No way that HPD shouldve not gotten 1st. This is the reason you don't get Bollywood Choreographers as bhangra judges. Giant Bhangra defnintely messed up this year and their credibility has now joined the rest of the Bhangra competitions that continue to not understand Bhangra, and non Punjabis continue to help manipulate the Punjabi culture (Thanks Nakul Dev whatever your name is)
Ok I'll start this off by saying I love HPD.
Also, could anyone from the teams be kind enough to post a review of the weekend? Thank you.

Ok next thing... We've now argued on this forum about EVERY SINGLE PLACING at EVERY SINGLE COMPETITION for however long BTF AND POL have been up and running. Here's the thing-organizers, after they have picked their judges and given them criteria to judge upon, have nothing to do with the placings. That's out of their hands. Outside of picking the judges, the job of the organizers is to get sponsors, pick a venue, make the teams feel comfortable, lure a crowd, etc. etc. If they have done those properly-than you still have a well organized competition.

When it comes to judges-maybe Cali competitions don't get "incredibly qualified judges" because maybe there's a scarcity in the area; maybe it costs a lot of money to fly out judges from other areas; maybe they dont take captains of other teams in the area because they don't want any bias involved in judging... I don't know their reasonings. But if Giant's a not-well-established competition (such as Bruin, Boston... etc.), it's HARD to find judges like that. And it's not like Giant is being thrown by a major Bhangra Academy. So they got probably did the best they could with what is left.

If Giant has now joined "the rest of the competitions that continue to not understand bhangra," than that pretty much includes ever single competition out there. I don't think it's them that "doesn't understand bhangra," I just think that sometimes teams win and sometimes they don't. Everyone needs to stick in a heavy flow tampon and get over it-what do you want us to tell you

Also, how do you not know that Nakul doesn't know what he's doing? He specializes in bollywood-how do you not know he also knows A LOT about bhangra? I think you picked a well known fact about him and ran off with assumptions. Maybe he was the only one that had the placings on his paper the way you were expecting them.

well we appreciate all the criticism because it will simply only make us better dancers. Even though i disagree slightly. No one on our team ever said we were "hot stuff" all we said was dont judge a book by its cover or in our case dont judge a team by its name. And we're a new team so along the way we'll over come all the obstacles which we have faced and improve as well. =) other than that i think we did pretty awesome for having 3 weeks to make a routine and perfect it. =) :)

I think the one thing that went against HEERAY was that they were the FIRST team to perform! It sucks that going first should ever affect the placings, but it happens! Exhibit A: Nachdi Jawani @ DDA 09! :p

it wasn't the same hotel. This year's hotel was a 5 min walk from the venue.

Also for the UCI guy who TOOK HIS PAGH OFF in celebration of winning 1st place, you are lucky I didn't pull you to the side and teach you a lesson. [content removed]
Trust me, I've always emphasized the value of a pagh on my team. I take the extra time to tie it as best as I can and I'm always checking them to make sure it's secure before our performance. Now, if I knew he was going to take it off I would have told him not to - I always say if it hurts put up with it but don't take it off. But he was just in the moment and he took it off, he didn't throw it on the ground, he didn't wipe his ass with it, he just took it off and held it. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it disrespectful.

If you think one team should have placed over another then list some legit reasons as to why you think that, don't just look for stupid reasons to bitch.

I believe CSUN Bhangra (where your team tied for 3rd) had a white lady as a judge and no one said anything about her knowledge of bhangra, but you didn't seem to have a problem with that.

And if you care so much about paghs, try putting in some time and learn to tie decent ones for your own team.

ok ranjit, we probably shook hands, I talked to your boy Varun for like 10 min, im friends with half your team and was getting you guys my dholi at the last second, and we know each other and your gonna say, "try putting on some decent paags for your own team." I tied the paags at csun, not him, and I had an hour or so to do 12 paags, so cmon now, im sure for Giant you had more time.

At CSUN which you brought up, and I clearly heard you express how mad you were that we placed over you guys, we actually did have a problem with the white lady judging because Texas got second. IF anything I was saying your team should have placed at CSUN cuz its the closest thing to real bhangra, and not gimmick infested. So we did indeed have a problem with her.

I didn't expect you to stoop so low but damn. I was trying to help you guys and you bash pretty hard. You explained your paag thing fine in first paragraph, but to add on the extra diss about decent paags unnecessary.

Proper Breakdown of 1st and 2nd placings.

Heeray Punjab De

WENT ALL LIVE.

