What a debate!

I feel the idea of Khalistan is great, the idea of a utopian land where Sikhs and other religions can practise in peace sounds fantastic, and i for one love that idea. However, i do agree with a majority of ppl who have written replies on this post, that if we dont sort ourselves out first ie. caste, province etc, Khalistan will die a slow and shameful death. Who will govern it? Finance? Laws? Transport? When we were offered it back in the late 40s that would have been the time to take it, but not now.

However ppl! I feel all this anti-Khalistan is also anti-Sant Jarnail Singh, is it not? I dont think it is, for atleast i hope it isnt. We as the generation born close to the time of 1984 need to embrace what he did. Was he a terrorist? Should he have taken arms into the Akaal Takht? The debate continues...
But for all of his downfalls, he did not do any of this for himself, it was for us, the children of Punjab.

Khalistan is not going to happen, now stop arguing about it.

Jsandhu, you are a bigot, and are all that is wrong with Sikh Punjabis today. A total ignorant hatred for non-Sikh Punjabis. I detest you.

ok you need to calm down bro. I'm jatt too, but theres no such thing as the "best caste". and you say "hindus and shit", no religion should be referred to as "shit". Damn you are a total jackass now that I come to think of it

Love it.

People: jsandhu's going to say whatever he wants. You know what? It's his right to believe (however much we disagree) with his statement. But just to let you know, no person is going through this life holding on to the same beliefs, without realizing that stances will leave you nothing short of ignorant to what else there may be.

jsandhu, post all you want, and people, if you want to keep fueling a one-dimensional reply, keep doing what you're doing. I think though we should get back to discussion and develop something substantial from an initial substance-less topic starter.

Is the modern day state of Indian Punjab not a proxy for a Khalistan? It is ruled by Sikh Leaders, has massive political influence by the SGPC, has one of the best economies in all of South Asia, and still has a relatively diverse populace (as the Anandpur Sahib Resolution said Khalistan would be, a country for all, not just Sikhs).

I mean, its not really going to get any better than that. If anyone thinks secession from the Union will solve the problems of farmers' suicide, drug trafficking, political corruption, and religious fanaticism, then they have been playing too many RPGs, cuz that shit is straight FANTASY.

On a side note: I love how all us N. American citizens/residents/immigrants are arguing over this shit, something that is completely out of our hands. I wish for a day where South Asians can be a strong, organized minority in this country. Learn a lesson from the Chinese or the Jews.

Varun is absolutely right in that a separate Khalistan will not solve many of the lethal problems affecting Punjab today. However, it's a way for some Punjabis to externalize the problems they're going through and focus on an outside, tangible 'evil': the Indian government. I dont doubt that Sikhs have been mistreated in India, but Varun brings up a good point that that Punjab as it is today is almost a proxy for Khalistan since it was split in the '60s into Punjab, Haryana, and HP.

I am wary of any theocratic country; no matter how loving and compassionate the text is, you'll find followers who will take hardline interpretations that favor the religious majority at the expense of the minorities. Would non-Sikh businesses be marginalized? Certainly you couldn't run for office (or have a shot at winning).

The organization needed to rule a fledgling country is unbelievable, especially when bordered by two rival nuclear powers. I would expect that the instability in the newly-formed Khalistan would lead India to push for its re-acceptance into the nation, and Pakistan to push for a "re-unification of all of Punjab" aka "give us Khalistan". This might lead to political or military skirmishes, and hello Kashmir 2.0.

Once you answer some of these insurmountable issues, rather than just saying "Khalistan Zindabad"-- then you can go to the Indian Government and demand freedom (good luck with that). With what assistance will Khalistan be recognized as an independent state? I know of no other countries ready to formally acknowledge its existence, no allies. The American colonies had help from the French when we separated. Mexico was only able to become independent from Spain because Spain was under tenuous control by Napoleon (and after an 11 yr war).. There are other examples, but I just dont see how Khalistan would achieve or sustain its independence.

After the demise of khalistan, its citizens would be begging to be part of india again. The idea of khalistan is a fantasy. People who want khalistan need to wake up and smell reality. The REAL sikhs in india, could care less about having their own country. Its the fundamentalist, radical sikhs, with big egos and boasting with pride, who want it, who just end up defaming the religion.

JSandhu,

You clearly have no knowledge about Sikhi, Punjabi culture, Punjabi history, Sikh history.

