I ran my assumptions on the fact that there would just at least 5 judges simply because I don't believe scores from 3 judges can properly gauge a teams performance. Although, with 3 judges one score can alter the outcome, I still don't think it would do that much damage in this particular case. I'm simply basing the numbers on the general reaction to the placings since I have not seen the videos yet. Let's try this again.

ex.

MVP VDUB
Judge 1 (Massi/Mami) 98 69
Judge 2 64 90
Judge 3 68 85

Average: 76.6 81.3

Teams lose from as little as .5 of a point. If all the other teams did as well as everyone is stating then the scores should have been fairly close (within a the most 2 point difference). Although, the numbers do show that the numbers have been altered, they have only been altered by 2.2 points which is this case does not satisfy the claims. Again, the numbers are guesstimate off the general reaction. I feel that my numbers have been low balled on VDUB behalf, since everyone is saying how incredibly they did. The team that is placing first (from my experience) generally gets at least a 90 average and if I were to change the 85 from Judge 3 to a 90 the average score would increase to 83, thus creating a larger gap between them and MVP.
There is no real way we can know what happened until we get the actual scores, which we may not. What has happened in the past is this though: one judge is related to a team and convinces the other judges (or enough of them) to nudge their scores up (and/or others down). It can certainly get a team to place or even win. So if we slightly change some numbers...

MVP VDUB
Judge 1 (Massi/Mami) 98 69
Judge 2 71 88
Judge 3 74 84

Average: 81 80.3

This is very hypothetical, but simply based on past experiences in comps. It's pretty easy to tally up all the scores and then alter scores at the end to ensure a certain victor (or loser). This happens sometimes when a team went early and was given slightly lower scores simply having gone early and the judges not knowing where to set a standard. But this is all coming from an outsider who was not in attendance and has no particular affiliation towards anyone.

edit: oh shit, ameetperson, if you made those scores up, then ignore question 1 and proceed to 2 if youre good at le maths
Yes, she simply made those up to prove a point.

I'm not sure what constitutes 'gray area' for you, so here goes.. I don't think anyone in their right mind would have three judges and then knock off the highest and lowest scores. But if we assume this is true, then there would still have to be some sort of collusion between the judges. Suppose the other two judges agree on a score. Then regardless of what she gives, she cannot determine the outcome, because her score will be thrown out. Similarly, if the other two judges give very similar scores, i.e. within 1-3 points of each other, the best the third judge can do is give a score to throw out the highest score. So, if Judges A and B give 90 and 93, the third judge can give any number below 90, for the final score to be 90, which is still pretty high. Only if there is a good range between the two other judges, and she would have to know this before making her own score, can she try to actually alter the placings. So she basically needs someone to also score fairly low to knock out a high score OR also score high (for MVP, say) and she scores high to knock out the low score. I think that answers the question..

yeah we might have been messy but at the end of the day we didnt know any judges and SGrewal you have no right to say each comp that a certain doesnt place at is rigged, you said the same thing about nachda being rigged when it wasnt... your the same person that said my dhol was off and when i texted you asking how it was off you said it wasnt loud enough, and i had a few transition problems ummmm my dhol was pretty damn loud and my transitions were decent not the craziest like nana or sukhi or slammer or raju or sheru but they were decent enough for live .. and i would love to make you my Ustadd on dhol since you know so much about how a dholi can be off

i dont know why you have so much hate towards mvp but this whole post all i see is rigged this and that mvp cant dance or some s*it we as a team worked hard for 4 months getting this set together yeah we might have been messy and our singer missed 3 mins of boliyan but judges saw something in our routine which they didnt see in others but you should find out who the judges were and call them up and talk to them your self we had no affliation with the judges or anything like that i can post up our full roster as well :)

Since you know so much about bhangra Start Judging and every comp your boy toys team doesnt place is rigged start throwing comps so theres no rigged comps no more this way your happy and we all can stop reading your FCKIN BULL SHIT ON HERE :)

its people like you that just come on btf and talk shits but doesnt have any proper knowledge of bhangra

leave the judging to the judges instead of hating on a comp or team congratulate a team for their hard work and effort for keeping their virsa alive

bhangra shouldnt be drama it should be love but now a days people just love the drama

ill post a full review on giant later today

I just had a question about these "rigging" allegations. Let's say that MVP does have some kind of connection with one of the judges - how does one judge outweigh the entire panel?

