Hello everyone,
First of all we would like to congratulate all the placing teams and every other team that had the courage to step on the stage and showcase the true form of Bhangra to our SOLD OUT audience this past weekend. It was the best one so far for us and I am sure people in attendance will say the same.

I don't think by any means we were perfect so any reviews will be much appreciated so we can improve for next year.

Thanks
MCB Committee

good competition, good bhangra, live teams were great to watch. i wish the music teams had brought it a lil harder, having live teams bring such boss sets definitely was a huge contrast to the level of music sets. in the future try not to change the show order last minute, definitely causes problems.

mixer: tikkiyan were sub standard, sholiyan di sabji isn't the best pre-comp snack. the daal barely had any daal in it, very disappointing, it was more of a guttay/tamatar tari than a daal. shahi paneer had the right color going but the wrong flavor, fell flat in terms of heartiness, paneer even tasted fikka. the gulab jamun felt a bit stale, definitely not freshly made. i recommend that if you're going to have gulab jamun please make sure they haven't been refrigerated for long periods of time. the pink barfi in the sweets boxes tasted pretty good, not the best but not bad either.

afterparty: to the dumbass punjabi kid who almost got wrecked in the hotel lobby, you're a complete phudh. if you decide that it's a good idea to get drunk and walk around the hotel where teams stay with your clueless looking girlfriend following you around looking like she completely regrets ever being with a phudu like you, don't start shit with bhangra people you don't know. i understand that you're an uneducated douchebag that lacks any sort of interesting personality traits and has a massive inferiority complex but starting shit randomly with people you shouldn't fuck with is the worst way possible to try to validate your inferior manhood. You are lucky a team member of the guy you tried to start shit with took enough pity on you to shove you out of the way and keep you from getting your face broken, because that's exactly what the outcome would have been. As I watched this situation unfold, I was hoping that you would have had enough baisti, that the employee freaking out and threatening to call the cops might be enough to make you think straight. But no, you decided to walk over to where I was sitting and when I told you to chill the fuck out in a calm and friendly manner, you responded with what has to be the most retarded response I could have imagined:
“tusi toronto wali kaun ah, asi dekh lau thuanu, saday pind ah ke kaun khang lau??? asi detroit walay ah”
punjabi dudes who attend bhangra competitions, don't be like this phudu.

lol@ dj's using fog machine and setting off the fire alarm

What does that even mean lol ???
example: let's say some phudus go to a pind other than their own and start maaring barkaa/lalkaray/khang, it can be seen by phudus residing in said pind as being a challenge. the residing phudus might then confront (dekh lau) the intruding phudus. a tussle might ensue which highlights the phudu-puna of both the residing phudus and the intruding phudus. meanwhile girlfriends of all phudus involved prob banging white dudes on the side.

I heard that RVD was only given 3 or so minutes for the judges meeting after the competition while other teams received 15+ minutes, was there a reason why? If I remember correctly, which I should since I was there last year as well, you only gave us about 8-10 minutes with the judges last year and gave the other teams far more time, but even so we had to argue with you for those minutes. I see a trend going on.

Also, I've been dying to know what the equation formula is between Gary's and Jagga's relationship! Please tell me

So this was our 2nd time here and a lot of things were different and a lot were the same.

PreComp:
+ We all were accepted back in December which I appreciate because it gave us a lot of time to prepare and buy flights and stuff ahead of time.
+ There was a deadlines doc that was sent out which clearly stated what need to be turned in and when
+ There was a whatsapp group between all the captains where we all talked about all sorts of things
- That whatsapp group caused a lot miscommunication between the teams and Gary with the mix timing, at least for our team. The day before the comp we had to extend our mix 30 secs to avoid getting deducted 10 points. (Shout out to Jason Kataria for working with me so last minute!) I read the entire packet and the rubric, it only had the maximum written out, min was not listed. Anyway, it was stressful. So for the future, I would be nice if it was written out in the registration/post registration packet of whats expected for our mixes, attire, props, etc

Hotel:
+ Shuttles 24hr to the airport
- I wish all the teams stayed at one hotel but I guess that would've caused more problems.

