Hi all,

For those of you who remember, we had an NYC screening of documentary filmmaker Wenrui Chen's "Shaan Mutiyaaran Di Bhangra Club: The Pride of Women" back in May. http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/documentary-screening-of-'shaan-mutiyaaran-di-bhangra-club-the-pride-of-women'/

Wenrui has been traveling abroad since and wasn't able to get us an electronic copy of the documentary until now, so huge apologies for the delay in getting this out. Film description:
Bhangra is a North Indian folk dance traditionally done by men. The young women of the all-female bhangra team Shaan Mutiyaaran Di Bhangra Club (SMD) face off against 9 other teams at the Bhangra Fever 3 competition. Team captain Dheerja and teammates Priya and Navi narrate the challenges they face as an all-female bhangra team with no coach or institutional support. Can SMD win with their unique take on bhangra?

Please take some time and watch the culmination of a year-long project that we on SMD are very proud of!

Shaan Mutiyaaran Di (SMD) Bhangra Club: The Pride of Women

Correction from the video: One of the teams at Fever was incorrectly labeled as AEG, apologies!

Sickk! This is an incredible video and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is also an inspiration towards the community especially to all the young women out there doing bhangra. This video really caught my attention because I can relate to this team. AMPD has also struggled being an all live girls team surrounded by guys teams at competitions and in the bhangra scene in general. We also do not have a coach, nor did any of us learn proper traditional bhangra. It is great to see another girls team similar to us and it is also great to see you guys express what girls teams have to go through! Keep up the great work and congratulations to all your accomplishments :)

Thanks for the support everyone! KDave - that's exactly the purpose of us creating this documentary. We want to promote discussion of women in bhangra and how the female bhangra scene is progressing. I also hope it encourages more girls to create all girls teams and develop their own identities and interpretations of bhangra.

Personally my opinions have fluctuated a lot even since this interview as I've experienced different dancing styles (coed with AEG and Columbia, all girls with SMD). But at the end of the day I think girls should use the opportunity to develop their own "brand" of bhangra. It could be traditional, modern, live, music, anything - but the fact that you're women doing an all male dance means your interpretation is something new and exciting.

However that's my opinion, and a lot of people think differently. I'd love for this video and post to become a forum for all of your thoughts!

Excellent short documentary. I wish we could more of these or one for every team in the circuit to "highlight" what they are all about.

As someone who works full time, I'm always impressed to hear/see the level of dedication independent teams (such as SMD) have.

Keep up the great work ladies,

~ Basim :)

I don't remember the results for Bhangra Fever 3 and by the end of the documentary I was like, I hope they win! Sick documentary, short, well-edited, good narration.

Do you know what type of camera was used to film this?

@ 9:13 its AG (Anakhilay Gabru) not AEG :)
no one ever gets it right :( :p LOLLL

Only AG could pull off that much swag all at once ;)
So sorry for the typo guys! Wenrui (the filmmaker) had to edit this together in a short amount of time to meet her deadline and we didn't notice the typo until later.
