You know what would be sick? If people in India were less complacent about politics. I would like that. Politicians have godlike status there. Makes me sick.

Its pretty simple why Gandhi is on the note and someone like, say Raje Shivaji isn't. Shivaji was a staunch pro-Maharashtrian king who was well known for his rebellions against the Mughal (read: Muslim) masters. Such an act would alienate Muslim populations (which is exactly why Hindutva parties like Shiv Sena use him as his mascot). Prithviraj Chauhan would be a tip of the hat to the Rajput monachies of yore which the newly formed Indian republic did not want to acknowledge (especially right when they were stealing their kingdoms to form federalist states). Porus got his ass beat by that manlover Sikander.

Gandhi is completely safe because he openly preached love for all the ethnicities of India, but his actual politics definitely showed that he was not open minded to truly Revolutionary ideas (of Bhagat Singh, Bose, etc.) Still, when creating nationalist symbols for integration purposes, the Indian govt did not look for historical accuracy. They looked for political correctedness (intl recognition/martyrdom didn't hurt either). The safer the political symbol, the more easily it will be digested by the wide ethnic and religious gentry. For more on such revisionist histories, look at the Mexican Revolution and how its "heroes" have become national symbols when in reality Villa, Madero, Zapata, etc all equally hated each other and had their own motives.

The true freedom fighter that won India its independence was WWII. Thank god that shit destroyed Europe's economy or else colonial powers like Britain and France would never relinquish their empires
Varun rarely ever posts...but whenever he does...he is so money...the justification for Gandhi on currency is really as simple as he presented it.

Sat Sri Akal.. Copy to all.. Thanx a lot Saleem veere, to send me a link to this topic. First of all, people who don't even know how to spell "Gandhi", are commenting on his life, achievements and status. For all who don't know, with due respect and utmost regard to them, it is not "Gandi", it is "Gandhi".

Now about the song, I agree to each and every word of the song except two portions which state that "Kuj v nhi kita taan v notaan utte aa gya" and "Hadd kr ditti, haq kalla hi jamaa gya"..

To the singer and writer and all those who love this song and each and every word of it, if Gandhi didn't do "Anything", then might be mine and crores of peoples' knowledge of history needs to be re-furnished. "Dandi March", "Non-Co-operation Movement", "Countless strikes", "Hunger strike which actually gave him the scinttilating physique shown in most of his photographs" and God knows many more things which i don't know, were supposedly the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi himself, to the Nation. If no, then history books should be re-written i suppose.

Secondly, "Haq jamaa gya".. he didn't tell anyone to give him all that. People who regarded him and his thoughts did that for him. Today, most people don't, but because it is there since it all started, so he has his photo on the currency notes.

Even i am one of those who are somewhat anti-Gandhi, but i am not a 100% anti-Gandhi person. he did a lot for the Nation. You and me can just speak today. How many of us will even think to travel the whole of India on foot just to keep the point that Indian people should be allowed to extract and sell salt, which at that time would have been around 20kg for Re.1, and that too, when you know that you will not get a share of the profit ?? How many of us will sit on a hunger strike to keep our Nation's peoples' point of view in front of the government which will actually hamper our well-built bodies ??? No one would like to look like that "Gandhi" ????????????

How many of us will fight for someone else's freedom ?? he did that in South-Africa.

Think over it buddies before you criticise. Even if they were wrong at many things, still we are nothing in front of them.

^ not even about that bro.

I think we're discussion the lack of OTHER significant Indians who deserve more or at least equal celebrity.

we can discuss the political implications of Bhagat Singh's actions or the Humongous venture of Bose, but the fact remains
that in the play of history, they were not given the respect they deserve (amongst so many others as well).

I'm generally not Anti-Gandhi. I'm just Pro-other folks. (prob those that my personality type can relate to better)

sure man, the main ones are arrian's 'the campaigns of alexander the great' and plutarch's 'age of alexander'. loaded with information and details about his life and the world he lived in. my favorite thing in those books to read about is when he goes to a place called nysa in the hindu khush and just parties like for days in honor of dionysus. crazy kinky stuff happens.

one that came out a few years ago that i never got completley finished is fuller's 'the generalship of alexander the great'. lots of details about the armies and the battles and the strategies he used. great read.

Have you read it? I want to.

Supposedly, Jaswant portrayed Jinnah in a somewhat positive light - ofcourse that wasn't going to settle well with the BJP.
its next on my reading list, ill let you know soon. my great uncle is a highup dude in rss/bjp and was telling me that jaswant singh had been wanting to write this book for the last 25 years but felt he would get death threats if he did. he said now he doesnt give a dang. a book like this is sorely needed though because the indian history that my parents were taught and my cousins are still taught is that the british and jinnah/muslim league were the villains and poor ol' congress party was were the victims. everything i have read in the last 5 years though has shown that nehru/gandhi/congress deserve the bulk of the blame over what happened.

the conspiracy theory my uncles have been telling me since i was a kid is that gandhi gets all the credit because the british/west want gandhi, a non violent, weak old dude to be representative of india/indian culture.

Perhaps for you the discussion is FOR recognition of other folks...and that is completely legitimate...however there has been MUCHHH straight up anti-Gandhi discussions on this forum..if you listen to the lyrics of the song posted...there are specific lyrics which Varunjit paaji was responding to...

The energy against Gandhi is MISGUIDED...should others feel the same way that other revolutionaries receive credit..it is not right for those to channel their energy towards putting down another person fighting for the same cause.

Varunjit was responding to those who were putting down Gandhi...not those that want recognition for other revolutionaries other than Gandhi.

Same situation across the border in Pakistan. Complete brain wash of the youth and "Congress-wanted-to-kill-all-Muslims" is the lesson we are taught. It is always wide to step back and read from a neutral standpoint if you want to get an accurate picture of what truly happened.

From my understanding, both sides are to blame for what happened. Def let me know about your thoughts on the book and if its worth reading.

yea, i guess nuanced views have no place, haha. this book i read last year http://www.amazon.com/Great-Partition-Making-India-Pakistan/dp/0300143338/ref=pd_sim_b_2 is a really good read too if you are interested. it makes you angry to read how stupid and short sighted everyone behaved, ugh.

Bhagat Singh statue at Parliament.

Let's be real here. Most Punjabi people only give a fuck about this issue because we want to inflate our own egoes. I doubt many of us really care about due credence to freedom fighters like Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, Tipu Sultan, or, like J mentioned, Subhash Chandra Bose (who was more aggressive/violence embracing than the HSRA ever were).

What we really want is to synthesize a Punjabi icon (out of someone like Shaheed Bhagat Singh) and for him to gain prominence because for some reason we connect him to Punjabi/Sikh culture, when in reality, like a true Marxist-Leninst, he disavowed most of his regional, economic, and religious ties that he was born into. Yes people, contrary to what Bukan Jatt's Morni implies, Bhagat Singh neither did bhangra nor repped 5jabi kulture, styllllll.

I know we all have tons of stuff to say about the injustices of history, governments, and society at large, but really, before we criticize others, lets seriously self-examine ourselves.
