Hi all,
As many of us know, Pakistan has been hurt this past Summer. My friend (residing in Lahore) has joined one of the few relief efforts and has asked me to pass this message along to you all on BTF. I'm sure even the smallest donation will be greatly appreciated.
Please take a look:
"Hi everyone,
Hope you've had an amazing summer. I'm sure you've heard about the floods in Pakistan: about 20% of a country of 180 million is flooded right now. Why should that concern you?
Each of us has an individual responsibility to address a tragedy, any tragedy, that strikes. The UN has called this flood modern history's worst disaster. Secondly, there is much evidence that an enormous long-term tragedy that spans human death, the rise of fundamental Islam and a complete economic slump is well in the making. You might have read the New York Times article, Hard-Line Islam Fills Void in Flooded Pakistan. Lastly, Pakistan has been good to America - it has fought several American wars in Afghanistan and its time to show Pakistan the best of America.
Ethan Casey says, "I see troubling contrasts between the outpouring of generosity and attention that followed the earthquake in Haiti and the averting of eyes from the flooding in Pakistan". One reason may definitely be the lack of press coverage around this flood. But there are others: Haiti is nearby; the earthquake killed 200,000 or more people all at once. And of course, Haiti is not a Muslim country. "Haiti was all about poverty and tragedy". Pakistan is much more political but is that really reason enough to shy away from helping? It is a fact that terrorism breeds best in poverty.
I have been fundraising with friends - we're at $14,931 - but we have been confined to raising money from Muslims. Let's try to change that. Let's all try to help. I will be traveling to Pakistan in 4 days and will be making emergency relief packs for affected families that will be sent from Lahore to either the frontier or Southern Punjab. This money can make family packs for about 600 families. That's 0.036% of the affected.
