If you're looking to join a team (and I would definitely recommend it before thinking about starting your own), check out Shaan Mutiyaaran Di (SMD). I believe SMD has a few girls from NJ as well and they're definitely a promising all-girl team. I'm sure they'll be one of the top all-girl teams soon and you can learn a lot about folk bhangra from them. (Hit up dheerja or sulmoney for more information)

The reason I suggest you join a pre-existing team as well is because half the battle is knowledge - where to get vardiyaan from, how to get mixes made, how to apply to competitions, learning the basics of folk..etc the list goes on. Having a well-established team nearby is a blessing (I wish I had that) and I'm sure if you manage your time correctly, you can do both.