Mixer:
+ Formal
- The lineup die roll thing was confusing, should have just picked out of the hat to begin with. Its the most fair way, imo

Practice Space:
+ apparently teams got practice space but we didn't use ours because Howie is the best and got us a room at the university of michigan and we could practice without any time restrictions.
Shout out to our liaisons Meher and Nishu for driving us and back from campus and for being our friends this weekend. You guys were awesome! Only have good things to say about you two.

Tech Time
- Ran really late. Also it was unclear of how much time we had because we only had time for one run through and then we had to go...Im still confused.
- Also, our lighting cues were played incorrectly. Granted, we did just hand it into them right before our tech time but we didn't have another option since we had to redo our final mix the day before the comp. The lighting was supposed to be fixed for the actual performance, but it was not.

Lunch/Dinner
= We got shawarma wraps. There were plenty for everybody.
- We only got two boxes of pizza which was not enough for the entire team.

Line up chaos
- So the lineup was decided at the mixer the night before on friday and after everybodys tech time on saturday, we get a message from Gary asking us to let Shan E Punjab Phulkaris (originally they were supposed to go first) go last because their jackets and kainthay got lost during their flight. I don't understand why all the teams were asked to do this so last minute. If Shan E knew that their stuff was missing, they could have told all of us at the mixer. I don't think anybody would have gave it a 2nd thought if they went last before everybodys lineup was decided. Even after the initial no from the teams to this change, we were continuously asked to think about the girls and even after the judges were not going to dock any points from shan e, the teams were continuously asked to move up in the lineup. Every team offered to lend their kainthay and jackets to them as well but apparently going last was the only solution. Although this didn't cause a lot of stress to our team in particular, but I can imagine what the teams in the beginning half felt like.

Show:
= The show hosts were speaking in punjabi the whole time but I guess it catered to the audience.
= I don't even know if it ran on time because I don't remember there being a schedule.
++ Howie for cheering us on during our performance! Thank You for all your support and hospitality.
+ The charter busses taking to from and to the hotel
- There was NO water at the venue. Usually the teams get water right after they preform.

Judges Meeting
= They didn't really say anything. Hardeep and Neeli were the only ones who spoke and it wasn't much.

After Party
- It was at the hotel ballroom. We bought tickets to the after party but the tickets were never given to us nor did anyone check if we had paid or were on the list...so yeah. Also, it got shut down because the fire alarm went off like three times. Some say someone pulled the alarm, some say it was because of the fog machine, some say the fire alarms were just the part of the music. So the cops came and kicked us out. Lawlz. So maybe have the after party at an actual/appropriate venue next year, like last year.

Overall, there were more good things about this comp than bad. Even though the after party got shut down, the time period it was open for was still a lot of fun. The tech time ran late but we weren't stressed. We were super excited to place against the awesome teams there that night. We low-key love this comp. The live teams were out of this world and SPD straight lit the stage on fire. Congrats to NSG for the first and Gary for another successful show.

*Shoutout to the best Liaison Sukhman for catering to our every need and helping us throughout this whole process*

Hotel – Hotel locations were great for people flying in and separating the teams in 2 hotels was probably a good idea because people get rowdy and at least not everyone in the Hampton lost sleep because of the fire alarms being set off in the middle of the night. The hotels also had complimentary breakfast and shuttles to and from the venue and airport which was great!

Mixer – Definitely liked that it was in the hotel, it allowed us some time to rest before the mixer started. The games were a waste of time because the order of the lineup did not depend on the games, even though that’s what we kept hearing. The dice roll to determine lineup was unclear and confusing because no one truly explained how it would work. I.e. if 2 teams roll the same number they would have to roll again to break the tie. It was also unprofessional on Gary’s part to disregard all the other teams and change the process of determining the lineup midway and start all over because a couple of teams were complaining. Stick to what you started, otherwise it comes off as favoritism. Food was ok and that was the only time during the weekend we were properly fed. (Will get to that in the next section).

