"Famous" Guest Performers at bhangra competitions

As a member of a Bhangra competition committee I can confirm that these guest performers/artists DO NOT help with ticket sales. We got Manak-E last year and everyone knows that he sucked but H-Dhami this year was very good and delivered a very entertaining and energetic performance. Our audience just loved him especially when he went into the crowd while performing and danced with them and gave away CDs and T-shirts. He came to our mixer to talk to the teams and wish them luck and took pictures with them. He was a very down to earth guy and teams loved it especially the ladies!

Now, my point is even though artists don't add to the ticket sales a right performer can definitely add to the entertainment factor of the show. Also, a right artist also definitely helps with ticket sales of the After-party.

The thing is, people don't really come to Bhangra competitions BECAUSE of an artist, they come to support family, friends, etc. that are dancing in the show. And although it seems like hey maybe we will fill those other seats with people because of the performer I don't think that's really true...the performer is not going to get you from break-even to making a profit...

Competitions should definitely consider inviting local talent in the bhangra scene....singers, DJs, etc. Very few artists that come to these are worth the money...they lip sync, they pretend to DJ and it ends up being pointless really...

Word. Half the time there are 3-5 singers on the competing teams who can out-sing the main performer.

Glad to hear from a competition committee member and set things in perspective, sometimes all you need is the right performer...manak-e uncle isn't going to mingle with the teams or crowds, he's more interested in if the botal is going to be Crown or Black & somebody like Dhami who is a down to earth person can make all the difference in the competition.

From the way I see it, there will probably never be a bhangra competition in AZ, so when I do go to out of state comps. I see who the artist is and if he is performing, kind of like getting a 2 for 1 deal. But bringing out a Zeus or Aman Hayer is pointless, cause all they do is spin their own songs for 30 minutes.

I kinda wanted to hear from comp organizers on this topic since a few of you are on this website. What is your justification in bringing a "famous" artist when nobody really cares to see them?

Well..........when we started out it just seemed customary to have a guest artist to me. One reason most shows get artists is because while you calculate the results you need something to keep the crowd entertained and that extra 20-25 minutes to figure out the results and check your math. You could substitute an artist for an exhibition team though. I def. agree with you guys on that fact that having an artist really doesnt do much for the show, it's just an extra thing to add to your lineup and possibly attract a few more poeple.

My Opinion. At about 1am when your piss drunk and you've already been rejected by every girl in the club, either your going get frustrated and leave or your gonna keep trying and end up pissin someone off and get in a fight. Having someone "famous" on stage can POSSIBLY divert attention from that drama. idk, i hope you all had fun at the dda12 afterparty, everyone involved worked really hard to make it happen.

it would also reduce the ticket price encouraging more people to attend the show, which might somehow educate more people on bhangra and get them to join/start teams.
