Hey everyone,

We're excited to share our video from last night with all of you. This performance has been in the making for years and it was truly an honor to perform it with my wonderful teammates. Special recognition for our seniors for whom this was their last competition: Sunanda and Sharmila.

Enjoy!

Props to Abhik Saha for the amazing recording. Performance starts at 1:23.

Man, all the respect the in the world to you guys for going out and doing your set, your way. There's some risks taken here, and some creativity, and a lot of passion and excitement. I can see why this was a crowd favorite.

My main critique for you guys is that the choreography was very, very standard. And formations were not very prevalent in the first half of the routine, and still very simple in the second half. Plus points were cleanliness and energy. Just ripped this performance, but the set itself I think could have been better

Just some thoughts as I watch this:
  • the farhan khan epic instrumental was well done, very impactful.
  • Light up saaps, probably best-made light up saaps i've seen. Awesome start to the section in darkness. But you just turn them on and then move into a circle!! Why not do more? Because frankly once the lights come on the saap section is very average. Do more than just lean, why not some actual steps, even if just in place.
  • Saaps are well executed, nice and clean but very standard. No unique moves that really leave an impression, good chunk of time spent in lines (either lines of 3 or horizontal staggered lines or a V).
  • Nice intro with breaking daangs off, but then you're left with very thin daangs, which kinda looked amateurish (and lot's of teams do it I know, andthey all look the same way to me) I would recommend atleast ramaals on them in the future to give it that extra flair.
  • great lalkaars, I could hear them on video which is impressive, energy is great
  • Jhummar, the whole 'flower' from guy to girl thing has been done so often that this just doesn't hit for me. When all guys teams start doing it with their own joris, I think the effect is just lost for co-ed teams (but that's just personal)
  • Phumania is nice, really clean, lots of movement, it was refreshing given how slow the rest of the set has been movement wise.
  • 7:17 is just a hugeeee let down. There's a ton of build up and the impact of this just is lost. I kind of compare to same song with SCB with the drop into lehria. There's just a more aesthetic value to their movement. I also appreciate the formation moving across stage and the different steps used, side taari etc, but I think if the people who were left behind had just stayed still and gotten low it would have looked better than moving so much and then moving in place, you know? Moving in spot like a march doesn't look good. Not a fan of this segment, but...
  • dubstep, won me over. loved it, perfect highlight for him, everyone else is doing choreo. His reentrance into bhangra was just so clean, like he turned off a switch...so sick, so so sick.
  • Not fan of the execution of some dancers on the ending (hate to call em out, but mostly the girls), but props for not doing a guys-line and girls-line. I like the way it looks with jodis side by side instead of by gender
This is honestly the first Cornell set in past 2-3 years that I've actually enjoyed from beginning to end. Dancers were all clean, something interesting every minute or so, mix was sick! It was a great performance, definitely should be proud.

You guys deserve the same attention and applause of any team that placed, congrats guys!

Haha.. Swi, bro, you critique everything and it doesn't give anyone else a chance to do the same. But I agree on everything that Swi said. All I really want to see is you guys expand and kill that opening shikka segment because it was way too short. You guys could've killed that! Good job overall on the performance!

entertaining performance...props to whoever recorded it(Y)...one thing that takes away from the khunda set is the fact that u guys aren;t using khundey...like swi said..put ramaal on the sticks and/or atleast get thicker sticks! or get real khundey...because it just looks bad!

The energy with which you guys danced was unbelievable. Your vardiyan looked amazing.

Formations could have been more dynamic.

Also 7:53 - the pink guy ripped it. Simply amazing.

great performance! level of dancing, uniformity, and stage presence as a team have all skyrocketed since burgh. props to the leaders/captains for pushing their team to the next level, yet still maintaining that unique cornell style. and the purple guy..holy shit

Loved this performance (even watching it via video - props to whoever captured it so well from far away).

Many of my points coincide a lot with what Swi mentioned, but for reiteration purposes:
  • Do MORE with the light up saaps - they look veryyy cleaannnn; it appears a lot of effort put in made to fabricate them, so why not utilize them for more than the 20 seconds of stage time that they received?
  • Besides the light up portion, saap segments needs more creativity/excitement for the audience.
  • Not a fan of the daangs at all - looked like giant lego sticks.
  • Daang segment was rather short and fundamental - get more creative, especially in these types of competitions that "reward" for it.
  • I enjoyed the guy-girl "Tere Mere" jhummar segment a lot. Great song and well choreographed.
  • I noticed a lot of the formations were very basic and didn't really pull the routine to the "next level."
  • The whole dubstep part starting from around 7:40 onwards was UNREAL (my favorite part of the routine) - a lot of build up with the mix and very well done transition by the pink jori into & out of the it. The sial koti and dhammal by the team in the background not only kept things traditional but also kept the focus on the man in pink pulling off the crazy poppin' & lockin' moves.
  • The ending was a bit on the ordinary side - I wish you guys would have gotten a bit more creative with it - for example: close with the lights off, bring back those light up saaps and use them to come up with a creative formation (spell out "Cornell" or hold them so they form something that looks cool), and make the trademark "air jordan Cornell bhangra dancer" light up with RED leds. That would be badass ;)
Overall great work to you & your entire team Kartik. You guys have came a long ways. Hope it only goes uphill from here!

Good job but... this is all I noticed, every segment had some, all, or at least one of the following: slow down or complete stop, dropping off, picking up, 3, 2, 1 thing where the outside or inside dancers do a move and it sort of does a ripple effect to the rest.... it was a very standard set but it was also very predictable and it made it difficult for me to appreciate if you were clean or not or to enjoy the performance. Guy in pink during his solo, holy moly. That was different n kind of cool. Never seen that type of dance before, you did a great job of jumping back into bhangra mode right after. Good job.

great job cornell! i enjoyed the new and creative things you guys included in your routine! i gotta agree with swi tho, overall the choreo could have use a lil more umph, and you could have gone way more dynamic with the formations. im excited to see what you guys bring next year!

edit: i watched the routine again, and imho there was too much standing around. a lot of times i saw the ideas that you guys were executing, but they were cushioned with a a 10 second standing around period, which to me makes certain parts awkward. ultimately (again, to me) a lot of the "cool" ideas look like things you forced into your routine after you made it. and bounce your shoulders!

After watching Cornells set from blowout I will say I am truly impressed. I remember seeing your performance last year – yall have stepped your game up! However, there are some weaknesses to your performance. You were clean, energetic, and creative. However, the long pauses in the khunda segment tend to make your set look weak. In a judging perspective, some judges might give more points to a team who goes on 8-9 minutes nonstop? A team who has minimal pauses yet, still remains clean and energetic? As a team yall have definitely improved and I can’t wait to see what you bring to the near future.

from my experience, judges do NOT give more points for this.

^true, if anything, pauses between segments get noticed if they're sloppy or look like a break.

^ from my experience, this is also not true. Often judges do not notice teams stopping for 4-8 beats. They also dont reward teams for having longer sets with minimal breaks