Competition Day – Practice times after the mixer ran really late into the night, taking away from a good night’s rest before comp day. Saturday morning we kept getting confusing updates on tech time. Teams got anywhere from 7-20 minutes on stage (from what we heard). RVD turned in everything on time and still only got the minimum time possible. Pick a standard time for all teams to make it fair. Tech time obviously ran late. When we finally got our turn, there was another team’s band on stage figuring out their music….meaning they still got extra time to set up their band after their allotted time on stage had passed. So we had to just walk through our set while they played their instruments. To be fair our actual time on stage did not start until they left but it seemed unfair to allow certain teams go over their time and not others.

Lunch was not appetizing at all and we did not get enough so we had to go out and buy more food. As we were about to go to the venue for the show we were told that the lineup has changed because a team did not have their full set of vardiyaan and they were waiting for someone to bring them. Which is understandable but I’m still confused why all the teams were bumped up 2 spots instead of just 1 to accommodate for that ONE team.

The show started late and there was NO WATER for the teams at the venue, especially after they got off stage. And again we did not get enough food after the show for our team…so AGAIN we had to go out to purchase food for the entire team. If anything, a competition committee should at least keep teams fed and hydrated, that’s hospitality 101.

We only got 5 minutes for the judges meeting…which consisted of little or no constructive criticism, in fact we were basically told our set was “Too traditional”…what? I thought this was a “Traditional” competition. There was a long line outside the meeting of teams waiting to talk to the judges but Gary ignored the line and let the DCBC captain talk to the judges first, who came in through the back.

After-party – all teams were told they had to buy tickets otherwise they would not get in, however there were no bouncers at the door checking ID’s or tickets, so that makes me wonder if this was just a money making thing. The after party lasted for maybe 15-20 minutes before getting shut down. The DJ made constant announcements to tell people to stop pulling the fire alarm…while he had his fog machine on. Maybe getting a proper after party location would have been a safer bet.

Overall – The drive up and back from the competition was more fun than the actual competition itself, which was confusing, stressful, and partly biased. The teams that placed did deserve to win but getting told that our team was too traditional for a self-proclaimed traditional competition with no real constructive criticism was, for the lack of a better word, bs.

^^^ Couldn't agree more with Muskan. For a competition that flaunts that it's "traditional" "No gimmicks" "Folk" I honestly can't believe they said we were too traditional.

From what I was told the Judges had NOTHING bad to say about us.

Our liaison Sukhman did everything in her power to help us out whenever we needed to be helped!

Congrats to the placing teams. I didn't see Alamo's performance but NSG definitely deserved it!

And SPD set a new level for live in this circuit.

Mixer games do not necessarily have to do with the line up according to me. The whole point of combining teams and playing games is not have a stressful evening and just enjoy the time before it gets stressful. If we make the games deciding line up then it just adds to the stress level and team are more into it for their place in the line up so the whole point of mixing teams up into a group will get lost. We come to the competition not just to compete but also to make friends and appreciate the love and passion that every individual in that room has towards Bhangra. We do not want it make it all about competitiveness. As far as the dice game was concerned. That is an error on my part and I apologize for that. We should have thought that game through because teams would have kept on getting ties and would have had to roll again and again due to the limited number of combinations those dices provide which is why we picked it out of a hat instead and we will stick to that moving forward. I do not think where you go in the line up matters. Your dance should speak for itself not when you showcased that dance.

Please do not respond for other teams if you do not know what and when they turned the documents in. RVD turned in their intro video late which is why they did not get the additional 5 minutes and had to get the 2 mins deduction because they missed the deadline. According to the file I sent each music team will get 10 mins and each live team will get 15 mins and it was clearly stated that the only way you will get 5 additional minutes is if you meet all the deadlines ON TIME. Live teams got 20 mins because they met all the deadlines which meant additional 5 mins to their 15 mins. Some music teams got 8 mins because they missed a deadline which cost them the additional 5 mins and also got a 2 min deduction because every missed deadline meant 2 mins deduction from tech time. Which was ALSO clearly stated in the word document that was sent 2 months in advance.

