you have any other questions pm or email me we can talk more

Sometimes i really shake my head at some of these competition organizers. I'm getting tired of hearing about hotel damages, rowdy teams etc.

This is very simple
1. All teams must put down their OWN credit card for their OWN rooms. (in case of damages it will be charged otherwise it wont)
2. You tell the hotel if the team is to rowdy or loud you are free to throw them out (They arn't children if they get thrown out it will be up to them to figure out where to go)

If we can run an event with 30 dancers on each team (10 teams) and pay for minimal damages i'm sure you guys can put your heads together and figure out a way to provide an environment that is safe and will not reflect poorly on anyone afterwards or leave you footing the bill.

1. Can we stop w the "respecting punjabi culture" bs at this point? Its an empty sentiment that is used as nothing more than a lever to gain sympathy, Which is the biggest disrespect of all.

2. If a team thinks it can cause damage to a room and still get paid, it's delusional.

3. I fully support naming teams and specifying their infractions, it really helps other organizers weed out teams that lack maturity.

4. Respecting culture starts with the 200 plus dancers at a competition, not with
The 2 dozen committee members.

MCB committee did pay DCMPAA their prize money. They contacted us right away and told us that there would be a delay in prize money due to pending charges for the damage at the hotel. I think they handled this very well and I hope that the MCB does not get discouraged by the events that took place at the hotel and still continue to promote Punjabi culture in the Motor City. Again keep up the great work Garry!

Swi, I do remember MCB posting about the incident before right after the competition and indicated that a few teams were responsible for damages. However, he, at that point, even after some people asked teams to be named, declined to reveal the teams responsible for damages and kept the matter private.

He got called out on it on this thread by a team and it could have very well damaged his image and the image of his competition. He clarified the situation before. He didn't overexpose the events because once he got called out, he had every right to defend his reputation. Attempting to handle things privately would have made him look shady and made him look like trying to hide the facts/giving excuses/hushing the team up and honestly, gauging from NYPD's online reaction, I doubt they would have come out and taken back their statement even after private messages were exchanged, and thus, adding MLIB to the ranks of disreputable competitions like All-Stars, MLIB..etc in the minds of teams and the circuit. It was in his best interest to come forward after being called out in that manner.

Here is his original post.

As far as the damages are concerned a couple of teams really stood out than the others when it came to creating problems and damaging Hotel property so we will be taking strict actions towards them. I do not want to name any teams but I want to let you know that you know who you are and if you are a placing team at my competition the money that the Hotel will charge us for all these damages will be deducted out of your prize money.

Good sleuthing. POINT CONCEDED.

Gary, like I said I had no issue with your content per se, but rather the context and it seems like I didn't have the whole context myself, so I apologize and we're definitely on the same page.

Especially since this was in January (and unless there was conflicting info privately), it's weird that prize money would still be an issue for some team members

thanks for being transparent though Gary, any comp organizer willing to spend time to reply deserves support and feedback. I hope you're able to throw another MCB!

Also Ak_Di_Nishani, you're right that comps can limit their financial liability, but their operations and reputation still take a hit. We expect comps to provide practice rooms, group rates, reasonable location. Poor team behavior can prevent comps from operating at hotels in the future (I mean come on, if a brown organization is talking to a hotel and a brown group trashes a room, a hotel puts 2 and 2 together). This is generally a bigger issue in smaller/college towns where hotel choices are limited to begin with

So team behavior directly affects and can degrade future competition operations and experience. Comps should still be smart and reduce their own liability, but it's frankly selfish of teams to put organizations in that position. I'm talking about extreme situations, and not necessarily just issues of noise complaints/whatever.

[PublicServiveAnnouncement] While I have your attention, PLEASE tip the housekeeping, I can't believe how many times I see shitty rooms and no is leaving a tip :-\ . [/PublicServiceAnnouncement]

+1. it all comes down to the organizing committee to put a little more thought into liability issues and enforcement. NACS has done a great job of this, and you've elaborated the structure in a post in the past which may have been stickied I believe. Worth a read for all competition organizers
