Well as we know Ramadan is approaching very soon, as well as the semester and then bhangra.
Sehri is early, Iftari is going to be late then for some that pray taravee that is late as well, along with the 5 prayers during the day. It is a very busy busy day.

This will be my 1st year which includes bhangra and would like to know:
When/What/How do you practice?
and what about performance at competitions or local events?

If you have pakis on your team, what do they do?

Well, this issue doesn't affect Pakistanis only but all Muslims (who are bhangra dancers).

During Ramadan you can keep your practices in the evening, any time post-maghrib prayers. No one on our team went to taravee regularly (tsk tsk), so we usually had practice right after maghrib, even a team iftari sometime followed by practice.

I would suggest not dancing for competitions or events during Ramadan, sit out and let an alternate take your spot. You need to drink water and shouldn't be to exhausting/dehydrating yourself.

I've done practices during the day i.e., while fasting, and it's pretty rough and you can't give your 100%. If you can avoid it, please do.

If a competition falls during Ramadan, I guess technically you *are* travelling so you can make up that fast another day. All up to you I guess.

That sounds logical to me.

i think the traveling rule wouldnt apply if you are going to go dance...lol

San Jose is having a competition, i think on Sept 20th...and local events

what sucks for me is that I am a co-captain on the co-ed team...anyone experienced this?

I go to the masjid to read taravee...and we are normally done between 1030-1115pm depending on how many is read. have you had problems with the team before? though, i would assume they will understand

Saleem...you are crazy for practicing...health wise

I did a comp during Ramadan. I think it was Bulldog but I'm not sure. It sucked. Practice sucked, rehearsal sucked. You shouldn't do it for health reasons and plus you're not really supposed to be doing those activities anyway while fasting. I say just take the month off from bhangra in general. A lil break never hurt anyone and you;ll be off to a fresh start when you get back.

Happy Fasting,
J

i did tbp while fasting...we used to have full day practices in the heat, it was one of the hardest things i have done physically...but i sucked it up...since ramzaan is early in the season this year, just sit it out dude...30 days in the early season, you won't miss much...but if u want to be an OG like me, then do it.

hakeem olaju...however you spell it used to play nba games while fasting, so i think we can do some phumania...

manhattan bhangra was on eid this year, and that was rough missing eid to go to a competition, i think i never heard the end of going to that "mandatory conference for class" in nyc. but like everyone has said, it is extremely rough to balance fasting/ramadan obligations while bhangra, so the choice is yours mostly, but sit it out if possible, or if you feel you can handle it, then roll with it.

i'm not muslim, i'm sikh and also follow the hindu religion. so i fasted during the nine days of navratri this year, unfortunately it coincided with Vaisakhi. I teach bhangra and also am on a team, so I had to get my students and my team ready for the performances the holiday brings. I upholded my fast and practiced, taught and performed to the fullest. it was actually a great thing for me because i took it as a test of perserverence, i tested my faith, i tested how devoted I am and that felt really good. but soon i was almost out of energy. I would advise that if you can practise, do it but if you feel you can't go on, jus give urself a break, i've been doing this nine day fast twice a year for five years and its pretty tough. i can't imagine what you guys go through for a whole month, but i wish you the best of luck. :)

Wow, great topic Somi I'm glad you brought it up.

Personally I don't know what I'm gonna do... but Billy Bob is right Ramadan is soo early in the season if you decide to sit out awhile you won't miss much. I will probably sit some out and dance some. As a captain I think you should attend as many pracs as you can, just to be there and watch if you don't dance. You'll figure out what works for you and your team :) Rab rakhaaa

I've practiced while fasting many times in the last few years, its pretty rough but not impossible and in the end itll pay off even more. We're fasting for many reasons one being self control, even tho dancing is a bit much buit if u can do that u have ultimate self control. I'm kinda used to it too because of hiugh school basketball having to practice and play through fasting. I competed once during ramadhan but that was on the east coast, and due to traveling i didn't fast but made it up after the holy month was over. if ur gonna practice tho u should be careful not to overexhaust urself, because i have and throwing up doesn't feel too well on an empty stomach.