We were told by most teams that lunch was good. I apologize as we tried to showcase motor city through lunch by ordering shawarmas because they are hometown favourites with a lot of Arabic community involved rather than what most competitions order which is subway. We will make sure we keep each team in mind and their food preferences moving forward or just stick with Subway. Again as a committee we know we are not perfect so will definitely look to improve this in the future.

We brought over 30 cases of water for the teams that was kept in the kitchen for space issues. that is over 1200 bottles for 180 people. within an hour of the show all the water was gone. People take a sip and throw the water away and pick up a new one. and after the show it was 3 pizzas per team. I even offered the captains pizza while they were waiting for judges meeting so they can have something to eat. It was 3 pizzas per team according to what we ordered. 2 pizzas per team is a standard at most competitions throughout the nation. We know we can better organize this moving forward and will definitely come up with a better planning. So appreciate the suggestion.

I know some teams are saying how they got less time than others but nobody in that room was timing the meeting time besides me. I had a stop watch which I turned on when the team started talking to the judges. The only team that got extra time was NJ and that was also after I gave several warnings to them and the judges to close it out. As far as letting DCBC in ahead of everyone. It was not because they are any favorite than any other team that was waiting but because DCBC was waiting for the same amount of time or even longer but just in the wrong spot. They did not wanted to disturb the judges meeting and walk in the middle to go to the other side while a team is in there. So they just waited on the side. As far as the judges comments are concerned I cannot say much about that as that is their personal opinion. I will email you their notes and score sheets.

It was not a money making thing. The reason there was no one checking for the tickets was because teams paid for everyone on the roster. If there were teams that did not pay or paid for only half of them then we were thinking about giving the people who paid for after party a different color wristband than the one who already paid. But since all the people on the roster already paid we did not think there was a need for us to be handing out anything diff. than just the wristbands they already have.
The fire alarm was pulled 5 times and it was not caused by the fog machine. The hotel had a system to detect how it was turned on and it was turned on because some idiot pulled it 5 times. The party did not lasted 15-20 mins. We started the party at 11:30 and ended at 1:25am. The reason we kept it in the Hotel because years before people said they do not get enough time at after party so we thought by doing this at the hotel this will cut down on the transportation time to any outside venue we picked and teams will have more time enjoying the after party. But teams decided to drink in their rooms for hours before coming down which again is not committee fault. Again there is not something as a committee we could have done to change it because we cannot control someone's personal instincts to go ahead a pull a fire alarm 5 times.

MY RESPONSE IS IN BOLD FONT.

I apologize as an organizer for all the minor shortcomings. Most of these things are minor fixes and we should be able to fix it right away and address it with the committee. DCMPAA have been part of MCB since day one and we really appreciate the loyalty you have shown towards our competition and we assure you as an organization that we will definitely improve these things moving forward. Thanks for all your feedback. We need this in order to improve it.

Thanks

Firstly I would like to congratulate all the placing teams. SPD's routine was very impressive! Well done by our friends on NSG as well, you guys continue to display strong and energetic dancing!

Few months back I had a conversation with Gary(Organizer) regarding MCB happing this year. At the time it seemed the show was not going to happen. I was disappointed as I have always praised MCB for being one of the few comps in the North American Bhangra circuit which cater to traditional teams and provide a fun filled weekend for everyone! I always thought MCB was a great replacement for Bhangra Fusion until this past weekend.

For the first time in 6 years I sent DCMPAA to compete without my presence because I trusted our senior coaching staff and trusted the MCB staff to provide a great eventful weekend for our team. Instead I find out that the comp was run very poorly and there was a lack of transparency. Finding out that show orders were done twice, tech time being cut short due to tardiness on the MCB committee, teams sharing the stage during tech time, and judges not being able to support their decisions and answer questions asked by teams is simply unacceptable.

