why do people think that "traditional punjabi culture" is something that is backward and can only be done a certain way?

I'd say almost everyone on this thread, ashveer included, is being sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek when referring to 'traditional punjabi culture' or the protection of it.

In the thread I posted earlier, some people were REAL uppity about girls dressing as guys, but we haven' seen that here.

I was being sarcastic but only partially so. I mean to reflect more critically on the ways in which certain notions of traditionality, culture, and tradition get taken for granted in the bhangra community, and then reinforced when they are arbitrary and ahistorical.

On a side note to Tucker, Punjabi 'culture' is both backwards and forwards. It depends against which other 'culture' you measure it up against. Take a moment to think why when you go to Punjab, most jobs in the public sphere that are considered feminine to us are taken up by men...why you don't see women out as much as you would here...its because they're at home, where they belong.
