I agree, It's showing disrespect to money but then again Gurdas is showing Sartaaj respect by dumping a whole bag of money to Sartaaj. Why not give that money to the unprivileged, instead of making the rich, richer. Mad respect to both though!

It's shagun. The moment is good, the feeling is good, that's when and why Punjabi people throw money so openly- it's a sign of an auspicious time and money is given to keep the good omens alive. In this video, I'm sure people giving shagun aren't doing so with the intent that Sartaj or his band will keep the money. It's being given as dhaan.

Money is an object we choose to assign value to, it's also an object that punjabis assign auspicious tidings to. It's a punjabi thing, just like some people leave money at a temple, it's about blessings and appreciation, and a million other very human emotions. Disrespect money? This is more like saying "money is important, and how i feel right now, money symbolizes the importance of my happiness, and/or the importance of the blessing or auspicious event I seek." My parents who taught me to respect money my whole life (for example, my mom would even get mad if I threw out a penny while I was cleaning), even throw money, so it's a totally dif. issue.

I guess Gurdas Mann felt that strongly about it; I know it's been said he was a big fan of Sartaaj (obviously lol). still think even 1 note would've had the same effect given by Gurdas Mann (even though it was def a cool moment for everyone present for all reasons).

It doesnt have anything to do with disrespecting money. Afterall, its a peice of paper that was assigned some value. Nor does it have to do with where the money ends up. For all I care, sartaaj could go and buy himself a new safari with that money. Its the whole concept of "vaaring" or basically making it rain that I have a problem with. Punjabis are some of the most egotistical people that ive met and the whole concept of vaaring paise is just a way to show off their status. Giving sagan is fine, but throwing that shit up in the air is basically a way of saying "hey look at me, money aint a thang". In a community where status is so important and where classes have such distinct divides, vaaring paise is just another way to reaffirm the fact that you belong to that upper class and that you have status. My dad still throws money at weddings and stuff and I hate it. Its not too difficult to just give that money to the married couple in an envelope or something but its basically a tradition in punjab to vaar paise. If a mama or a phupherd doesnt throw money, then theyre looked down upon because theyre seen as cheap. Its just a tradition that needs changing/

You guys have to look at something like this at a broader context. Throwing of money or nazrana or whatever you call it is a part of the performance. Especially in qawwali/sufi/ghazal mehfils it is accepted and encouraged that members from the audience (usually well known and respected people from society) to throw money in the air and at the performers. It is not meant as disrespect or boastfulness but a part of the experience of a mehfil. Similar traditions in Punjabi concerts like this as well. Its all part of tradition.