If there is one thing that every team truly cares about when it comes to a well run and executed competition is finding quality judges to judge their performance. I agree that every judge on the judging panel at MCB 2016 is very knowledgeable about Bhangra, but that in my opinion doesn't make you a good judge. The committee must conduct a meeting with all the judges well before the show to make them aware of what type of competition they are trying to run and what are they trying to promote/achieve. When you promote tradition all over your marketing and then get told in a judges meeting that your team is "too traditional" doesn't make sense. I would advise finding a good mix of judges who are both experienced in understanding the simplicity of bhangra yet appreciate creativity and are good with communicating with teams. I don't disagree with the placing's however the judges job is not just to place teams but to also give feedback and provide reasoning for their decisions. If this wasn't the case, then don't do a judges meeting!

I'm sure Gary and his staff will work together to sure up all the gaps and continue to provide the Bhangra community a competition worth attending and competing at.

Thank you for your response, I understand that running a competition is not a piece of cake and you have been organizing MCB for the past 4 years but this year it seemed to fall short of our expectations and the competitions previous reputation. Which I'm sure was no one's intention, but I wanted to provide honest feedback based on how we saw things in our preservative.

First of all I’d like to congratulate Gary Khera for taking his time out and putting together another successful competition. Motorcity Bhangra is a competition we look forward to every year because of its Folk and Traditional aspects. We’d like to thank Gary for keeping that “Folk” alive in the circuit today.

When we were given a practice spot, we were provided only 20 minutes time. We were on the first floor of the hotel, and one team, I think it was NSG, were given as much time as they wish to use the practice spot. We approached them about this and the response they gave us was that “oh they were the last ones up, so we let them use it to as long as they wish”. I also remember practice spots were given according to line up order.
The respect we have for the judges can’t be expressed in words, for they are educated well and have ten times the experience we do. The judging this year wasn’t done according to the rubric. We felt the FOLK element that Motorcity has every year was lacking. The judges were very stern about the “no gimmicks policy”, during the judges meeting (post-comp) we mentioned a gimmick being used by one of the teams and we were told that wasn’t a gimmick. Energy was 10 points of the rubric, but it weighed heavily in placing’s (from what we got out the judges meeting) . Bhangra Execution (20 points) wasn’t looked upon so heavily, how steps are executed, hands should be etc. Although this was cleared up, plastic saaps, fake daangs without khunde, cones for pointers really eliminate the aspect of bringing back our tradition and folk culture. Authenticity, etc was also something in our opinion, which could have been better looked at according to the judging.

I’m sure Gary will fix these shortcomings, thank you to the MCB committee for a great experience in Michigan.

Thank you for having DCBC!! First of all congratulations to SPD!!! Y'all set the bar high for the whole circuit and it was truly amazing to see you all kill it live. SHOUTOUT TO OUR AWESOME LIASON RAMNIIK!!!! She was there whenever we needed her and was super helpful :)

Here are some of our thoughts on the weekend:
Mixer : It was fine overall though the initial lineup game with the dice just caused stress. Indian food was on point! Also it was great to have breakfast at the hotel!!

Practice post mixer: We were given a spot in the hotel to practice as were other teams so that was super convenient.

Tech time: It ran a little late but was fine.

Lunch: There wasn't enough food for our team but tasted good.

Performance: One of the teams as mentioned already didn't have their vests/taveet and wanted to go last. It was all extremely confusing as to why they didn't bring up this problem the day before so we could have figured out a solution but rather brought it up after tech time. It caused a lot of unnecessary stress on us. Also just moving up one spot would have been easier than moving up two spots.

I know Gary already addressed this but just for clarity, I was waiting outside the hotel in the side entrance prior to the first team being in the meeting so I asked the committee to inform Gary of that and it didn't seem to be a problem with any other captains. NJ, NSG and DCMPAA all had their judges meeting before our(DCBC's) meeting with them.

As for the actual judges, proper feedback wasn't given. Only Neeli and Hardeep offered feedback while the others barely said anything. When asked specific questions about our set , they didn't have a concrete answer to any of the questions either which was really frustrating.

We have no doubt you will fix these issues for the next MCB! Thanks for having us Gary & MCB Committee!

