According to the rubric, I can understand why VCU won. But going off from the rubric, I would have to put it between NJ and SGPD for first.
I still don't understand this part, what exactly is dancing to the rubric? I'm a little confused about this

I havent seen the rubric for E8 so I cant comment specifically, but sometimes the audience has a certain idea of the "BEST TEAM OF THE NIGHT"... Here is a great example of Nachdi Jawani, which had a super-creative dance but had slips/technical errors. Depending on how the rubric is weighted, those technical losses could have taken them out of 1st place, even though they may have gotten 25/25 in "artistic elements" that reflect their creativity.

tl;dr: What audience sees as "best" may not match exactly with what the rubric dictates. This leaves two options for judges: announce placings SOLELY based on the points OR come to a logical consensus, with the rubric + points as a guide.

For each competition, the rubric has an X number of points possible for each different element, such as execution, creativity, traditionality, etc. In comparison to SGPD and NJ, VCU may not have been as creative, but they most likely gained more points in execution and cleanliness and what not. I think this will be more clear once the score sheets are posted.

Its two different things to judge a team while breaking everything down to a certain number of points in categories and elements, vs watching a performance and ranking the teams based on the performance as whole. If as a judge you were to watch all eight performances and only take notes on them, and then rank the teams on who you thought has the best overall performance, the outcome would be different than adding up all the points separately, though i don't think it would be a day and night difference. And like NCS said in his post about the judging, the top three teams were only separated by a point or two, so the rubric judging was not far off from the general audience's point of view.

This isn't the first competition where this has happened. Similar controversies have arisen in the past as well, and the logic behind it can be traced to the judging rubrics.

thanks...I guess when everything is broken down so technically the tiniest mistakes really do a lot of damage...and like you mentioned already, it will be more clear once the scoresheets are posted

I haven't decided if I care to post some sort of "review"...but it was an AWESOME WEEKEND and if you weren't there...sucks for you because you missed out.

Hotel situation couldn't have been more perfect...the weekend was kind of crazy and overwhelming and exciting and awesome all at the same time. So many "Are you XYZ from BTF?" and all that, it was funny. Everyone who is anyone was there. Just kidding, I'm being Elitist. Pre-party was so fun even though it was low in attendance...after party was crap and a half. Venue was shitty and small and weirdly shaped, and they played too much hip hop...also, people are GROSS...haha.

LBC was my groupie team of choice and I think that was my best decision ever this weekend. Such a fun group of people who were a great example to all of what Bhangra is supposed to be about...getting Nike dunks that say LBC on them. ha.

The venue was nice, a bit small but a good move for a first year competition...sound was bad, the only mix I could really hear was Empire's...so definitely fix that for the future...

I've liked other sets of each one of these teams better, so I don't know if everyone really brought their "A game." My choice for the winner was actually Nachdi Jawani, but who cares I still love VCU anyway so congrats to them!

As a former classical dancer myself, I LOVED Ek Taal...great concept, very creative, does anyone have their mix? Also, Hip Hop group was awesome as well I think they should try out for ABDC.

Everyone probably has different choices for their Elite 8, so you gotta take this competition with a grain of salt and in quotes. The winner of this competitions is the "best team in North America." People from each team got to judge the other teams, so blame yourselves if you aren't happy.

I'm sleepy. I don't really do shout-outs, but glad to meet all the cool people this weekend!

Something to ponder...not sure if this competition can really happen every year given that a year isn't truly enough time to give the Elite Crown to another team...some of these teams will still remain next year....so when's Elite 8 Live teams?

every one say what you want but we all know NJ unofficially won but a huge shout out to navi sidhu ;)
seriously, your guys team name is the biggest misnomer in the world, and each of your posting members proves that...

maybe thats because its not even a real team...
damn, so not only do you imagine competitions in your head, but you are also a part of an imaginary team?

kudos to you my friend, I wish I had an imagination like yous
i dont imagine competitions in my head i watch videos
haha and what does your imaginary team do? make homevideos of performances? Btw, the fake team name still doesnt change it from being a misnomer. Check it, google.com, put MISNOMER in the search box. and then incase that still doesn't make it clear to you, read every post you and your "teammates" have ever posted on btf, count up the CREDIBLE contributions, and nice, cool, HAPPY contributions, and then ull understand my comment, with an addendum: your "FAKE" team's" name is a misnomer.

... or do i gotta define addendum for you too?

Before I get modded out because I dont like putting up with people "boo-shit" opinions that mean NOTHING (after a long day of studying everything about the brain)... ladies and gentlemen PLEASE do not KNOCK PEOPLE's VICTORIES! WAIT FOR THE VIDS FOR YOUR SUPER EDUCATED AND LAW-LIKE OPINIONS!... then we can have The Happy Gabru Punjab De version of elite 8 judging and results, and we'll all be so so so KHUSHHHHHHHH!

On another note, I'm waiting for all the AMAZING STORIES guys!? Post about BTF reunions, meeting people who were cuter/uglier in their BTF avatar, making best friends out of people you don't like... ANYTHING!

A travesty occurred at this competition. I feel bad for Nachdi Jawani. It's obvious now that Gujjus jacked dandia raas from NJ. For years, we have been calling it our own, but in fact, we stole it from NJ. Frak. It was one of the very few things we were actually good for. All we have left now is dhokla.

I'm sorry, NJ. The Case Raas Goondas are ashamed of themselves. :)

hahahaha, also someone on the team asked, "do we really need to apply to bayside". Nearly made them run a mile Remember the Titans style.

what is the need for this comment? dandias are used in punjab as well, and i think NJ was trying to show that. This isnt the first time either, NJ girls used it once before. If your upset cause Gujus have nothing of their own thats worthwhile im sorry, if your upset because you think NJ stole raas gimmicks im sorry.

Either way, nachdi jawani just took it to another level in showing what punjab has to offer. Although not really bhangra, they still showcased punjabi culture. props.
