Surprised there has been no thread about the massive need for aid and the amount of destruction in Haiti. Or about the way in which many right wing Hate-mongers are calling for America to not aid Haiti.

Some disturbing images in this link, but it truly shows the challenges Haitians are facing right now.

For anyone who hasn't done so already, please contribute to the aid of the earthquake victims in Haiti. To make an automatic $10 donation to the Red Cross, text "HAITI" to 90999. Text HAITI to 25383 to give $5 to the International Rescue Committee. Thanks.

Please be careful about which agencies you donate do. There will be a large scam that comes out of this, I can assure you, because "relief groups" will take your donations and pocket them. Stick with Red Cross, or established organizations like UNICEF!

i was supposed to go to haiti for a medical mission in march. If i still am permitted to go, this is going to make things alot more interesting...port au prince is in shambles, and we were going to be in small towns outside of it. Cant even imagine...

Like nikhil said, sure the bake sales and fund raising may say Haiti Relief, etc. on it, but if you want to make an honest contribution, go through the red cross. Even the clinton foundation would be a good place to donate.

Oh God please don't believe that man Clinton has done so much harm to Latin America.

Red Cross is good, they do help people, BUT historically, in America (in other countries there are locals that help out through Red Cross funds and they do a great job) the Red Cross has been unhelpful at times, and in full support of the government. i.e. after desegregating schools, the Red Cross was still very racist in their practices. Also, they have been known to deny blood from homosexuals (citing HIV as a reason, even though heterosexuals are just as vulnerable to STDs). But yeah for a long long time, up until the late 60s, they segreated WHITE human blood from BLACK human blood (I know I know, blood is red), denied many blacks money, or the opportunity to help.
But yeah they are actually helping people abroad, it's just good to know the entire history of an organization that has such a wonderful image

HERE IS A LEGIT PLACE TO DONATE TO
I put up a video on my facebook about it but here's a link without the rant

I believe your information on the history of the Red Cross is disingenuous. The official FDA policy states that any man who has had sex with another man since the 70s may not donate blood legally. It's not the Red Cross's official national policy (I think a few years ago they combined with other blood banks to support changing the lifetime deferral to only 1 year, it was all over the major networks....there's also currently another push in the House to force the FDA to review this again). Not to mention that the International Red Cross/Crescent is separate from the American Red Cross, AND not to mention that the local chapters of the Red Cross which you praised, were often the cause of many issues (such as segregation of blood into the 60s, which was basically only in the segregated South).

And how is the Red Cross supposed to be held responsible for separating blood by race when it was again the government that mandated this during WWII (Dr. Charles Drew, a black man was head of RC at the time and resigned over it, what else was he supposed to do?).

Does the Red Cross have serious issues? Yes. Have there been scandals of embezzlement and corporate tactics at national and local levels? Absolutely. But your points are just as disingenuous as their controversial tactics. You claim we're ignorant/need to learn history but if your facts are wrong then the point just gets lost.
------------------------
edit:

Please don't feel scared to donate to the Red Cross, UNAID, etc. There is ALWAYS a chance that your money doesn't directly reach Haiti, but the point is that they've already sent millions of dollars, you're helping these orgs be prepared for the next calamity. There are certainly lots of smaller, more focused groups (like JustAGuy pointed out). So if you're really worried about this particular issue I recommend those types of groups, otherwise the big Orgs are your best chance to make an impact without too much effort

Dude seriously man...every one of your posts "justaguy" is so extreme....and on top of that..you just posted false and completely distorted information regarding an organization that Swi clearly proved you don't know anything about...if you are gonna criticize something at least make sure you have your facts straight.

and im not sure how "clinton's harm to latin america" has anything to do with his foundation helping out in haiti? In case you didn't know, hes the Haiti Envoy for the U.S.

Now explain to me what "harm to latin america" that clinton has committed is going to make his charitable organization to the country to which he is an ambassador unworthy of a donation? lol. or has his organization followed some policies required by the government that are going to be misconstrued into a devious and unethical plot for clinton to establish domination over latin/central america.

And to further support your donation to the Red Cross, medical schools, hospitals, etc. across the nation are using the red cross as their primary source of fund raising. My school has deemed it the primary source for its own collected funds, apart from using donations to send our own med students/residents/attendings over.

Wtffff? What was up with the personal attack? I thought you were mature enough to have debates with people, you've always been intelligent and articulate enough to do that from what I've seen !
I’m assuming you Google’d RED CROSS BLOOD SEGREGATION and found that the third hit is a socialistworker.org article, why would you use it to think I believe SOCIALIST PROPOGANDA lol … Fred Douglas wrote about his experiences as a slave… it was propaganda, didn’t make it untrue or bad. Just because the truth can be used to create awareness doesn’t mean it’s bad, and it doesn’t make you a Russian spy lol I still can’t get over your last sentence!
(http://socialistworker.org/2005-2/562/562_04_RedCross.shtml) … what part of the article is Socialist propaganda, where does it say BE SOCIALIST RED CROSS IS AN EXAMPLE OF CAPITALIST GREED

And when did I mention a thing about ignorance. I said it’s good to know an entity’s history. That’s not a self pump directed at making me happy for being a history major, it’s a statement signifying the importance that understanding history has on accepting images (like the Red Cross image).

I was simply calling out an organization directed to giving aid, allowing its subdivisions to restrict certain people (based on visual characteristics) from giving aid.
AFTER World War 2, Southern Red Cross chapters CONTINUED to practice separation tactics, often leading to denying certain people from attempting to help, again based on visual characteristics (the color black).