If there is one thing that every team truly cares about when it comes to a well run and executed competition is finding quality judges to judge their performance. I agree that every judge on the judging panel at MCB 2016 is very knowledgeable about Bhangra, but that in my opinion doesn't make you a good judge.

Completely agree with your take on judging, a good judge should be able to give constructive criticism, so the teams at the competition can come out whether they have placed or not, with an idea of what they need to do to get better!

First off, shout out to all the teams who performed. You all ripped it in what was one of the better lineups in memory. Congrats to NSG (I see you Simz and Arun) and Alamo for placing in music, and SPD for putting on the greatest performance I've seen live. You guys held it down.

On to the review... got a lot to say. (I'll try not to mention names, but you all should be able to figure out who I talk about, as he was a huge part of our weekend. Here's a hint, x + Jagga= Pissed off Arjun Chadha) ;)

Pre-Comp
The rubric we received was pretty straightforward, no gimmicks, just straight up dancing. It was what was expected of a traditional comp, and the teams did a great job of basing their performance off of it. We got an email about our liaisons about a week after we were accepted, but when I texted them introducing myself I did not receive a reply. I was told by teammates and several other people that since we were a hometown team, we did not need liaisons. Luckily, Sandeep eventually messaged me clearing up confusion about liaisons, which was not a huge issue to us anyways as we did not have any major requests. The deadlines for turning stuff in were straightforward as well, turn your stuff in on time and get 5 extra minutes of tech time, or lose 2 minutes for every missed deadline. Unfortunately, we turned in our intro video 6 hours late, and lost two minutes of tech time, which meant we only had 8 minutes. While this is a good incentive to push teams to turn things in on time, I personally believe that all teams should be given the same amount of time regardless of whether they are live or music. While it is a competition, it is also a show that people pay to watch. The more tech time you have, the better your performance will be, and better performances lead to better crowd reactions. While we were not fans of the deadline situation, we did not complain as it was one of the rules. Lastly, a lot of the stuff that should have been put on the rubric was put into an unorganized What'sApp chat with all of the captains. Things such as, props, lighting, mix cut offs, were all mentioned in the chat instead of the rubric or by email, and it led to a great amount of confusion for all of the teams. (Especially the music thing, it really ended up screwing teams over as they thought the minimum was 7 minutes, but due to a lack of reiteration, nearly all of the teams did not know the cut off was 7:30.)

Mixer
Before I get to the mixer, props to the committee for the gift baskets and giving wristbands to the team as people arrived at different times. (Hotel was nice by the way, front desk lady was a bitch the night of the comp, but other than that we did not have any issues) As for the mixer, the food was awful. Both the appetizers and the dinner was cold and tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. There was plenty of water though. The games that were scheduled were fun to watch and participate in, but definitely dragged on. Did not see the need for the paag tying game as you guys have done it before, but the limbo, flip cup, and dance offs were nice. (Shout out to NSG for killing the jump rope gimmick) Finally it was time to pick the lineup for the show, and the annual MCB BS began. Captains were asked to roll die and whatever team rolled the highest number got to pick their spot in the lineup. RVD wanted to go 7th in the lineup, and we were fortunate enough to get it after rolling. Unfortunately, teams tied and had tie breakers, which pushed teams from late in the lineup to early in the lineup (Hi MBT). Obviously, the captains complained about it and how it was unfair, which led to the x in the equation I mentioned before starting this review to draw the teams names out of a hat and create the lineup that way. We ended up going from 7th to 2nd in the lineup... needless to say, we were pissed. Stick to one way of picking the lineup instead of screwing teams over like that, x. The captains received their packets and the mixer ended. Practices after the mixer started at 11, and went all the way till 2 AM. While we were able to practice early because of our spot in the lineup, by eliminating some of the games from the mixer practices would have started earlier and teams would have gotten more rest. Each team got about 30 minutes to practice, and the practice space was nice.

