Yea it was obvious from the mixer that this committee had no idea what they were doing. They didn't even have enough chairs for everyone. I don't even want to imagine what the out of state teams went through dealing with them. If the committee members are reading this, talk to someone who has competed when you try planning out your competition, for example, there is no need for a 10am "check-in" for all the teams! Especially if we are just going to sign a paper and go back to the hotel!

As for the judging, the score sheets that Kanvar sent us don't make any sense. One of the criteria was "Art and Representation of Culture," but we apparently we got points taken off for doing giddha during our ending. Is giddha not part of Punjabi culture? And I don't want to comment on any teams, but I'm pretty sure the lakers beating boston has nothing to do with our culture. We also heard we had points taken off for being in the auditorium during intermission, nobody ever told us about this rule. And why did the doormen let us in if we weren't supposed to be inside? And what genius thought it would be a good idea to have a white lady as a judge? How can she possibly know about authenticity, creativity, style, or even music (all listed as judging criteria). One of the judges gave Texas a 99 (again, according to what Kanvar emailed us), and sorry Texas but I wouldn't even give Nachdi Jawani a 99. Even People's got a 80.5 from a judge. Seriously? The judge couldn't round?

Csun kept hyping themselves up as the revival of southern california's greatest competition in the emails they sent us, and it turned out to be one of the worst competitions I've ever been to, and I've been to some pretty bad comps.

And the averages of the scores that Kanvar sent us were: texas: 87.6 RP:82.8 peoples:82.1

Not to defend this woman as I don't know her, or know her qualifications, or how she judged...

but a lot of people have been saying that a white judge is ridiculous, and frankly that's a slap in the face to all the non-punjabi (not just white) dancers on the circuit who are working hard to learn and represent the dance/culture well.

Non-Punjabi judges are going to be a natural progression as the circuit grows and matures in the coming years, and I think automatically disqualifying somebody only hurts in the long run. Maybe she spent a decade in Punjab, learning the culture from the source, who knows?

Again, not defending her or CSUN and certainly not attacking you personally, but the fact is that she may or may not know what she's doing, and it's unproductive for people on this forum to just dismiss her right away without any basis other than skin color.

Yo Ranjit, your new RP costumes were sick! I loved the colors. And I also heard about the Texas gimmick. I have yet to see the Texas routine and I'm sure it was sick if it placed, but still what does Lakers/Celtics have to do with Texas? Meh.

And Swi, your point make sense. It's not fair to judge her just because she's white. But I hope CSUN does release the qualifications of their judges.

swi, about the white judge issue...i get your point. from what i heard she is a south asian studies professor and when i asked one of the judges what she was doing as a judge and if she had any qualifications he rolled his eyes. i think that's telling enough of her qualifications.

Well said Jasjit! Theres nothing wrong in non-punjabi judges, but Comps PLEASE look at the judging criteria carefully before selecting judges. Also if judges dont know anything about traditionality, please dont have it in the judging criteria. Some teams do actually look at the judging criteria before applying to comps!

Wow thats sooo fucking stupid. The teams are the reason that CSUN even has a show in the first place and yet they don't let the teams watch the rest of the show? Really fucking stupid.

And that might mean that there aren't many videos of teams, but whatever I dunno. I really wanna see a vid of Truskool and get to see the new upcoming team in Boston haha.
Wasn't the venue a room for 500 ppl? How would they even allow the teams to watch without chaos and a mess going on? I think you're being very unfair and biased toward a first time show run by a student body. Also, I think it's very racist to say that just because a judge was white, that she held no qualifications. Quit being close minded.

But the thing is that I always thought it was understood that teams will get to watch the other performances once they're done. I mean, the performing teams ARE THE REASON that the CSUN even has a show in the first place, so you would think that they would at least be able to watch the show. And if only 500 people fit in the venue, then you should get a bigger venue.

Clearly comin into CSUN "a first year comp" we kind of knew it wasnt going to be the best organized. Venue was small but the crowd reaction to our set was amazing, the energy was off the hook. More than half the crowd got up to give us a standing ovation(coming out of texas that is hard to pull!!) How can i complain we didnt really depend on the committee much at all, truskool u guys are pretty chill but yall should still understand from being on previous teams how shit goes down. You cant have everything u want life yo. We came from out of state and didnt expect anything but to have a good time.
But it was a first year competition, right? All the people that hosted it before left, and there was a new committee, or at least I was told. There was a lot going on I'm sure that many people don't realize and you have to at least give them credit for trying. It's not cool to be so unfair to a first time, and yes I mean first time group.

But it's also a small school venue and they needed the profits. You cant blame them for the expenses -- they're students, they don't have the budget of a millionaire, that they are able to afford a larger venue. Remember, their payments are most likely coming from the people attending the event, not the teams. And was back stage small? That's probably why they didnt want anyone there -- it'd be too cramped and chaotic to have all the teams backstage, right? I'm sure the committee learned from this and now that they have the experience, they are aware of what went right and what went wrong. Watch, I'll bet my bottom dollar that next year they'll probably not host it at the school at all, but a bigger venue.

You all need to relax a bit and realize that they probably did the best they could and while they didn't personally please all of you because they aren't rich enough to get a big venue, buy a ridiculously famous guest artist, or were able to install more seats for those of you who got pissed about watching the show, they are a starting group. Everything starts somewhere and it's always going to have flaws; rather than bashing on them for those flaws, maybe offer constructive criticism that isn't so critical or callous. I'm sure given more planning time, less interventions from outside sources that may have deterred the event, and without the added stress of other problems that teams or the public may have given to them, things will be a lot better.

Just give them time and patience. I'm sure that that's all they'll ask from you.

Or looks like I was in the audience and a volunteer there. Maybe you should get your facts straight.

(edit) Just because I decide not to be an ass to these people, doesn't make me one of them. I don't jump on the bandwagon like apparently you do.