About the male on male sex blood law, I wasn’t aware of that, my apologies, I was under the impression that the Red Cross openly denied homosexuals based on orientation, turns out I’m wrong (BUT I didn’t think that because of ‘Socialist Propoganda’ rather because of a protest that occurred at a friend’s university, should’ve looked into it more).

Anyway what was the point of repeating my post of big charities carrying along with them small instances of controversy, alongside insulting me? I never said NOT to donate to the Red Cross, if you can find it in my post please show me !

Sure Ill talk about Clinton quickly...
So sometime in 1991 Aristide was ousted by Bush Sr.. Clinton came back and looked like the hero (like US entering WW2 after supplying Nazi's with their death tools, but still looking good cuz we were 'fighting the bad guys') cuz he brought back Aristide in 94, who was sorta seen as the legitimate, people’s president. Everyone thought Haiti was gonna be in good hands and Aristide would take care of the people n reforms would happen … that didn't happen. Clinton said listen I’m doing you a favor, but now you listen to me, you're my puppet bitch.
Clinton's conditions were simple. Haiti might be self sufficient, but from now on you buy our shit (whenever something threatens the dollar we either stage a coup or force people to buy our shit). So from Florida we started flooding rice into Haiti, along with a whole bunch of other commodities the Haitians themselves previously produced. Haitian production halted and they've been suffering ever since. Anyway, it's very easy to look like the good guy after you put an end to a corrupt illegitimate government, which is what Bill Clinton looked like he did. We did get rid of the FRAPH death squad who sawd off the arms of Haitians who spoke against all the bullshit that was going on at the time, but things didn't get any better for Haitians. When you put back a legitimate ruler into power, you're supposed to let him or her run his or her own show to make actual reforms and to help people out after crisis. Turns out, Clinton forced the new president to follow his own dirty orders. There were a small number of really rich Haitian families that benefited off this (who have good ties to the Clinton family, also School of the Americas, a part of our defense department that is really a program which trains terrorists who in turn help out US puppet governments, School of the Americas has very close family ties to the Clintons), but the poor have gotten poorer. Haiti’s urban workers and farmers are living in hell.
After Clinton ran Haiti even more into poverty, he put an embargo on them (yup, always helps out a poor nation !)
(You can read all about this in the book Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventionjs Since WW2.) ... Also, historyisaweapon.org, click on Chapter 1, then click on People's History of the US by Zinn, and he talks about how Clinton screwed the Americans in chapter 21 or 22 or 23 or something, and how people were fooled into thinking all those jobs n the good economy was because of him loll something I grew up believing...

Anyway in 04 Bush hired our School of the Americas paramilitary buddies to re-oust and destroy and torture any of Aristide supporters, since Aristide demanded reparations after being screwed so hard by Bill Clinton. Keep in mind during this time when Clinton had a chance to do something about the situation, HE DIDN'T. Isn't it wonderful how NOW, after overseeing poor sweat shop workers being beaten by Brazillian troops for demanding more than $4 an hour and doing nothing about it, after ALL of the shit that the poor Haitians have been through, NOW Clinton wants to go in and help out? No. Presidents, former presidents, future presidents, they never actually care about helping out, they take advantage of situations. When Bush made nice speeches post 9/11 about helping those who lost their families during those tragedies, what did he actually do? He let Dick Cheney’s corporation profit off the destruction of innocent Iraqi people. He did nothing for the 9/11 families. Tragedy is a huge fucking excuse to make loads of money, to put the big huge American army boot into other peoples' territories, claiming that we're helping out, but actually trying to fullfil our own secretive special interests. Bill Clinton is not going to do SHIT. Get it through your heads. In 04, after Hurricane Jeanne, Clinton didn't do any help (but NOW he wants to, granted that this is much much much much much much much worse, but still, he could've done something if he actually cared about Haitians). He didn’t start a charity, he didn’t give a shit.
In 2009 a few months ago Clinton, the envoy to Haiti, made speeches n talked about how he'll give the Haitians a better life by investing in the area. He didn't make things any better. In October he met with a bunch of rich people, including the asshole IDB president (who together with Clinton screwed Haiti into an incredible amount of debt which they'll never be able to pay back EVER), and nothing was concluded. Clinton said, eh maybe big American investors can help. Uhm... that's not much of a help lol

Huhhhhhhh? If you said that jokingly then ... yeah man it is sad what's going on to them

butttt if you meant that seriously ... human beings are the cause of many of their misfortunes. Natural disasters suck but the fact that they are SO poor they can't be resiliant on a large scale, that's because of human beings.

I definitely deserve this criticism. As your quote shows however, I did edit my post to be more in line with my usual style. I'm not a really sure why I got so personal with the original post....I have some family members who work in the Red Cross here in the US as well as abroad so it's possible I got a bit defensive (and this is also the source of my knowledge of the Red Cross, as well as the NPR info that came out a few years ago when the fda ban on msm blood was being reviewed).

I do apologize, it was certainly uncalled for, and quickly modified. Would have been done even sooner but I was in a class with a no laptop policy so I didn't get a chance. I think the discussion we could have about Aid organizations (using Red Cross as sort of the case study) would be interesting, but ultimately detract from the thread, which is already off topic.

Haiti is a country that just can't seem to catch a break. Please donate however you can, your aid will go somewhere to someone who needs it :)

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this forum is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
