Why do canadian girls sometimes wears guys vardiyaan? I never understood it, esp when they wear chaadrey. Please help.

I always wondered this myself, Ashveer isn't hating on anyone for wearing chaadre he's just asking the reasons behind it, no need to get defensive.

I'm actually more curious about a few things:

1) Why is there such a divide between Canadian and American teams wearing chaadre vs. salwars. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe AVA is the only Canadian girls team to wear salwars and there are no American girls teams wearing chaadre.

2) I've only seen one coed team with females wearing chaadre (PANJ), the other Canadian coed teams I've seen have females wearing salwars. But Canadian all-girls teams wear chaadres. Why the difference between coed vs. all-girls?

3) Bhangra is a traditionally male dance so there's no precedent for female vardiyaan, but for at least the first decade of North American bhangra, all girls performing bhangra wore salwars (except for VIBE and UBC Girls off the top of my head). Is that just because women wear salwars as a traditional Punjabi dress so that was applied to bhangra?

1. As a general statement, yeah Canadian girls tend to wear chaadre while American tend to wear salwar. Idk why. I think it's just different tastes. But exceptions always exist: AVA (canadian) wore chadray to their first major comp TBYF but have chosen salwar at every comp since then. ASD (american) wore chadray to Fusion last year and will continue to wear them

2. Canadian co-ed teams PANJ, NJ, YPA, TAG (co-ed gigs), all have girls in chadar. I know I am missing more teams like Punjabi Beat and Kohinoor that did co-ed sets in the past with girls in chadar. i think duniya all-stars too? sometimes? aah I know i've seen more

3. I think it's all just personal preference. Same as guys choosing to wear those belts over their kurtey or not... just depends what you like as a team

Ah didn't know about AVA and you're right about ASD, are you guys the only American team to have worn chaadre? I wonder if the chaadre vs. salwar thing is an academy vs. no-academy thing? So if a girls team is affiliated with a guys team they're more likely to wear chaadre? I'm just speculating, it's interesting.

Definitely true, there's no right or wrong way. I was actually just curious as to why girls started wearing salwars at all! There's really no precedent for it, since guys obviously wear chaadre when they do bhangra. So why didn't everyone just start out wearing chaadre?



Also another question for everyone - are there any competitive benefits to wearing salwars vs. chaadres for girls? Personally I actually think it depends on the style. Traditional girls teams look better in chaadre because they're fully embracing the male style. But then I think sometimes chaadre can take away from complicated footwork for more modern teams (though salwars can too if they're too baggy).

As far as I've noticed, I don't think wearing chaadres give girls any competitive benefits. I haven't seen anything about this in any judging rubric. I think at the end the end of the day it's just important to look clean in whatever you are wearing. We always safety pin the bottom of our salwars to avoid them getting in the way of our feet!

I think the AEG gimmick was executed tastefully. I've thought about this a bit more, and I think that women wearing men's clothes (as a norm, like AED/SMD performance rather than as a gimmick AEG Boston) ends up also circumventing whatever feminism or equality we could hope to have emerge out of bhangra. Women dressing up like men (but not totally, since we don't accept them all wearing paggan) seems to me to indicate that we want our women to be able to be exactly like men. I think there's some value to that, but it also doesn't let us take a step further to consider things like: how can women do bhangra in their own right that isn't just trying to be masculine, and also isn't trying to be oh-so-cute. We don't see men trying to wear chunnis and I'm not advocating that either, but I think women trying to fit into the cookie cutter than men forge has its limits. With that tangential thought I've been wanting to get off my chest since watching the performance, I tip my pagh to AEG for their performance, and Navi Sandhu. I wonder how many girls in 10 years are gonna say "I started doing bhangra because of that Navi Sandhu girl's performance at Boston."
