How some of you support any other country outside the US is pretty sad (unless you have some sort of national ties with the country), but that''s football here i guess, be an American but root for Brazil or Spain...
i root for the US first and foremost and will never root for the queen loving brits, nazi germans, facist italians, kamikaze japanese or any arab country other than maybe oman. but since they are knocked out the dutch get all my support since ive rooted for them since the 94 cup.

Because it's Football, not World War 3. Personally, I find Americans cheering for someone besides *gasp* ourselves to be quite endearing.

Next time you go visit a country outside North America, please find me a native that supports another country during the WC...it's odd...Its like you watching Bhangra Empire perform but root for ABC at the same competition....How you support another country is honestly beyond me.... Barack Obama called the US Team to wish them luck, Bill Clinton was present at the games......The Prince and Queen of England were in the locker room of the England team during half time, Nelson Mandela has fully supported Bafana Bafana, the prime minister of France met with Thiery Henry regarding the future of the French National team...It might not be WW3 but there is a certain pride in supporting your country...

Comton, you don't need to explain yourself :)...I was just saying because of the responses around here..

Well of course the Country's leaders are in support of their country's football team haha, some are genuine, some just want their approval ratings to go up- I'm not a president or a queen, I am just a spectator trying to enjoy the sport the way I grew up with it. And growing up, USA had very little to do with this sport... So why not cheer for teams that have shown actual brilliance in this sport over the decades?? I will always show my Bay Area pride and loyalty during NFL season with the 49ers since they created a legacy in American Football and were a significant part of my childhood, regardless of how not-so-great they are now (They will be soon! I can feel it!! :)). But I'm not wishing ill on my country by not cheering for USA in the World Cup: USA + "soccer" does not mean much to me, sorry, and no one is going to die because of it. Heck, most Americans I know don't even care about the World Cup, or know the rules of the game of "soccer"! Why kill my FIFA joy over a team that is playing a sport that majority of their country couldn't give two shi*s about?

And to confirm, it is like watching Bhangra Empire perform and cheering for another team, which I do. Of course I will root on Empire and always wish BE the best, but I can cheer for other teams too. It's all meant to be fun!

We will agree to disagree.

I grew up in Holland, so football is taken a bit more serious from where I'm from especially at the International level. I guess i will never understand rooting for another country.....

P.S. 49ers better win the Division this year because Pete Carrol will build a dynasty up here :p

on a side note, the return of Robben for the Netherlands has been a spark like no other. Should be a great match up with Brazil. So should the Spain - Portugal match tomorrow!

Hahaha, dynasty... I look forward to these games. The Niners will mop the floor with the hawks. Good going with that Taylor Mays situation, Carrol.

agreed :) but to your point, if Football (soccer) was a huge national sport here I would probably have feelings similar to yours... and before you think I am a crazy traitor lol I always root for the US during the olympics... and maybe a third world country here or there that has a special story ;)

Seahawks fan, huh?? mmm hmm lol

As my brother in law pointed out... It's pretty amazing that a country with 1 billion people can't find a dozen mind blowing players to create a dominating football team- I'm sure there's more to it but when you look at numbers alone, (11 out of ONE BILLION) it's kind of funny.

alright sit tight, here comes my novel explaining why i have such a love for the netherlands soccer team. more than 70% of my family is british and soccer is their religion. when my englandy fam bam moved to the states, our pass time when we spent time together was either playing or watching soccer. because of them being brits, their huge influence on me pretty much forced me to root for england and i didn't have knowledge about any american team ... i was about 7 or 8 years old at this time. come the 1994 world cup, i wanted to be "that guy" in the family who rooted against england. i watched the 94 world cup religiously and there was one team that reeled me in ... it was actually Dennis Bergkamp who first caught my eye and since then nothings changed. This was my first real exposure to competitive soccer and it was kind of a love at first sight deal. Even though they were eliminated at that cup, i didn't give up on them and bandwagon a team i thought was "better", instead my interest to find out the teams history and what not grew. It's because of the Netherlands at world up 94 that i feel i am such a soccer hooligan today. since then, i've even been blessed with the opportunity to watch the dutch club AJAX play in the Amsterdam ArenA on both of my trips to europe in 1998 and 2003. so before you go calling me a bandwagoner or a traitor to my country, realize that it's because of them i am where i am now in regards to the world of soccer and i've even travelled to their soil in Holland and watch club legends like AJAX play not once, but twice. Ruud Van Nistelrooy will always be my favorite striker and my love for Arjen Robben continues to grow as he fills his shoes. over the years as i've gotten to learn more about US soccer players, watching them play has been very enjoyable. it's innate behavior to cheer for your own country and and i felt very prideful more than ever before at this world cup ... but in the end its Holland who has me at the edge of my seat acting like a fool :D
