love live bhangra but a lot of new live teams coming out all over the world are starting to have singers who can`t really sing with them going off tune like 99 percent of the time :( , but when the dancers are really good and the singer and dholi is really good then its really fun to watch. I prefer the cali live teams and nj, but not really a fan of many music sets because they just go so fast at times and like hardeep_singh has mentioned the live dancers usually emphasize more because the pace isn`t rushed and overall it just sounds more amazing in my opinion as you keep the music simple with the boli`s as they have a lyrical flow to it as mentioned by harjitsingh, but their are really good music set teams out their but live is my personal preference.

The dhol just speaks to the dancer so much more than a recorded music set, live dhol just has so much more to offer.

Sometimes it's hard to really appreciate live sets until you actually do it yourself. Then you might begin to realize what you've been missing in your life. I'm serious.
as a viewer: Watching an amazing live set and watching an amazing music set is the same for me.

as a dancer: Dancing to dhol is just a whole different game. the feeling you get when dancing to a live set, is just. idk how to explain it. its something else. yeah prefer dancing live to music anyday. like barua said, you gotta do it once and then youl be hooked. Your heart is like racing and shit extra hardcore on a live set. feels good.

Some of you guys should consider writing your college entrance essay on the greatness of "live bhangra" (a.k.a. bhangra). ;) Lots of poetic waxing and je ne sais quois...

Seriously though, something I am curious about: Are there many/any people here that have had success (we may define "success" arbitrarily as competition wins, I guess) dancing both for "live" and "music" teams. (Maybe you already responded.) It would be interesting to hear the thoughts of someone with a strong foot in both worlds.

Mr. Schreffler, there are many who have had success, as you define it here, dancing for both live music and recorded music teams, myself included. I think it's safe to say we all started out dancing to recording music, and then took up dancing to live music at some later point in our competitive careers.

I have found that my experience dancing with a live music team greatly enhanced my abilities as a bhangra dancer in general. Live music routines are generally longer and more physically demanding than recorded music ones. And since there are only 8 dancers (by convention), there are no opportunities for hiding in the back and taking a break. Also, because these routines are less formation intensive, there is a greater emphasis on execution, athleticism, and individual showmanship, as it is this which captures the audience.

I've only been dancing for about four years and live bhangra gives me thrills when i see teams like shiv chand or PPA(used to) perform. Sharukh is right you can't really explain the feeling when you're dancing live but it gets you addicted to the thrill.

Yes, but it is an acquired taste... altho easily acquired once u see a really good live team in person... wow. from the first heyck to the dholi starting and the dancers first come out... it is something totally different. no music mix can hit those same shivers down your spine. for me it was shan-e-punjab at groundshaker  ;D

Great thread and let's not forget the orchestrator-in-chief of a strong live set, the dholi. Jordon, once you dance on a live team with a strong/talented dholi, you will be changed forever my friend and bhangra will take a whole new meaning for you. GUARANTEED.