Great Intro, beautiful algozey (Pappi) crisp clean boliyan (Pali paaji) and very powerful dhol. The set was ridiculously clean, from what I saw there were no mistakes. Phumniyan, Sial Kot, Chummar, Mirza (my favorite)....I can go on but the point is that every thing was covered and was executed beautifully. I think in uniforms one kaintha was loose and that was pretty much it. Each dancer had grace, energy and smiled the whole time. All partners showed nakhre on doubles moves and there was tremendous crowd support as well. Heeray tore it up.

Biggest stand out point: Each dancer made Bhangra look so easy, the grace, energy and very essence could be seen through their smiling faces.

Rangla Punjab

Great Intro music was loud and clear and the song selection was very nice. It was a good mix in which girls were able to perform and not be "manly". Once again all the moves were covered from what I can recall. However Phumniyaan were done pushing "up". Phumniyaan are done pushing down not up. Each dancer was very clean however like I've said before, girls screaming brrurhaa isn't to appealing. The jori part was nice, got the crowd (guys moving their laks). There was grace, there was energy, it was a great set and upon them ending I knew they would place.

Biggest Stand out: Guys were great, but the girls were just as good and actually did moves that looked good for girls and weren't manly, no gimmicks- just really well done bhangra.

Conclusion.

Both teams executed very well. There were no mistakes that I could find from either team. There was one aspect that I mentioned before and that is RP performing Phumniyaan wrong. If there were no mistakes, and both teams had great intros outros moves execution nakhre you name it. Then what is left? Traditionality points????

When teams like Heeray perform first, then the traditionality points would be based off of them, no? The point is that RP danced on music, and they had girls on their team, so how can they possibly pull the same amount of points as HPD on traditionality. Traditional emphasizes live and even though a team can be traditional and on music- there is no comparison to LIVE Bhangra because that is the true form of Bhangra.

I don't know what happened, but both teams did great but there is no doubt that HPD- went live, executed, and were the more traditional and real bhangra team. RP brought it and executed just as well and clean within their awesome set but in the end the difference still seemed obvious between them and Heeray.

Jaskaran, yea we shook hands and I would have shaken hands with Jasjit also had I ran into him, but that doesn't give him the right to call anyone an asshole. All I did was stoop to the same level he did in my reply. He could have easily gotten his point across without taking the tone he did.

Jasjit, it shows a lot of ignorance on your part to say that I can't understand the value of a pagh if I don't wear one. I know of plenty sardars who act in a way that many would argue doesn't go together with what a pagh represents. What about them? Not only do I respect what it represents, but also those who go through what it takes to wear one. Like I said before, I don't think he did anything too out of line to the point where you would have to say what you said. There have been many dancers who have made the mistake of putting their pagh on the floor, some of which I'm assuming knew they shouldn't have done it. But inexperienced people get nervous and make dumb decisions on stage when a couple hundred are people watching.

people take their pughs off at the ends of performances all the time, sometimes people's heads hurt...chill the eff out man...fuckin some people on btf are so extreme...it isn't disrespect, and if you think it is, it wasn't intentional...jews take their yamachas off if they are itchy, muslims take their kuffis off if they are uncomforable...comfort has nothing to do with disrespect...heavy flow son, heavy flow...

please don't give a speech about the history of the pugh and punjab, because this is just seriously silly at this point.

Faizan...the thread said that he took his pagh off in celebration of winning first place? It is one thing to take your pagh off if you are feeling uncomfortable...just off to the side...that is perfectly acceptable, but to take it off in celebration of winning? That is absolutely offensive...heavy flow or not bro...i think you may have missed the fact that he took it off "in celebration"...I even admit I have taken my pagh off right after the performance...but in celebration? no.

Regardless, as long as an apology was made...its done...everbody just learn from this and we'll move on...I remember I think at BBC two years ago...some dude from MIT slid his pagh across the stage and he got torn up...he and the team apologized, and I have noticed that the number of these incidents have gone down significantly mainly to discussion on forums...so hopefully this serves as an example of what not to do. You never know who you may be offending...if you feel the need to take your pagh off, do it to the side..put it somewhere with the rest of your team's stuff..but don't feel the need to take it off when the winners are announced...just asking for trouble.

Also..HPD, in the video I have seen, and their performance at AVAP...in my opinion, should be winning every competition that they participate in...their dancers are so graceful, energetic, and just make it look so easy...they have by far the most entertaining, traditional set this season.
