Moral of the story: Don't let maava dry on under your nails/around your fingertips...use warm water and ample amounts of soap when washing your hands after starching...and, if I'm not mistaken (and there's a good chance that I am), starch and water is a perfect environment for bacteria to grow, so allowing starch to hide underneath your nails will help bacteria grow and therefore might lead to pain in those areas...like I said before, this is somewhat speculation, so please feel free to correct me...
