Confirmed Fall 2010 Competitions?

A competition in NYC is a lot cheaper if you have university backing, or access to university facilities. Part of the reason that it would be awesome if Bhangra in the Heights becomes a full-fledged comp!

The problem with NYC is that it doesn't foster the community feel of a bhangra competition weekend. Hotels are ridiculously expensive, bars/clubs are 21+ unless you have one of those IND-style parties which are awful and attract the worst kinds of people. The things that make a comp weekend so much fun (boli sessions in the lobby, hanging out in the hotel, etc.) just won't be there.

The things that Bhangra in the Heights needs to become a competition are pretty simple for them (judges, awards, etc.) I think the biggest issue would be dealing with out of town teams that need places to stay, and somehow coming up with an afterparty that actually feels like a bhangra after party. I have yet to see one in NYC. But CU is for sure in the best position to go through with this, and you know you guys have us alums to help you out Raj make it happen!

Also I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually think Jersey is MUCH better suited for a competition. It has the advantageous location like NYC that pretty much guarantees a sick lineup, bringing teams from NYC, upstate NY, Boston, DC, Philly, etc. But there are so many venue, hotel, and party options that will keep it a truly bhangra weekend. I think there's only been one Jersey comp, The Bhangra Project in 2006, and from what I heard it was a success.

Jersey is....well, Jersey. It's not like a "fun place" to have a competition really. More feasible yes - but then you might as well do it in Queens or something (but that defeats the purpose of a fun one in Manhattan...).

If people can find a really good deal at a hotel it would be really fun...there must be some desis who own hotels in the city!! But - I would think that noise violations and rowdiness would be less tolerated than other places...

Although it may not be as feasible in a competition setting, but Bhangra Heights opens up the actual auditorium floor for one amazing dance party right after the show.

i think IND threw a bhangra/fusion comp in tribeca a few years ago...dont remember the name, but i guess it didnt work out for them

NYC definitely would take a way from that "Bhangra"-esque feeling that sub-urban and i definitely agree.....mixing fraternities/sororities with Bhangra competitions can be a little bit complex of a topic because it totally depends on how its done

for example I know that Bayside Bhangra was run by FDA, which i thought was a great idea, because many FDA members are members of Delta Epsilon Psi a S. Asian fraternity, however, not ALL of FDA consisted of DEPsi brothers, and Bayside Bhangra was not treated as a "national convention" for DEPsi, but more like an official FDA event....

But I have been to other events run by other fraternities ie. IND, Sig. Rho, Beta Chi Theta, that have turned the competition and afterparties into a way to showcase their brotherhood and utilize the exposure for their upcoming Rush

I guess it depends on how its done/run

Hey guys,

hahaha I had no idea my B-Heights comment would become so relevant to this topic. We really appreciate all the support for the event, but with all due respect to everyone's opinions, I hate to be the bearer of bad news...

This is not set in stone, but as of now, our circumstances don't allow us turn B-Heights into a competition. This is for a number of reasons:

- I have to respectfully disagree that transitioning from a showcase into a competition requires a lot more than just money and judges. From an organizational perspective, there's a LOT more to deal with, including the RIDICULOUSNESS of our university's event management bureaucracy. Therefore, with the case of Columbia, having the University "backing" (if such a thing existed) would be a lot more difficult for us and have great consequences on our team should anything averse occur.

- Though this can be solved, the issue of manpower (and manpower with dedication) is an issue on such a small campus. Mind you, we're still a competitive team and full-time students.

- Having been involved with B-Heights since its inception, I can tell you that the event was created with a specific mission to be something different and bring both our campus community and the bhangra community under one roof to share a variety of bhangra styles. Hopefully we've fulfilled that mission in the past three years, and I'd expect we would continue to do so.

- To be honest, if we're going to throw a comp, we'd want to make sure it's good and worth all the effort. At the moment, we don't have the resources to do so and hence, it'd be unfair to the teams (and all others involved) to throw a half-ass competition.

Believe me you when I say we've definitely thought about making B-Heights into a competition, and we're sorry if this was not the response people were looking for. Who knows, maybe things will change a few years down the line? In any case, we're still really pumped about B-Heights and hope to get your continuing support!!!

Yea, I agree with Rajkaran - I don't think Bhangra in the Heights should be a competition, keep it the way it is, it's more fun that way!

But - I do think there should be a legit competition in New York (I don't consider Bhangra Royale, GCB, Manhattan Bhangra, etc. "legit").

Hotels in queens cost about 100 a night commonly, even very close to the city.
There are tons of CHEAP venues in queens.
More community in queens.


hold it in queens, manhattan competitions are totally too expensive.


The hindu center in flushing queens has a decent stage, and it costs like 2,000 to rent...throwing a competition for under 10,000 is very do-able, it's just about doing it!

just asking, is a club really mandatory for an afterparty? why not just use a hotel hall and make it an all bhangra party, much better than random guys walking around looking for ass and sluts going wild.

i agree with faizan about queens being cheaper and we should def throw some more east coast compsss up in the ny/nj area.

What Happen to PCS in Chicago? its usually in october, but i know it was canceled last year.. any word on that?