Also, shouldn't the highest and lowest score be discarded? How would her score affect the results then?
This is directly from the registration packet

The judges’ scores will be averaged, and the teams with the best
averaged scores will be declared awarded first, second and third places. In the
event of tied scores, judges' overall rankings, will also be taken into
consideration
That answers the second part of my second, but not the first. Even with an average one judge's score cannot affect the score of a team that greatly. If MVP's performance was "no where near" first place material then the massi/mami/chachi/sister/mom's score would not affect the overall score of the team.

ex.
MVP VDUB

Judge 1 (massi) 98 69
Judge 2 64 90
Judge 3 72 85
Judge 4 70 91
Judge 5 68 93

Average 74.4 85.6

Note: The numbers for MVP are based off the fact that their performance was apparently "no where near" first place. The numbers above from Judge 2 - 5 would dictate that they would, most likely, not place. One person on the thread believes that VDUB should have gotten first, so their scores should have been in the high 80's - 90's range (accounting that if the competition was rigged - the massi/mami/whatever would have given all the teams a lower score).

Regardless, if the massi/mami skewed her scores to better accommodate MVP - they still would have not placed (as you can see above). Yes, what I have above is purely a guesstimate, but it still somewhat proves the claims to be false. At the end of the day, the scoresheets are the only things that hold any kind of truth and will settle this whole debacle.
If you watch the beginning of the show here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/14710772 the host only names 3 judges so I don't think there's 5 judges.

Because I chose not to read any of your essays... Ameetkhabra please tell me in 30 words or less (preferably) how you confidently got scores by 5 judges ... and how you narrowed it down to scores by 3 judges... confidently...

Also to everyone, (if you suck at math dont answer this please) if you have 3 judges who know that the higest and lowest score will be deducted (if that really was the case) then wouldnt a "rigged" judge, ie. judge massi ji, just give MVP an average score, leaving the other two judges scores to be knocked off, thus having them win? Yeah i know there are some grey areas to be considered in that question... but answer it as if there weren't.

Pleej n thank ju.
Question 1. I don't think confidently is the word you were looking for, nor would I classify what I wrote an "essay."Question 2. Your question isn't a plausible situation. No competition in their right mind would drop the highest and lowest score from three (3) judges. You, actually, were the one who stated that in the registration packet it stated that the average of the judges would be taken, so you've basically nullified your question.

I see what you have done footballforlife - the question that arises is that, why would the other judges want to lose credibility by allowing the Massi/Mami to persuade them to skew their scores. Also, shouldn't a committee member be with the judges as they are discussing scores/performances to ensure that "rigging" does not occur? Shouldn't the "rigging" allegations be towards the Giant committee rather than MVP themselves? Back to the numbers, it was stated in the thread that VDUB should have gotten first, so by lowering their numbers (compared to mine) it puts them in a position for 2nd or 3rd rather than 1st - which kind of discredits my initial numbers. I would say the same about my MVP numbers, but that falls in line about what you were saying with the judges trying to persuade each other. If there was any persuading happening shouldn't your VDUB be reflective of that?

To your first question--no clue. To the second, I would think so. I'm not claiming to have any special inside knowledge of this comp (or any other, recently), but simply saying what could have transpired given the questions regarding the results of the comp. I think the VDW numbers are reflective of that. I claim that a collusion of judges could get a team to specifically win, by also lowering the score of other (high-scoring) teams. So I slightly lowered the score for VDW so that it would be easier to get another team to the top.

