Hello All,

We'd like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting Elite 8 Bhangra Invitational 2012!

As promised, we are posting the complete Judging Package here.

This post contains the following:
1. Judging Packet which was submitted to teams (PDF) - This explains the process. The goal is to determine one winner, not to rank 8 teams.
2. Compiled Judging scores (XLS).
3. All copies of the judging score sheets (PDF).

Please note:
- Team captains were informed of the judging process well in advance and agreed to compete with this format.
- All judges were provided with separate notepads to take notes and were asked to keep them if they are asked for feedback from teams in the future.
- No team went over the assigned time limit.
- No team displayed poor sportsmanship on the competition day.

See right below that in the spreadsheet: Top 3 teams are open for deliberation.

We need to stop dropping highest and lowest scores. There's absolutely no reason to do it anymore, qualified judges should be counted on to judge fairly. Pashi and Benny's influence were mitigated because Benny's scores were on average highest and Pashis were on average lowest.

I actually asked the committee to give us the unprocessed scores (so all the numbers without dropping any) just so we'd get an extra datapoint and the results didn't change much, but still, with this many great teams all the points matter and having two of the judges essentially thrown out is silly.

I haven't looked at APD's sheet but the proposal was most definitely memorable (ending). Back flip was unique too because he did it from quite a height, if I remember correctly it was from the top of a three man tower. (Emphasis on three lol).

Must have been frustrating for NYPD because the raw score made them the winner, and even after taking out the high/low scores (or w/e was done) it was still very close.

i think going first in the show really effects scoring, had we had gone last and shuffled around the other teams the outcome may have been different. As a community we should try to find a way to eliminate this from happening, i do not have a solution i just think that we should try to come up with one. Every comp has a team that has to go first, its NEVER fun being that team lol. goodnight. please enjoy our performance! Joshiley Jawan @ Elite 8 Bhangra Invitational 2012

I agree, I think going first does have an effect on the overall outcome. I'm pretty sure that for the three years that Elite 8 took place, the winning team has never gone first- something I find interesting.

It's hard because you cannot give the team that goes first full points because of the possibility of a later team that might be better in a particular category. It is a bet on a possibility that it might occur which shouldn't occur. My suggestion: use points as a reference but ultimately leave the decision of winner to discussion between judges. I know that discussion occurs but it is not nearly lengthy enough.

I agree with this sentiment. Show order has always had some sort of an effect on judging and there seems to be little that can be done to accommodate for the disadvantage. But I guess there's always that advantage in showcasing ideas first if two teams were to ever have the same ideas. And, check out this awesome deal I found online for 3 free sticker sheets! http://www.livingsocial.com/cities/2/deals/274400-three-custom-sticker-sheets

JJ lost points for damaging the stage and poor sportsmanship? Someone want to elaborate on what happened?

no they did not, the page was just filled with my general notes, didn't realize it was getting published also with the other judges so I have random stuff strewn about on all the sheets

Tried to type a detailed and analytic passage inquiring about how the scores ended up the way they ended up.... but what i did was open the default guidelines and points and in my head distribute all the teams points as i would have gave them...

1 JJ
2 NYPD/UNC
3 NYPD/UNC
4 AEG
5 BK
6 SMD
7 VCU
8 APD

JJ quite simply came with the most creative bhangra routine, and had the best dancers of the night (though one guy in green realllllly needed to chill out. still a good dancer, but literally toppled over with his energy lol). and even with teams that had outside gimmicks, UNC did ones that did not stop, or in my opinion take away from their performance. NYPD came hard with unreal energy, unreal swagger, but fell in cleanliness, in overall execution by individual dancers, and by 3 gimmicks i feel the set would have been stronger without..sliding guys on the ground with the chaal for khunde, the flower wheel whatever the f*ck thing, and the ending. yeah, i didnt like the ending at all. Nonetheless, they had some amazing, challenging dance segments that impressed me.

Wont go thorugh the rest of the teams, who were all great, but it fell off for me for placing after these 3.

I dont understand how UNC earned more creativity USING BHANGRA (as per the guidelines) as JJ, or how NYPD was more synchronized than JJ... but i do see how JJ didnt earn strong starting points compared to the other two. I also dont know how UNC didnt get a perfect score on synchronicity, or how they got matched formation scores as the other 2, when they were challenged simply by the fact that they went 12. Credit has to be given at the level of thought, practice, and execution that goes into 16 man sets. and finally, JJ danced longest of all three if i'm not mistaken. That is a factor that really should have been taken into account. One thing for JJ, next time make sure the shayer ends on time, because your black jorhi missed the drop in the beginning, and it was very noticable. and starting moments can break you.

Lol... so much for not writing an essay. :)

Edit: Just wanted to add one thing since everyone is talkign about how people talk crap about Elite not being Elite anymore. It should be known that the principles and the time schedule are what really alot of people say elites not as special, because there isnt enough turnover in teams. I myself feel that way. But what i hope is that with the AMAZING PERFORMANCES BY EACH AND EVERY TEAM (some of whom had their best to date... see BK, wow)... Elite will see that it doesnt take an SGPD/NJ showdown to bring out the best in teams. that their criteria for elite can be based on the potential seen bubbling beneath the surface... and the hunger that teams feel when it is presumed they cant. UNC, VCU, SMD... all the late editions went SO hard. elite? you damn right.

The way I judge (non-bhangra, non-dancing) competitions is to give the first group 50/100 and then then judge according to that standard. Its tricky, and many people do not like getting 22/100 but I figure a normalization is required somewhere..

With all due respect, and I think many people agree with me on this one, the circuit needs a new wave of qualified judges to enter the scene ASAP. That's all I'm going to say about the judging packet and "deliberation".

Big ups to ALL the teams for putting on amazing performances this weekend. Gimmicks and sets were absolutely unreal.

Also a big congrats to the elite 8 committee for running this competition so successfully. I personally had the time of my life for those 9 minutes on stage.

I didn't realize the "Elite 8 reference" was a point on the judging sheet. Every single judge gave every single team that 1 point, except for BK. NONE of the judges gave them that point. lol rough

I think that's fair and eliminates the "going first" dread that most teams have and any negative effect show order has on outcomes.