Go read a couple books, understand the Guru Granth Sahib (if you have ever even read it...which I seriously doubt) then post about being "real" because all you are is a real dummy.

if punjab was blessed with a charles de gaulle or an ataturk kinda dude then maybe khalistan/independent punjab could have been a workable idea in the 40s. heck if jinnah never died after partition and his dream of what pakistan was to be was realized it might have been more advantageous for all of punjab to be a part of pakistan. his plans for pakistan were nothing like what it became, would have been much more like turkey. instead we had master tara singh and a bunch of dudes who the indian/british government bought out (mahrajah patiala and his homies).

here is some things most of us can agree on. khalistan is a stupid idea. punjabi politicians are all criminals (lookin at you badal uncle). the indian government continued the british policy of divide and rule and are not working in the best interests of any people. sikhism does not preach hatred of anyone, even the evil gorey. role playing games like final fantasy are awesome. jsandhu is a misguided young man who needs help. am i right or amirite?

Faizan, while I am not for Khalistan to be made right now your response is faulty. Just because you think something will "never happen" doesn't mean it should not be discussed..although this isn't much of a discussion because the original poster is an idiot.

But what hatred are you seeing for non-Sikh Punjabis? If you check out Amritsar you will see people of all religions, castes given food without any attempt towards conversion or ill will. If you see the Sikh organizations who went to New Orleans after Katrina, the Sikh organizations still in Haiti, the Sikh organizations donating to Chile...do they hate non Punjabis or non Sikhs? What about Miri Piri Academy in India which has white Sikhs taught by Punjabi Sikhs amongst other ethnicities? What about the 3HO Sikhs in New Mexico...they are white, black and everything in between and are not "hated" by Punjabi Sikhs. Come to the Gurudwara I do..you will see Hindus, Muslims, Sindhis..people of all religions and from all over India given the same treatment and love...regardless of if they are Jat, Khatri, whatever.

The people who create the ignorant image you have in your mind is people like the original poster who are typically not even Sikh with the way they live, the knowledge they have about Sikhi and have little to no knowledge about Punjabi culture. Gaurantee I can tell you who this JSandhu guy is- spiked up hair, khanda tat on his arm, big khanda necklace, never read any Bani, thinks being a Jatt is being an alcohol drinking idiot and no sense of what our culture is about.

Your attempt to paint all Sikh Punjabis with one brush is a little ridiculous. Come to the Gurudwara I do and see if non Sikh Punjabis are looked at any differently. Much like JSandhu, you are creating division and hatred between Punjabis.

i am 100% against Khalistan. Gurbani doesnt really say we need a nation. And Gurus only used force and war to defend the rights of others. Here we are just being narcissistic: we need a nation. Bakwaas. What we need to feed out faith. And live good lives. Not in india, not in pakistan, not in khalistan.

Our nation is where we live, not who we are. You wanna be a sikh? prove it with REAL deeds. Do your banis, be a good person. Period. Its ridiculously simple! Having a country is ambitious and i can give u 100 shabads agaisnt this.

do christians have a specific country? buddhists? islam? come on! the beauty of faith is to have it all over, and setting it apart from politics.

yes, 1984 was fucked up. But so has been the holocaust and many other events like in Spain the civil war. They killed all the non-christians...so? its politics and history get over it. it happened, humans are sometimes evil.

khalistan wont bring back the dead, and it will mean anything to me.

im not tryin to be a ass im jus giving me opion,

khalsitan, i know tht ppl think tht it cant be run do to all the corputaion, i agree wit tht also but if we can jus get leader like sant jarnail singh, i think it could work like all the middle east countries, i jus think tht punjabis n sikhs should have there own country because were our own ppl know, we came from the hindus but know we have our own religion n culture, wit our own country i think ppl would become closer to there culture. be honest how many of u even know wut songs r about tht ur dancin to, even though u guys r on bhangra teams n stuff ur still movin away from ur culture and religion, wit our own country we would get more respect from ppl and ppl would actually know who we r, if u were a pagg they wont call u a paki or terroist, n if u have cut hair, they wont call u a hindu,

i also think some of u do agree wit me but r to scared to speak out cause u dont wanna b the bad guy,
i live in a place were there arent a lot of punjabis, n when we c punjabis tht arent real hardcore pendu punjabis, we think tht theyve become to white, ur punjabi stand out n dont become like others jus to fit in

it didn't just happen. People made it happen. Those same people are still not held accountable to this day. You gota be careful to just write it off as history when in fact, you have the widows of those killed in 1984 and the subsequent attacks suffering to this day. The events before and after 84 have completely changed the Sikh mentality and it has completely changed much of Sikhis relations with the Indian government. Humans are sometimes evil, and those evil humans are still hold positions of power in India and are still using that power to decimate populations of people.