Comp Day
Tech Time
More MCB BS. Tech time started about 15 minutes late for us, but for other teams it started a lot later. The night before tech time I sent in an updated mix and lighting requests, which were not even used during tech time. Only half of our lighting requests were used, and the mix was missing a sound effect that we wanted to use. The stage itself was nice, but the wires and speakers on the side were too close to us and it messed with our formations and props. This has been an issue with MCB before, and it needs to be fixed soon (Two years ago one of the dancers on Virsa: Our Tradition stepped on a speaker which led to him dropping his saap). Again we had 8 minutes of tech time, so we did our runthrough and got off stage without being able to fix The issues that eventually happened during our performance as well. After tech time we were taken back to the hotel by a shuttle and received shawarma's, which RVD enjoyed. I messaged the organizer asking about why our new mix and lighting cues were not used, and he apologized and said he would get on it. Sadly, the same issue happened as they were not used during our performance either.

Lineup Issues
Shan E Punjab Phulkari's vardiyan were being shipped to Detroit, but they found out they were going to receive them at 7 PM the day of the comp. They were originally going first in the lineup, but without vardis, there was no way for them to perform. The teams were asked to move a spot up in the lineup to let Shan E go last, and we disagreed instantly. Nothing against those girls, but we had just been moved from 7th to 2nd, and had no interest in moving. We did not want to go first as we would not have been ready since the person who was tying our paags had to tie his kids team’s paags as well, but the organizer said, “He will be able to do it” and “The diff. Between going 2nd and going 1st is basically 10 mins” “U cant even tie a paag in 10 mins” “Put urself in their shoes guys.. its not their fault.” We also did not want to go first for our own reasons, and eventually there was a misunderstanding with MBT going first. The organizer’s reasoning for us to move up a spot in the lineup was the whole “Save the Girl Child”. Shane E’s captain and the never quiet organizer continued talking about how disappointed they were in all of the teams for not being okay with moving up one spot, when it really was not our problem that they didn’t have their vardis. When I explained our reasoning to everyone, the organizer hit us with a nice “Lol” which lead me to ask “What’s so funny?” He then went on a rant about how we should respect bhangra and others, when we were still trying to help Shan E, even though I believed they should have shipped their vardiyan earlier or brought it with them in their suitcases. We eventually did end up going first as we did not want to be the reason a team could not perform, and since there was really no other way not to go first. We went from 7th to 2nd to 1st, and were told that lineup spots would not matter, but I’ll get back to that when I talk about how pathetic the judges meeting was.
The Show
Getting ready was a complete mess as we were in a room with two other teams. Every team needs their own room in my opinion, and there was no water for a long time as well. Getting ready is always hectic, but the lack of space and water we had made it even more difficult. Shan E’s captain spoke to us while getting ready, and we eventually agreed to go first then. The crowd turnout was alright, what I found funny was how the organizers said it was sold out; I could see a lot of empty seats even while I was performing. The show ran smoothly and it was a joy watching all of the teams rip it on stage. As I mentioned before neither our updated mix nor our updated lighting cues were used during our performance. While this wasn’t a huge issue, we were told that they would both be implemented and were disappointed when it was not. The real issues during the show came during the award ceremony. All the teams were standing on stage and watched kids, judges, and liaisons dance, anxiously waiting for placing’s. Finally the time came for placing’s and the crowd was chanting our name, as any other hometown crowd would cheer for their team. If you guys haven’t figured out by now, the “x” in the equation I posted earlier is Gary Khera, who disrespected us on stage two years in a row. For those who went to MCB last year, you may recall who we were teased with both the first and second place trophy. Gary looked at our old captain, Jagga Sohal, and said “Jagga laina?” And asked the crowd if RVD was going to win second or first. We are not a team to bash on another team who places, but when we get teased and the trophy is held right in our faces, and then given to someone else, we will obviously have an issue with it. The audience had an issue with it when Gary did the same thing to Furteelay Shokeen when they performed, and you would think that with four years of experience running a competition he would learn to give the whole “Oh you guys are the home team and they were chanting your name, it was just in the moment” thing a rest. Surely enough, the same