I sense hostility?
In that text, you asked me "so how was i off" and i said i couldnt hear your dhol, you said the sound sucked and that no one could use a mic, i said i figured that, you asked if it was off because of the sound, which i said yes to and said it sounded like the transitions were off, you said ajit told you you did great, and i said KEEP IN MIND im just watching from a live feed not the actual show. I would think that if someone like Ajit told you that you did great, you would be reminiscing about that rather than taking my one comment that was based off of a live feed on the internet so seriously. I didn't know the conversation we had was you gathering some evidence for a nasty comment. I hope you feel great about everything you wrote. Never did i say the words MVP SUCKS. I said the girls danced better than the guys. I have never once said I know more about bhangra than anyone else, or that I should judge. I'm not sure who my "boys" youre referring to are, but I'm assuming you must mean Davis since thats who I thought had a flawless performance. And if you want to go into details about California comps being rigged and so on, go to the proper thread, which I'll happily link you to here:
http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/bhangra-politics-in-california/80/
If I dont have proper knowledge of bhangra then please teach me what you think I need to know in an non bias way. Also I wasnt the only person to say this competition is or isnt rigged so I would appreciate it if you didn't try to use this particular situation as a chance to bash me as if I'm the only one who disagreed with something you think. If you have some kind of personal issue with me, then please speak to me personally and I'm sure we can sort it out, otherwise stick to the topic at hand and keep all nasty/irrelevant/off topic comments to yourself.
I didn't ask you any questions in this post so if you want to talk about this further then feel free to call/text/pm/fb whatever so that we can keep from this thread being about your personal issue. Unless, you find it extremely necessary to respond here as a need to prove something or another. But, before you get too far ahead of yourself, if I'm right and this is about me saying something you didn't like about your playing or performance (YOURS) then I do apologize for it seeming that way. I never meant anything in a personal way, I'm not sure how it came off to you in that way, but my bad if it did.

Oh okay, well that makes sense. I just wonder about why a Judge or Judges would go through that much trouble. If I were to point my finger at anyone, in terms of who actually can be accused of rigging the competition, I would be pointing at the committee. As an organizer, I do my absolute best to ensure that the placings are intact and hopefully I will be able to continue doing such. I understand why a team would rig a competition, but in this case it just doesn't seem to make sense. What I don't understand is what benefit a competition may get out of rigging a competition and, like I said above, it seems the committee are the ones that the allegations should be thrown to. This is their 5th competition, so they should be well aware that someone will be accused of rigging the competition if the placings do not fall in line with everyone's opinion. Why not secure yourself and make sure you can confidently say that your competition is not rigged by having at least one trustworthy committee member standing with the Judges as they tally the scores and make their decision.

Meh, I guess this shall stay a mystery until the score sheets are released.

Just like to say all you people making up shit and crap you can suck my khunda and that my massi/mammi/dhada/chacha/chachi whatever you guys are assumimg did not judge giant nor any of our teamates relatives didn't, so where ever you get your information or assume things, get it right, if you want to know who my massi is its raminder randhawa and she dosnt know anything about bhangra and hasnt ever judged a show. THe competition wasn't rigged, yea we had mistakes but Its not our fault giant judges picked us, maybe you should see how creditable the giant judges were and who were they before making assumption. BTW we gave up our trophy to vdub casue they deserved it, and they didn't take said to keep it and thats what we did. Can you guys quit it with the making up numbers as score sheets serouisly you guys hav no life. Just to let you know the Giant commitee was very strict and stuck to their rules and one of them were that the performance cannot be longer than 10mins and there were some teams that went over that time limit. Giant is over and move on. There are my 2 cents . Peace.

PS

Just to let you know who the dancers are so you guys can make a family tree since you are so interested in our teamates family it is :

OMG soo much hate!! Calm down people. Giant was last weekend. W.e happened happened. We cant do shit about it now. We wouldnt go for first if our "massi" was really judging the show even if we didn't mess up lmao so just calm down. Breathe in, breathe out and you should be fine. :)

Also, after all this if you still think its MVP's fault then i will have to admit that one of the judges was my massi, the other one was my chachi and i was able to convince my taya ji to judge Giant Bhangra 2011 as well.. Oh and the committee members were my first cousins. :) I hope this answers all your questions. Now lets all say byebye to this post and move on. ;D

+1

lol its just a bhanga comp guys calm down. whats even more surprising is that people who are arguing were not even on a team that was competing, get a fuckin life man haha. theres more important things in life than the placings at a dance competition if someone still comes back and argues that the comp was rigged or whatever is a grade A dumbassss
