Geneseo Bhangra: Revisited

So, I am not sure how much Waldo had to do with this choreography...but Tohar Punjabiyan Dhay is a song that I took at least 3 or 4 passes on attempting to choreograph and I am not sure how many of the new heads have seen this video (especially the first minute)...is absolutely ridiculous...theres no real solid beat line to the first minute of this song which makes it difficult to choreo let alone teach in the first place, but the cleanliness with which this was done is sick..that lean in the beginning is so, so cold.....watch....enjoyyy...ahh good old co-ed college bhangra...

i remember going to geneseo a week before this show to help waldo and crew with pagg starching, and they showed their choreo to tohar to me, and i was dumbfounded...and if im not mistaken, it was brad, one of the (white) gb cocaptains who did the choreo for this particular segment...and kamran, i think there were 2, maybe 3, desis on that particular gb team...if youre gonna modern, go all out like these guys...great routine, their best one easily

Oh okay that is amazing. That is definitely a good move to reach outside your bubble and extract talents. Its hard for a lot of teams let alone its hard to get a lot of people comfortable with performing dances that are absolutely foreign to them.

I've seen some pretty sick coreography to Tohar Punjabian Di. I wouldn't say this is "ridiculous," but nonetheless a job well done. For a newer co-ed team as diverse as Geneseo, it was probably one their best performances in my opinion. Btw, is this team still around? Never see them compete anymore. Are they waiting for some fusion bhangra competition to debut their new team & new routine?

Nahh, they're still around. They recently competed at Muquabla 2008 at University of Buffalo. They compete at smaller scale competitions here and there. I first saw them live at Desi Hungama last year in Syracuse.

Geneseo is awesome, my kind of team for sure. It's a shame that they never really competed on a higher level back then (though I bet there were good reasons for it). It's not just that they had a ton of diversity on the team, but that diversity actually showed through in the dances they put together, like some obvious hip-hop influences and the live step team action (which was mindBLASTING).

We danced at that Pao and I remember seeing and loving their performance there. The choreo to Tohar Punjabian Di was a little too much for me, personally, but I still appreciate the creativity, and I'm a big fan of the other stuff they were doing. I will admit to being inspired by some of the things they were doing when we were putting together our dances, too.

Good job to Waldo and everyone else who was on that team. I use the past tense only because I haven't seen anything from them recently, but I'm sure they're still holding it down.

Edit: Oh, and the clip from Welcome to Jamrock was one of the biggest "Why the hell didn't I think of that!?" moments I can remember at a bhangra comp. Badass.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. Random find Jeeti!

My style of choreo has def changed since Pao Bhangra 6 but originally I started with a modern team and I can still appreciate the hard work and energy they put in to a set. Almost 2 years later (post-graduation), Geneseo Bhangra is still around but like kinnell said they only compete in regional/local competitions. I still keep in touch with those peeps and help them whenever possible.

I think the current team roster is around 50/50 desi/non-desis but when I started there were only 3 desi members out of 14. Mostly college teams have a diverse membership body but as non-desi bhangra dancers graduate, independent teams have also started to acquire non-desi team members.

Here is another view of the same performance:

Awesome routine. I like shoulder surf choreo the best. Watch Waleed tearing it up front and center.