thing happened again, as we stood their in front of our families and watched Gary give the trophy to Alamo City after asking the audience if we won it. When he was announcing first place, he looked at us, looked at Jagga, and began speaking to him again. This is where one of our dancers, Arjun Chadha, stepped in and said, “Don’t do that, just announce the placing.” Gary looked at us in confusion, and stopped talking and announced NSG as the winners. While this may not seem like an issue to a lot of you reading, when there is an audience expecting their hometown team to place, regardless of whether or not they deserved it, teasing the team and giving the trophy to someone else is humiliating. For this to happen two years in a row is inexcusable, and is a huge reason why there is a huge question mark on whether we want to come back or not. As we were leaving the venue, Gary pulled up in front of us, rolled down his window, and told Arjun not to talk to him like that and said that he does not know the “equation” between him and Jagga. (If anyone can tell us what that means, it would be appreciated. Seriously, bechara Jagga doesn’t even know what that means.) Several audience members told us what Gary did was wrong and that we should not come back to a comp where we get disrespected each year. On a side note, shout out to all the fans (especially the Furteelay guys) for cheering us on during our performance; it really meant a lot.
Judges Meeting
To conclude the night, we got to meet a panel of judges where we only got feedback from 2/5 of them. We waited in a hall for 20 minutes for our turn with the judges, where FCB, MBT, Soormay, Alamo and us got to talk about our experience. It was here that we found out that MBT was the other team that got deducted two minutes from their tech time, and that teams like FCB and Soormay were shocked we only received 8 minutes, and that some live teams got 30 minutes instead of 20. I was told that some music teams went over their times as well. While we aren’t asking for special treatment as a home team, it was interesting to hear that everyone knew about us and MBT getting 8 minutes of tech time, and other music teams getting more than 10-15. We waited for the teams to conclude their meetings, and eventually we were moved to the lobby as they wanted to prepare for the after party. Clearly rushed, we received 4 minutes to talk to the judges, and did not receive feedback from three of them. Shout out to Neeli for actually sounding like she watched our performance, instead of sitting there and agreeing with the other judges like what the other judges were doing. The first thing we heard was that our dhol was too loud, and when we asked if we were deducted points for that (even though it was not in the rubric a new point was brought up. While Gary spoke of these judges with high esteem, it did not seem like they were very knowledgeable about judging based on the critiques they gave us. After our unproductive 4 minute meeting, we decided to talk to Gary about what he did on stage with us. We simply told him not to tease us anymore. Eventually the conversation ended with us simply saying “you did this last year, the audience did not like it, and it’s insulting to us.” We received a very insulting response. Gary told us, “I’ll do what I want, this is my comp, I’ll say another teams name. I don’t need this bullshit.” He walked off after that, and sat with the judges. (He was with the judges for every team, which was pretty suspicious in my opinion) In all honesty, we weren’t surprised that we were given a response like that. Sorry we couldn’t figure your equation out.
The Afterparty
I didn’t go, but I heard cops came and it got shutdown. Most of us went out to eat and came back and saw a couple making out in the lobby. Kind of gross. Get a room, you paid for it. We were locked out of our room and sat in the hall way waiting for a room key from the bitchy front desk lady. (It was like 3 in the morning) Gary saw us sitting and walked by like he didn’t notice, thanks for the concern man.
To conclude, if you’re a team in Michigan, think twice before applying to MCB. It’s great performing in front of your home crowd, but the BS and different variables involved in Gary’s equation might not be worth it.
Shout out to FCB for offering milkshakes.
If you read all of that, hope you enjoyed. Sorry for any grammar or spelling issues.

Thanks Sunny. I appreciate the kind words. I do not find the need to respond to false accusations or people's assumptions on what I think and what I did. This will give ur post more importance than it needs. I have been in the bhangra circuit long enough to gain the respect I have in people's eyes. It takes a long time to earn that and i will continue to promote what i want to promote which is traditional Bhangra. I know I will have to deal with issues as I may not be able to make everyone happy. But main jaan da te mera rabb jaan da.. naa main aj tak kise team baare maara sochiya te na kadi sochaanga. But if u still think what I did was wrong then I apologize for it. MCB te aayo ja na aayo but u guys are a great group of dancers.Keep dancing and promoting Bhangra.
