I am just curious about how does Bhangra Community refers to itself when asked about their nationality/race/ethnicity. I just want to see how diverse this community is. So please VOTE if you choose "Other" option feel free to explain your choice by replying to this post.

Thanks

depends on context right?...if some random white person asks, people might be more liable to answer indian or paki (or desi).
If a brown person asks, you may go by state (i.e. punjabi, gujarati, etc)
If you're abroad, then you might say American/Canadian/UK

identity for most people is circumstantial not inherent (I don't mean to evolve this thread into some philosophical argument)

if you're looking for actual diversity stats (i.e. how many people on this site are actually punjabi), then you should rethink the poll or clarify that in th epost

No my purpose is not to find how many people on this forum are punjabi. My purpose is to find how diverse this forum is and how does people normally reply to the question i asked. I like your arguments though. I do not mind evolving this thread into a philosophical argument related to the poll.

You might also want to take out "sikh" as that's a religion while all the others on the list are nationalities.
Nice catch but it's there for a purpose bro...Lots of people i know think that Punjabi and Sikh are the same thing i want to give them 2 choices and see what they pick. I already have people voting for it so i think i would like to keep it there. :)

Looking at the replies and all the edits i already made to the poll i would like to state that if your particular ethnictiy/nationality/race/religion/caste/clan/last name is not listed please choose "Other" and feel free to explain your choice in the discussion.

Thank You for understanding!

Can we get Shah up there? LOL Just kidding. I'm kinda missing the point of this thread/poll.

Asking whether people identify themselves as Indian vs. American vs. Desi is a very intriguing question. However, what this poll NOW has become is "Where in India are you from?" And having Sikh up there is a bit misleading - Sikh is NOT an ethnicity, it's a religion. You're asking three different questions (ethnicity, religion and nationality)...

For example, someone could be a Punjabi Sikh American. (Speaks Punjabi, Follows Sikhism and is an American citizen). Could refer to all three equally as well.

That's why I asked earlier what the purpose of this poll was. I think his goal though is to see what a Punjabi Sikh America on this forum would primarily identifies themself as.

so it's not so much a census as an identity question. Still goes back to my question on context: I consciously identify myself as American first (since I'm born and brought up here), but since I so rarely am in a context to actually acknowledge that (except when in india, or traveling), my gut response is to say Indian since that's the most common/broad identifier.

Your point about context being a factor is completely right. It definitely does depend on context.

If it is to be an identity question, the only two choices should be (and feel free to disagree) - Indian or American/Canadian. If you identify yourself as Punjabi, then you've misunderstood the question and probably need to choose Indian.

If he wants to see what an Punjabi Sikh American identifies himself as, then the question should be: What do you value MORE - your culture/language (ethnicity), your country of residence (nationality) or your relgiion (religion). Anything else would be misleading and would probably result in erroneous data.
