Here's a thought. If you don't like a performance than don't watch it. It's really JUST THAT SIMPLE (who would've thought).

The majority of the people in the audience don't go from bhangra show to bhangra show and watch 100 bhangra vids a day. So something like doing lights and painted letters on saaps, though played out to us, can and still will entertain a crowd.

I'm done.

And finally..the thing most plaguing the bhangra circuit- dancing too fast. If you can't complete a move, slow down. There is beauty in grace, not going buck.

Usually an audience knows what type of routines to expect at certain competitions. If they don't like modern styles, gimmicks, etc then they can opt to not attend modern comps, same with traditional/live. It's even easier if you're on youtube. Look up the teams you enjoy most. If you're not happy with something a team is doing, click the x and search for what you want.

My point is, there's no use in calling teams out. Everyone has the freedom to do whatever they want, including reusing gimmicks or effects at their discretion. If a team reuses something the crowd does not like, it takes away from the team's own performance. I'm pretty sure the majority of the audience is happy with what they're doing, b/c if they weren't teams would change it.

it's not about the "balls" to make punjabi mixes, it's about what's entertaining...no one wants to go to a competition and hear a plain mix anymore, so why would you make one? Fine, stay true to yourself and authentic punjabi dance and music...you will handicap your chances of placing for sure...and if placings don't matter to you, then go for it (but i'm pretty sure placings, no matter how much people want to give you the bullshit "i do it for the love of dance" crap, matter to most of us).

yep ive watched maybe a handful of vids online, and all the teams at bruin had what according to mariam is reused material and it was still entertaining as hell to me! joe you hit it on the head man.

honestly i think a "plain" mix sounds alot better than one saturated with random effects and hip hop songs. i can see how the hip hop aspect appeals to desis who grew up in america, i enjoy certain rap music too but i dont really see the need for it to be incorporated into mixes. i don't understand how a well produced mix consisting completely of punjabi songs and punjabi instrumentals would handicap you in a competition. does going live handicap you in a competition? i think a good live singer can be just as entertaining as a mix. i understand that not everyone in an audience understands punjabi and having americanised songs in your mix will probably get you a reaction from those people; but on the same note the people who do enjoy punjabi music and do understand punjabi will also react to a punjabi mix that has a good song selection, good instrumentals, and good themes.

haha, navkaran is right...we should now expect TAG not to commit ANY of the SINS you alluded to, right?

and hardeep...

hip hop appeals to people who did not grow up in america too, my mom loves hip hop beats (50 cent, jay-z, she loves those beats)

The need for it to be incorporated exists because the audience demands it...

you don't understand how it would handicap? Go to bruin, boston, elite 8, vibc, fusion, masti---do a plain mix in a "music" category, and trust me, you will be handicapped...

a good live singer will be great at a live competition or a folk one, but other than that, they aren't going to beat a well mixed hip hop mixed team's songs...

how many live teams have placed at non-traditional competitions? TBT at boston? who else (this is not a rhetorical question)

lol guys wait a minute wait a minute. Before this takes a nasty turn. Mariam, depite being blunt with it, was not trying to point out anything other than the fact that people can STILL BE ENTERTAINING WHILE BEING INNOVATIVE!!!! Of course these things still entertain, etc, but why keep doing the same old? The teams we remember, the teams we respect, the teams we love, are those that PUSH THE ENVELOPE! So however she may have chose to word it, thats the message i took. That lets not all be the exact same group of dancers. Respect to the teams that set their own trends/maintain their own style, instead of modifying to new trends etc.

Faizan said it right, these things are super played out and DO NOT DIFFERENTIATE you anymore in a competition setting unless you do them in a fresh way!!! It doesnt seperate you from the rest if everyone is doing it... Guys if you want to entertain the audience, its great, but its a safe way to try to win or place. And i understand entertainment comes first, trust me, but it doesnt make what she said wrong.

As for mixes, since i care far to much about this, there is far too much overpowering of the bhangra with hip hop, that is my only problem. Instead of using hip hop to ENHANCE a set or AMP up a song, the songs are becoming the core of the entire mix and thus a large portion of the dance. Faizains again right that a pure punjabi mix can tire people out, especially people who dont know bhangra music and punjabi music... so mixing is GREAT, it connects everyone, but at the same time, whats keeping it from being a hip hop competition? As gimmicks adopt more and more hip hop and music adopts more and more hip hop, we're blurring the lines.

and once agian... great dancing >>> number of dancers, complexity of set.

But then wouldn't a good mix of both make everyone happy and satisfy a whole audience, instead of half of one?

If you are hurt and personally upset over this post because you know you are guilty of every item listed, don't be. There is no need to get defensive and/or hippie over it. What's done is done, and much of it has been done well. But my post is a challenge for the future, for every set currently in process for BAB, TDOT, and all upcoming fall comps... for the advancement of bhangra in 2012 hah...

It's pretty much a new season about to start with the TDOT comp and then BAB, idols, burgh, and on. Stick with the same ole if you'd like... or take on the challenge if you're up to it

whats keeping it from being a hip hop competition?

Tons: daangs, pughs, phumaniya, shers, tumbi, dhol, jugni, and a million other things, haha...putting hip hop in your mix, and doing a couple of hip hop steps is not threatening the format of the competition...and the bottom line is, hip hop makes your mix nasty if done right...

HAHA sorry I couldn't help but laugh here. It almost seems like this was directed toward me, but I've done none of these-so either you're horrendously mistaken or it wasn't. Thank you come again.

Honestly to a certain extent I agree with you. I'd like to see teams do new stuff. But creating an entire thread about it just because you're "bored" is unnecessary. There's still people coming to BAB coming up who've never seen LED light tricks. Will this still entertain the physical crowd there, hell yeah!

Relax homie. Let people do what they're doing and let innovation come organically and naturally. Patience is the key.

lol you know what i meant, bro. its just how much is too much... thats all im saying.

Boston Bhangra used to hav ea rule in their mix that no more than 25% could be hiphop. I loved that rule, it forced you to stick within the confines of BHANGRA.

kush, we're not even close to "too much." you got vardis? you got folk elements? you got props? then you're good...once you TAKE OUT essential elements of bhangra in a large scale (ex: no pughs, or, no daangs, or no jhummar), that's when i'll care...adding non-bhangra elements to a folk set is my idea of poetry in motion...being able to take a folk dance, stay true to it, and add as much craziness as you want, is my idea of creativity and of representing WHO WE ARE as desis in america...
