so basiqally if one was to get a KAALI talli (best wood u can get for a dhol) from india made by an ustaad, it should cost you around $400-500 canadian (i know this for a fact). getting a padded gig box would cost extra also (depending on what kind of box it is and etc.) plus shipping and or airport fees (oversized baggage and etc.) so maybe in total you can say $500-600. thats approx. what it SHOULD cost you to get a kaali taali from india.
just my 2 rupees :p

Original dhols that are all ropped with no bolts should cost $400-500. I got mine from Ustad Betu for around that price. I dunno when he will be coming down next time to Cali, but when he does I am sure he will bring more dhols. I believe he left 2 that are here still for sale. PM for contact info.

My perspective, The type of wood is very important, but if you dont know how to tune your dhol, dont bother with spending $800 on it. I have 7 dhols, and my favorite one is an amb dhol that cost me $100. My best friend brought it from India for me 5-6 years ago. Put it through crazy abuse over the years, and still slaps, as long as i keep it tuned.

BTW, I think Nana could make almost any dhol sound sick.

i agree with you bro. no point of spending $800 on dhol you wont be able to tune and trust me, tuning roped dhols (roped dhagga and thilli) is a MISSION

wait...what's wrong with dhols from Kala Kendar?? I just finalized an order for one of the dhols on that website...I know sum of the dhols they have sound bad so I picked one that I felt was the best one for the amount I wanted to spend ( since it doesn't look like I'm going to India anytime soon lol ). Is Kala Kendar really THAT bad? if it is, any suggestions on where to get one--or who to contact to hook a brotha up? 8) ( I can't BELIEVE I just said that...damn but you get the point haha )

ustad lal singh bhatti told me the most you should spend on a dhol is 600 and only way your dhol sounds good is if you take care of it and tune it properly.. til this day if you go to ustadd jis house you will see him in the garage working on a dhol and taking proper care of it..

Bro. DholEtc is the way to go. They get their dhols from Nagi, which is one of the most legit music shops in Punjab. They guys at Nagi know about the site and everything so I am assuming its legit. I bought my dhol straight from the store but maybe someone else can share their experience with the site?
